I spent eight years winning over Callie, a girl who couldn't even walk. I succeeded.

I actually fell for her, so I chose to stay in this world. I even traded all my system points to heal her legs.

Once she could walk again, she started her own company. In just two years, she became the most successful female entrepreneur in Riverport.

I thought we were heading toward a happily ever after.

But then I overheard her talking to her friends. "Seeing Harrison just reminds me of how pathetic I used to be," she said.

"He took care of me back then, but now? I'm out of his league."

In that moment, she was out of mine, too.

I turned to the system and made a request. "Take back Callie's healthy legs."

1.

"Miss Callie has chartered this entire yacht for her birthday. No outsiders allowed."

The bodyguard blocked my path.

"I'm her boyfriend," I said. "Does that make me an outsider?"

Just then, Callie's assistant, Tiana, walked out and saw me.

"Harrison what are you doing here?"

Her smile was forced and awkward.

Callie had been away on a business trip for a month. She hadn't come home once.

Today was her birthday. I had asked dozens of people to find out where she was, hoping to surprise her.

Now, a bad feeling settled in my gut.

"Am I not allowed to be here?" I asked.

"No it's not that. I'm just surprised."

"Callie is in the middle of a meeting with a client. Why don't I take you to the car to wait?"

"The guard just told me she's having a private birthday party," I countered.

Tiana went pale and couldn't find her words.

I pushed past the guard and walked inside.

She was too terrified to stop me.

Down on the deck, I saw people singing and dancing on a stage.

In the center of a massive pool, Callie was wearing a sexy bikini. She was wrapped around a young man with a perfect six-pack.

I froze. So this was her "business trip."

No wonder Tiana didn't want me coming in.

"Happy thirtieth birthday, Callie!" someone shouted, raising a glass.

"You're a big-shot boss now. Since it's your birthday, what kind of perks did you bring for the girls?"

Callie smirked. "I brought dozens of male models. Take your pick."

The crowd erupted in cheers.

Then, someone asked a risky question. "Callie, I heard you and Harrison are getting close to the big day. Are you going to give us some engagement favors today?"

Callie's expression instantly turned icy.

The room went silent.

The person who asked quickly backtracked. "Callie, I was just joking!"

2.

Callie drained her glass in one go. she leaned her head against the male model next to her.

Its fine. You all know my history with Harrison. He stayed by my side during my darkest years.

Its natural to think wed get married.

But do you want to know why weve been together for ten years and I still haven't mentioned a wedding?

I stared at her cold, distant eyes, waiting for the answer.

Every time I had brought up marriage, she dodged the question. She always changed the subject.

Oh, Callie, we know youre just planning a huge surprise for him, right? someone chirped.

Yeah, is chartering this yacht your way of proposing to him?

Neither, Callie said.

Ill make it clear for everyone today.

She leaned over and kissed the male model on the cheek.

Her slender fingers traced circles on his abs. Her face was a mask of indifference.

Seeing Harrison just reminds me of how pathetic I used to be.

He took care of me back then, but now? Im out of his league.

Thats why I haven't brought up marriage.

She pushed the model away and stood up.

You all understand now? Don't mention his name in front of me again, she snapped.

Everyone nodded frantically, too scared to cross her.

My heart shattered right then and there.

Eight years of companionship and care. I had given up everything to give her healthy legs.

I thought she loved me.

Now I realized I was just a ghost from a past she wanted to bury.

3.

Then lets just break up.

I stepped out from the shadows and spoke.

The entire deck fell into a deathly silence.

Callie didn't even flinch. She just lit a cigarette and spared me a casual glance.

What are you doing here? she asked.

What? Did I ruin your fun?

I couldn't stop looking at the red marks on her neck. I looked at the model standing awkwardly beside her.

The model saw my face and scrambled away.

Harrison, Ill give you one chance. Take that back, and Ill pretend I didn't hear it.

She climbed out of the pool and walked toward me. She reached for my hand.

I stepped back, letting her grasp at thin air.

I said, were done, I repeated.

So you heard what I said? she asked.

She took a drag of her cigarette. She wasn't even angry that I dodged her.

I won't marry you, but Id never truly leave you. Youve been with me for too long.

Her words made me want to gag.

Callie, do you actually think you haven't done anything wrong?

Stop making a scene, she said, her patience thinning.

Is it about money? Ill have Tiana wire you ten million dollars later.

I remembered the Callie from years ago. She was a broken girl in a wheelchair.

Sometimes, she couldn't even control her own bladder.

I was the one who cleaned her. I was the one who held her when she cried in shame.

Back then, she couldn't even look me in the eye.

Thank you, she used to whisper. Ill find a way to repay you someday.

It seemed she had forgotten every promise she ever made.

I don't want your money. Im going home to pack my things.

Its over, Callie. For real.

Ive always been a decisive person.

When Im done, Im done. There is no turning back.

Whatever, she spat.

She turned back to her models. Keep the music going! Whoever makes me the happiest tonight gets to stay with me.

I walked away without looking back.

But at the corner of the deck, I paused for a split second. I wondered if she was just acting out of anger.

Callie, Harrison looks really mad. Should you go after him? someone whispered.

Yeah, what if he actually leaves?

Callie was already dancing with a new guy. Her face was full of disdain.

Im rich now. Hed never actually leave me.

I bet hell be back begging for forgiveness within three days.

4.

Callie didn't know me at all.

When I say something, I mean it.

I went back to our place and packed my bags.

Looking at the home we shared for ten years, my mind drifted.

Love is a long road, and in the end, it relies on having a conscience.

But when someone stops loving you, their conscience disappears first.

I clutched my chest. System? Are you still there?

Ten years ago, I came to this world to win over Callie.

She was a poor, disabled girl back then.

She lived in a leaky wooden shack with no light in her life.

I was the one who pulled her out of there. I showed her the city and the beauty of the world.

She was hard to reach. At first, she wouldn't even speak to me.

It took me eight years to complete the mission. It was the hardest task Id ever had.

But living with her for eight years made me catch feelings.

I begged the system to let me stay.

I used every single point I had earned over the years to buy her a pair of working legs.

I knew she hated being trapped in that wheelchair more than anything.

The day she stood up for the first time, she smiled. She actually hugged me.

She called it a miracle. She said a god must have been watching over her.

She promised she would marry me.

Two years passed. She became a CEO.

She stopped relying on me. she stopped coming home.

When I asked what she was doing, she would snap at me. Im working! Not everyone is as lazy as you!

I believed her.

Until today. Her heart had turned to stone.

The girl who used to smile only for me was dead.

Host, it has been a long time.

The systems voice finally echoed in my head.

At least the system hadn't abandoned me.

I regret it, I whispered. I want to go back to my original world.

You don't have enough points left.

That was right. I had given them all to Callie.

The thought of my sacrifice being thrown back in my face made my heart ache.

The healthy legs I bought for her can I return them for a refund?

Technically, yes. But she hasn't taken care of them.

Shes been swimming in cold water, wearing thin clothes in winter, and letting various men touch them.

The legs are worn out and unpure. Youll only get half the points back.

Letting various men touch them.

The words made my blood run cold.

We were together for ten years, and she betrayed me without a second thought.

I didn't owe her anything anymore.

Do it, I said.

Take back Callies healthy legs.

The door swung open.

Callie stumbled in, smelling of booze, leaning on a young man.

She looked at me with pure annoyance.

I thought we broke up? Why are you still here? Get out!

I watched the mans hand wander over her thigh. It made me sick.

The end of love really is just bitterness and ugly words.

Host, are you sure you want to reclaim the health from her legs?

Im sure, I replied internally.

Reclaiming now. Three. Two. One.

As soon as the system finished, Callie collapsed.

She hit the floor hard.

Her legs began to wither and shrink right before my eyes.

Ah! My legs! Whats happening to my legs?

She screamed in terror. The man she was with panicked and ran out of the room.

5.

My legs! What is going on?

Callie sat on the floor, her face as white as a sheet.

She pounded on her thighs, but she couldn't feel a thing.

She looked up at me, tears streaming down her face.

Harrison! Help me! Look at my legs!

Callie, I said quietly.

Have you ever heard a certain saying?

Those who betray a true heart will be punished. God has decided to take back what was given.

No thats impossible! This isn't scientific!

She tried to crawl, but her lower body was dead weight.

The systems voice spoke again.

Points have been refunded to your account. Its still not enough to go home.

You must complete a new mission. Once you succeed, youll have enough to leave.

Are you willing?

I am, I replied.

I walked out the door without looking back.

Behind me, Callies screams were agonizing.

Don't you dare leave me! Come back!

I knew she was desperate.

But my love for her had died the moment I heard her mock me on that yacht.

6.

I left Riverport and went to Seaport.

I stood on the roof of a skyscraper, following the systems guidance.

My phone rang. It was Callie.

You know what happened to me, don't you? Come back right now!

She was hysterical.

I don't know anything, I lied.

Maybe its just karma.

Maybe she realized being demanding wouldn't work, because her voice softened.

Harrison, you love me more than anything. You can't leave me like this.

Please tell me whats happening. I know you know.

Callie, you said a god helped you walk. If you did something wrong, maybe that god is punishing you. You have to deal with it.

I saw a young man walk out onto the roof. He looked broken. He climbed onto the ledge.

Host, take note. Your new identity has arrived.

When you and he both reach the point of death, your souls will swap.

You will use his identity to finish your mission.

I didn't rush to save the boy. Instead, I spoke into the phone one last time.

Callie, there won't be anyone to take care of you in that wheelchair anymore.

You aren't in that leaky shack anymore. Youre rich and powerful. Im sure a billionaire like you will be fine as a cripple.

I just want you back! Im begging you!

If you come back, God will favor me again! I know it!

She was shaking.

The thing she valued most was her ability to walk.

I had given her two years of freedom, and now she was back in the dark. She was terrified.

I was going to make it worse.

She had betrayed me.

Callie, Im never coming back. Im ending it all now.

Our ten years were just a dream. Goodbye.

Harrison, stop! What are you doing? Come back!

I hung up on her despair.

I ran and jumped off the ledge. The boy jumped right after me.

Help! Someone jumped!

Theres so much blood!

I heard screams as I hit the ground. Everything hurt. My mind was a blur.

That hurt, didn't it, Host? the system whispered. Let this be a lesson. Don't fall in love during the next mission.
