On our wedding anniversary, I went hiking with Garrett Blackwell.
He insisted on bringing a company intern, claiming she could help look after me since I was blind.
I was touched, thinking I was the luckiest woman in the world.
But in the middle of the night, a soft, coquettish moan woke me up.
My vision, which had been lost to temporary blindness, suddenly snapped back into focus.
I was ecstatic and wanted to tell Garrett the good news immediately.
Then I saw them in the next tent, their bodies pressed together in a heated embrace.
The woman was gasping, her voice dripping with fake innocence.
"Mr. Blackwell, is it really okay for us to do this right in front of Vivian? "
Garrett's voice was chillingly cold.
"What are you afraid of? She's just a blind woman. Besides, doesn't that make it more exciting? "
I quietly retreated to my tent and sent a text to my mentor.
"I've thought it over. I'm moving to London next month. "
1.
Garrett stayed in the intern's tent, a girl named Lila Young, for the entire night.
He didn't bother crawling out until the sun began to peek over the horizon.
Seeing me still seemingly asleep, he pulled me into his arms.
The pungent, cheap scent of perfume hit me instantly, making my skin crawl.
I pushed him away instinctively as I opened my eyes.
That was when I saw the dark hickeys scattered across his neck.
It was obvious what kind of intense battle they had engaged in last night.
"What's wrong? Did you sleep okay? "
He looked hesitant when I pushed him back.
Then, he used the same hand that had been all over another woman to brush a stray hair from my forehead.
I sat up, got dressed, and spoke coldly.
"I don't feel well. I want to go home early. "
Garrett's face darkened the moment the words left my mouth.
I knew it wasn't because he was worried about my health.
He just didn't want to leave so soon and lose the chance to seek more thrills with his mistress.
After all, I had overheard them last night planning to keep this going for a few more days.
Despite his annoyance, his voice remained as smooth as honey.
"If you're not feeling well, we should head down the mountain. I can't let my sweet wife get hurt again. "
Underneath that tender tone was a face twisted with secret resentment.
Two months ago, we were in a horrific car accident.
I hadn't thought of my own safety and threw my body in front of his to protect him.
He walked away without a scratch, but the impact caused me to go temporarily blind.
I was terrified, thinking my life was over.
But his devoted care over the last two months had been the only light in my dark world.
If I hadn't seen his true colors today, I might have been fooled by his mask forever.
Before I could say another word, Garrett knelt down to pack the gear.
Lila stepped out of the other tent right then.
She was wearing a piece of provocative lingerie that left little to the imagination.
Inside her tent, I could see a few used wrappers scattered on the floor.
She clenched her fists so hard her knuckles turned white.
She shot me a glare that was a sharp contrast to her usual damsel-in-distress act.
Then, she instantly transformed back into a helpless kitten and pulled Garrett aside.
She pouted, looking pathetic.
"Mr. Blackwell, why are we leaving? You promised you'd spend the next two days with me. "
Garrett leaned down and pressed a kiss to Lila's lips.
His large hands moved familiarly to her waist.
"Don't be silly, baby. Vivian is blind now. We'll have plenty of chances later. I'll buy you that designer bag you wanted when we get back. "
"She's a total pushover. As long as I say a few sweet things, she'll follow me like a lost puppy. "
"If she hadn't saved my life, I would have divorced her already to avoid the bad press. My heart is only yours, okay? Stop being mad. "
I stood a short distance away, my fists clenched so tight my nails dug into my palms.
So, this was what three years with Garrett Blackwell amounted to.
In his eyes, I was just a brainless woman obsessed with him.
Everything he did for me now was just a performance to keep his reputation intact.
I guess I should just consider these past few years as a donation to a stray dog.
Lila grinned at his words and pulled his face down for another long, deep kiss.
During the kiss, she didn't forget to throw me a triumphant, mocking look.
I suppressed my rage and turned away.
Fine, Garrett. Since you want a divorce so badly, I'll give you exactly what you want.
2.
Garrett dropped me off at our house and sped away immediately.
He claimed he had urgent business at the office, but I knew he was taking Lila shopping.
On the ride back, Lila had been showing him pictures of designer bags and whining.
He had agreed to buy one without a second thought.
I recognized the bagDit was the latest Herms, costing nearly fifty thousand dollars.
I had once hinted that I wanted a bag like that for our anniversary.
His response back then was cold.
"Vivian, can you stop being so wasteful? Is a bag like that made of gold? Don't be so shallow. "
It turned out he didn't hate spending the money; he just hated spending it on me.
I dragged my exhausted body upstairs.
When I opened the door, our oversized wedding photo hit me like a slap in the face.
Three years ago, in front of all our friends and family, he had knelt on one knee.
He swore he would love me for the rest of his life.
Now, that memory was nothing but a cruel joke.
I walked over, ripped the photo off the wall, and shoved it into the trash can.
Right then, my mentor called, her voice sounding hopeful.
"Vivian, have you really made up your mind about the London offer? It's a three-year commitment. "
I took a deep breath and slid the wedding ring off my finger.
"I'm sure. "
My mentor couldn't hide her excitement.
Three years ago, she had tried so hard to convince me to go.
I was at the peak of my career when I chose to marry Garrett.
I could have gone abroad to further my studies and built a fashion empire of my own.
If I had gone then, I would probably be a world-renowned designer by now.
Instead, I gave it all up for Garrett.
I became a nameless freelancer taking small online orders just to get by.
More importantly, I became his live-in maid.
I took care of every detail of his life so he could focus entirely on his business.
My mentor always felt it was a tragedy for my talent to go to waste.
She told me that if I ever changed my mind, the door would always be open.
Thankfully, it wasn't too late.
3.
That evening, Garrett came home with Lila trailing behind him.
She was proudly carrying her new designer bag.
The smug, happy expression on her face was almost nauseating.
"Hungry? I brought you a cupcake. Lila picked it out specifically for you. "
Garrett tossed the box onto the table in front of me.
I glanced at it. It was a strawberry cupcake.
Had Garrett forgotten that I am deathly allergic to strawberries?
I didn't give them a polite reaction. I swept the cake straight into the garbage.
Garrett didn't expect such a response, and his face instantly turned grim.
Before he could snap at me, Lila started sobbing.
She looked so fragile and wronged that it was almost impressive.
"Vivian, do you hate me? I was just trying to be nice. Why would you throw it away? "
"I really don't understand what I did to upset you. You even blocked me on WhatsApp. "
Lila whimpered, acting as if I had committed a federal crime.
Garrett's expression darkened even further.
He grabbed my wrist, his patience clearly exhausted.
"Vivian, ever since we got back from the mountains, you've been acting like a different person. Where is the kind, graceful woman I married? "
"Lila has been working so hard to take care of you. How can you treat her like this? You blocked her? Is this how you show gratitude? "
I felt a wave of mockery wash over me.
How could I not change? After seeing my husband with another woman?
Was I supposed to act like everything was normal?
Garrett was right about one thing; I had received plenty of special care from them.
But after I checked the hidden security cameras in our house, I saw the truth.
Lila had been wearing my clothes and getting intimate with Garrett in every corner of our home.
The thought made my stomach turn.
I wanted to scream and ask if he really wanted to take care of me.
Or if "taking care of me " was just a cover for their disgusting affair.
I didn't want to argue about the details anymore. His cheating was a fact.
I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice steady.
I looked into his angry eyes and said coldly, "I'm allergic to strawberries. "
His eyes flickered as he suddenly remembered.
The tension in his forehead eased slightly.
He knew exactly how severe my allergy was.
One time, I had almost died after accidentally eating a piece of strawberry garnish.
He slowly let go of my wrist and regained his calm, composed CEO persona.
"I'll go make you something else. "
He walked into the kitchen, looking like the perfect, devoted husband.
Lila followed him immediately, and the two of them started busy-working together.
The kitchen door was glass, so I could see everything.
Lila wrapped her arms around Garrett's waist, whispering in his ear and giggling.
Garrett responded by affectionately pinching her nose.
The intimacy was natural and practiced.
It hurt to watch, so I went to my bedroom.
A few minutes later, Lila walked in carrying a bowl of hot soup.
Right in front of my face, she spat into the soup.
Then, she put on a fake smile and held the bowl out to me.
I felt a surge of disgust and pushed the bowl away.
She wouldn't give up and kept trying to force it into my hands.
During the struggle, the bowl slipped and shattered on the floor.
The scalding liquid splashed everywhere.
My hands and feet were instantly covered in painful, red welts.
A sharp, stinging pain radiated through my body.
But Lila was the one who screamed first.
In an instant, her eyes were filled with crocodile tears.
Garrett came charging out of the kitchen.
He didn't even look at my burns; he rushed straight to Lila, checking her over.
"Lila! Are you okay? Did you get burned? "
His instinctive reaction sent a chill through my heart.
I didn't want to witness their little drama, so I turned to find some burn cream.
But in the next second, my wrist was gripped in a vice-like hold.
His eyes were bloodshot and terrifying.
"Vivian, are you crazy? Lila was kind enough to bring you soup, and you intentionally threw it at her? "
I glanced at Lila's hand. A few tiny drops had splattered on her.
But Garrett's entire world was focused on her minor discomfort.
He ignored the blistering skin on my hands and feet.
I felt a deep, cold emptiness inside.
Lila stepped out from behind him, looking like a misunderstood saint.
"Garrett, don't blame Vivian. I'm sure she didn't mean it. She's blind, so she probably just lost her balance. It's my fault for being clumsy. "
The more she "explained, " the more Garrett believed I did it on purpose.
The disgust in his eyes grew.
He pulled the sobbing Lila into his arms.
"Lila, you're too kind. That's why people like her take advantage of you. "
He glared at me with pure contempt.
"Don't think being blind is a get-out-of-jail-free card. Don't think you can do whatever you want just because I spoil you. My patience is running out. "
"If you keep acting like a hysterical brat, maybe we should spend some time apart to clear our heads. "
The tube of burn cream slipped from my fingers.
He had finally said what he was really thinking.
He scooped Lila up in his arms and kissed her forehead.
As he carried her out, Lila shot me one last smug, triumphant look over his shoulder.
I clenched my fists, wanting nothing more than to punch them both.
Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was my mentor.
"Vivian, can I book your flight for next month? "
"Also, one of your old seniors is over there. You can reach out to him when you arrive. "
Hearing my mentor's voice through the speaker, Garrett's face turned sour.
"London? Where are you going? "
"Who is this senior? Why would you go see him? "
4.
"Yes, that works. Thank you, " I said before hanging up.
Garrett looked at me like I was a criminal.
His voice rose an octave, full of interrogation.
"Why the hell are you going abroad? You can't even see. How is a blind person going to travel? What kind of game are you playing now? "
I felt like laughing. The doctor had said it was only temporary blindness.
I didn't realize that in just two months, Garrett had already written me off as a useless invalid.
I stayed perfectly calm despite his fury.
"I'm getting a divorce, and then I'm leaving. "
A flash of shock crossed Garrett's face.
I had been with him for years and had never once complained.
But since this intern appeared, an unbridgeable gap had formed between us.
It started with late nights at the office, then not coming home at all.
His entire attitude toward me had shifted.
The signs of his cheating were everywhere.
I had just been too blinded by love to admit it.
Lila stepped forward again, crossing her arms and looking down her nose at me.
"Vivian, do you even hear yourself? You want to divorce Garrett? He's such a successful man. Are you really going to throw that away? "
"I'm telling you, Garrett is a powerful CEO now. And look at youDa washed-up housewife who's also blind. Don't say I didn't warn you when you're begging for him back. "
Lila let out a cold, mocking laugh.
I didn't hold back and snapped right back at her.
"Do you really think I'm like you? Do you think I'm desperate to cling to his money? "
"Lila, I've seen plenty of girls like youDsocial climbers who think they can build a life on someone else's marriage. Your ending won't be any better than mine. "
Lila's face turned bright red with rage. She looked like she wanted to hit me.
But she forced herself to swallow her anger.
She couldn't ruin her "innocent girl " image in front of Garrett.
Garrett walked toward me, his tone softening slightly.
"Vivian, stop talking nonsense. We've been married for three years. You don't just walk away from that. "
"I know I've neglected you lately. Let's just talk this through. "
It was only then that he finally noticed my burns.
He reached out to put some ointment on them, but Lila made a pained sound behind him.
"Garrett, it hurts so much... "
Without a second thought, he dropped the medicine and rushed Lila out the door.
I stood there in the silence, watching them leave.
Garrett didn't come home for the next several days.
He didn't even send a text to check on me.
It was a blessing that my sight had returned. If I were still blind, I wouldn't know how to survive this.
I didn't waste any time.
I hired a lawyer to draft the divorce papers.
Our marriage was over.
I knew Garrett wouldn't make it easy, though.
Technically, I was still the legal representative of his company.
He was a shark; he never made a deal that didn't benefit him.
I went into the study and opened my laptop.
I downloaded all the footage from the hidden cameras in the house.
The things they had done in my home while I was "blind " were beyond disgusting.
I fought back the urge to vomit as I copied the files.
This was the evidence I needed to make sure he left with nothing.
While organizing the files, I discovered something even more shocking.
