The doctors voice from earlier still echoed through the fog left behind by the anesthesia, each word cutting through the numbness in my body.

We tried everything, Mrs. Jones, but there was nothing more we could do. The toxin had already spread too far. Your placenta detached Im sorry.

Even in my dazed state, memory dragged me back to lunchtime.

Victoria.

Nathaniels oldest friendthe woman who had been around so long she practically felt like part of the family. She had shown up carrying a thermos, smiling like she always did.

Its my grandmothers herbal soup, shed said warmly, unscrewing the lid. Its good for pregnant women. Helps keep the baby strong.

I hadnt wanted to drink it. The smell alone turned my stomach; it was bitter and strangely metallic. But Nathaniel had rested a hand on my shoulder and given it a reassuring squeeze.

Come on, Audrey, hed urged. Vicky went through all that effort just for you. Dont be rude.

So I drank it.

Two hours later, I collapsed on the bathroom tiles, blood pooling beneath me.

Darkness kept swallowing me whole, only to spit me back out again. Consciousness came in brief, disjointed flashes. A deep ache pulsed through my lower abdomenheavy, hollow, unbearable. It felt as if something vital had been carved out of me, leaving behind nothing but emptiness.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to break apart and mourn the child stolen from me.

Then voices pierced the silence.

Why did you save her?

The voice was unmistakablesharp, furious, trembling with anger.

Arent we supposed to get rid of her? Victoria hissed. That was our plan, Nathaniel. She loses the baby, spirals into grief, and eventually kills herself. Then were free to be together. But instead, you called an ambulance.

Every muscle in my body locked.

My lungs stopped working.

Then Nathaniel spoke.

His voice was calm. Irritated.

Not remorseful. Not horrified.

You know perfectly well I cant let her die yet.

The coldness in his tone sent ice through my veins.

The merger isnt finished, he continued. Her fathers logistics company still hasnt signed the final transfer documents. If Audrey dies before the paperwork is completed next month, her shares go to David. And David will kill the deal.

A stunned silence followed.

Then Victoria spoke again, her anger melting into wounded accusation.

So thats why youre upset? she said, voice trembling. Because I killed your baby? Is that it? You actually want her? You want to play happy family with Audrey?

Nathaniel gave a dismissive laugh.

The sound hit harder than a slap.

Dont be ridiculous, he said. I dont care about the baby. It was a fetus.

Something inside me shattered.

The only issue is my grandfather, he continued casually. He was excited about having an heir. Losing the pregnancy complicates things. Now Ill have to manage his expectations.

But you saved her, Victoria insisted.

Nathaniel exhaled impatiently.

No. I protected an asset.

Asset.

Not wife.

Not mother of his child.

Asset.

And because she miscarried, I cant abandon her right away, he went on. Ill need to play the grieving husband for a few months. Filing for divorce while shes recovering would raise too many questions.

A few months?

Victorias frustration sharpened. I heard the tap of her heels against the hospital floor as she moved closer to him.

I cant wait that long, Nathaniel. I need you now. I did all this for us.

Vicky, stop.

No.

Her voice lowered, thick with seduction.

Show me you dont want her. Show me Im the only one. Make me believe youre mine. Sleep with me. Right here. Get me pregnant, or I swear Ill walk away.

Silence.

Then Nathaniel answered.

All right.

Two simple words.

Two words that destroyed whatever remained of my heart.

Fabric rustled.

Breathing changed.

Muted moans followed.

The sounds were soft, but to me they were deafeningwet, obscene reminders that my husband was betraying me with the woman who had killed our child, only a few feet from my hospital bed.

I stayed perfectly still.

I didnt flinch.

I barely breathed.

Tears slipped from beneath my closed eyelids, hot and relentless, soaking into my hair.

The grief that had consumed me moments earlier began to mutate.

It hardened.

Darkened.

Turned into something cold and merciless.

Rage.

I waited.

I waited until the sounds stopped.

Until clothes were straightened.

Until Nathaniel said hed go get coffee.

Until Victoria laughed about their little secret.

Only after the door shut behind them did I open my eyes.

My hand shook violently as I reached for the phone on the bedside table.

I dialed the one person who had never trusted Nathaniel.

The call connected.

David? My voice cracked.

Audrey? My brother sounded panicked. Oh my GodIm coming. Nathaniel called. He said you lost

Nathaniel lied.

I cut him off.

The words scraped against my throat, raw and painful.

Listen carefully. I need you to file a case. Right now.

He went silent.

For what?

Attempted murder.

The words tasted bitter.

Victoria poisoned me. She killed my baby.

An hour later, the hospital door didnt open gently.

It burst inward.

Nathaniel stormed into the room like a man on the verge of violence. He stopped at the foot of my bed, gripping the railing so hard his knuckles blanched.

Have you lost your mind? he hissed, his voice low but trembling with fury.

I looked at him without emotion.

Nice to see you too, Nathaniel.

Dont do this, he snapped. My lawyers just called. David filed criminal charges? Attempted murder against Victoria? What the hell were you thinking?

I held his gaze.

She poisoned me, Nathaniel. She killed our son.

She didnt do it on purpose!

He shouted the words so fast he didnt even realize what he had admitted.

It was an accident! The herbs caused a bad reactionnothing more. But you escalated everything! You sent the police after her?

She killed my child.

Shes family!

His palm slammed onto the tray table, rattling the water pitcher.

We grew up together! You dont send family to prison over a mistake!

His face twisted with panic.

Do you understand what this scandal could do to the merger? My grandfather will collapse when he sees the headlines.

I stared at him.

Thats what matters to you?

My voice came out calm.

Deadly calm.

The headlines?

Im trying to protect our future!

He leaned closer, his shadow swallowing the bed.

I need this merger, Audrey. If this lawsuit continues, investors will walk. Everything falls apart.

He inhaled sharply, visibly forcing himself to calm down.

Then his voice softened.

That familiar tone.

The one he always used whenever he wanted something from me.

Listen, he said gently. I know youre grieving. Youve been through trauma. Your hormones are all over the place. Youre not thinking rationally.

I said nothing.

Victoria feels awful, he continued. Shes devastated. But we deal with this privately. We dont drag family matters into court.

You want me to withdraw the case.

It wasnt a question.

His jaw tightened.

I need you to.

He emphasized each word.

Call David. Tell him you misunderstood. Tell him grief made you irrational. Fix this, Audrey.

His eyes hardened.

Or I swear to God

I stared at him.

Really stared.

I looked at the man I had loved for five years.

And in that moment, I understood something horrifying.

The man I loved was gone.

Or maybe he had never existed at all.

Here stood a husband looming over his wifehis wife who had just lost their childthreatening her, all to protect his mistress.

I didnt tell him I knew about the affair.

I didnt tell him I had heard every word of their plan.

That truth would remain my weapon.

For now.

I slowly closed my eyes.

Fine, I said quietly.

Relief flashed across his face too quickly.

Then I finished.

Ill drop the lawsuit

I opened my eyes and met his.

if you agree to divorce me.

Nathaniel had not even fully registered the word divorce when the door swung open with enough force to hit the wall.

Victoria rushed inside.

The cruel satisfaction I had seen on her face earlierwhen she believed I was unconsciouswas nowhere to be found. In its place was a picture of devastation so polished it might have fooled anyone who hadnt heard her true voice. Her cheeks were blotchy from crying, and mascara had run down her face in dramatic black streaks.

It was a flawless act.

Audrey! she cried as she hurried to my bedside. Oh God, Audrey, pleaseplease listen to me!

Before I could move away, she grabbed my hand. Her palm was clammy, her grip desperate.

I never meant for this to happen, she sobbed, her voice trembling at all the right moments. You have to believe me. I love you like a sister. I would never intentionally hurt you or your baby. It was only soup. Maybe you had an allergic reaction, or maybe the herbs were badI dont know. Im so sorry.

I lowered my gaze to the woman clutching me.

Just hours earlier, she had been ordering my husband to impregnate her while I lay motionless in the same room.

Now she wanted sympathy.

Let go of me, I said, every word tight with barely restrained anger.

Audrey, please, she begged, acting as though she hadnt heard me. Then she slid down from the edge of the bed and dropped to her knees on the floor. Pressing her palms together as if in prayer, she bowed her head and continued pleading. Ill do anything. Ill pay every hospital bill. Ill go to church every day. Just please, tell David to stop. Dont let them put me in jail. I wont survive there.

I yanked my hand away.

You should have thought about prison before you poisoned me.

My voice came out cold and sharp.

You killed my son, Victoria. There is nothing you can say that will undo that. Youre going to prison, and I hope you spend the rest of your life there.

Audrey, enough.

Nathaniel stepped forward so abruptly that both of us looked up.

I turned toward him, and what struck me most was not his anger.

It was the complete absence of concern for me.

He wasnt looking at me like a husband worried about his grieving wife.

He was looking at Victoria like a man terrified of losing something precious.

Look at her, Nathaniel said, gesturing toward Victoria, who was still crying on the hospital floor. Shes on her knees begging you. Shes humiliated herself in front of you. What more do you want?

A laugh escaped me, but it sounded broken even to my own ears.

What more do I want?

I stared at him.

She took a life, Nathaniel. Our child. The child we created together.

It was an accident!

His voice exploded through the room, and the last of his patience vanished.

Why are you being so vindictive? he demanded. Shes family. Shes been part of my life since we were five years old. I am not going to stand by and let you ruin her over a mistake.

The words settled heavily between us.

I went still.

So this is your choice.

My voice had gone quiet, almost eerily calm.

Youre choosing her.

This time, I wasnt asking.

Nathaniel clenched his jaw.

No, he said sharply. Im choosing common sense.

He exhaled as if I were exhausting him.

Youre emotional, Audrey. Youre grieving, and youre not thinking clearly. First you ask for a divorce, then you file a criminal case against my best friend. This is absurd.

He bent down, helped Victoria to her feet, and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

The gesture felt intimate.

Protective.

Instinctive.

When he looked at me again, his expression had gone completely cold.

Im taking Victoria home, he said. She shouldnt stay here in this condition, and frankly, neither should you. Well talk again once youve calmed down and stopped this nonsense.

My fingers tightened around the bedsheet.

If you walk out that door with her, I said quietly, dont bother coming back.

Nathaniel did not hesitate.

Not even for a heartbeat.

Then dont wait for me.

And just like that, he turned away.

He guided the woman who had murdered our child out of the room as though she were the injured party, leaving his wife alone behind him.

When the door shut, silence returned.

But this silence felt different.

Heavier.

It pressed down on my chest until breathing felt difficult.

I stared at the closed door as tears finally spilled over.

This time, I wasnt crying only for my baby.

I was crying for the five years I had wasted believing in something that had never existed.

My thoughts drifted backward, pulled toward memories I suddenly saw with brutal clarity.

I remembered our wedding.

It had been extravagant, the kind of ceremony people talked about for monthsnot because of romance, but because it symbolized the union of two powerful families.

I remembered walking down the aisle toward Nathaniel.

He had looked striking in his tuxedo.

Elegant. Refined. Every inch the perfect groom.

But now that memory felt wrong.

He hadnt smiled.

Not truly.

At the time, I had convinced myself it was nerves. Nathaniel had always been reserved, always controlled, and I assumed his lack of expression meant nothing.

Then I remembered something else.

The reception.

The whispers.

Wheres Victoria?

Why isnt she here?

At the time, everyone gave the same explanation.

She was in Paris.

Studying art.

That was the story.

Now, the truth was obvious.

She hadnt left to study.

She had left because she couldnt bear watching Nathaniel marry another woman.

The realization settled over me with sickening clarity.

I had never been the woman he wanted.

I had only ever been the woman he needed.

Nathaniel and Victoria had grown up together. Everyone knew them as the golden pairthe couple people assumed would eventually marry.

But my family owned the logistics empire Nathaniels grandfather desperately needed.

So Victoria was sent away.

And I was brought in.

I had been a substitute.

A convenient solution.

God, I had been so naive.

I truly believed I could make him love me.

I thought love could be earned through devotion, patience, and sacrifice. I believed that if I became the perfect wife, hosted the perfect dinners, supported him in every way, and eventually gave him a son, he would choose me.

I thought five years of marriage had to mean something.

It meant nothing.

Every dinner.

Every vacation.

Every whispered I love you.

All of it had been an act.

He had only been waiting for the right time.

Waiting for the merger to be completed.

Waiting for the final documents to be signed.

Waiting until he no longer needed me.

Then he would throw me away and return to her.

Today, they had simply decided not to wait any longer.

A fresh wave of nausea rolled through me.

I wasnt just mourning.

I felt humiliated.

I had not been a wife.

I had been a placeholder.

An obstacle standing between two people and the life they believed they deserved.

And they had tried to remove me permanently.

The shrill vibration of my phone against the bedside table snapped me out of my spiraling thoughts.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand, took a shaky breath, and reached for the phone without checking the caller ID.

David? I asked, my voice rough. Did you file it?

Ms. Audrey?

I frowned immediately.

That wasnt David.

Sarah?

I pushed myself upright.

Why are you calling from Davids phone? Where is he?

Sarah sounded panicked.

I I didnt know who else to call.

Behind her, I could hear chaosphones ringing nonstop, people shouting, footsteps rushing across a floor.

Something was terribly wrong.

My pulse spiked.

What happened? I asked, gripping the phone harder. Is David okay?

The police are here, Sarah whispered, and her voice broke.

My stomach dropped.

The police?

My hand tightened.

What are you talking about?

They raided the office.

I felt cold all over.

What?

They arrested him, Ms. Audrey, Sarah said, barely holding herself together. They took Mr. David away in handcuffs about five minutes ago.

My heart stopped.

Why?

Sarah sucked in a shaky breath.

They said they said he committed something illegal.

I gripped the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. Still wearing my hospital gown, I paced the small room despite the cramps twisting through my abdomen every few steps. Pain lanced through me whenever I moved, but I barely registered it.

What do you mean its a done deal? I demanded, my voice trembling with anger. David didnt embezzle anything. The evidence is fake.

On the other end of the line, our family attorney, Mr. Henderson, sighed heavily.

The files were recovered from Davids encrypted personal drive, Audrey, he said wearily. Five million dollars was transferred to an account in the Cayman Islands. The metadata matches his credentials. The district attorney isnt interested in hearing claims of a setup. Theyre fast-tracking the case. Hes looking at fifteen years, minimum.

My breath caught.

Fifteen years?

The room swayed around me.

Henderson lowered his voice. Someone powerful wants your brother buried. Ive called every contact I have, but no one will help. The orders are coming from the top. I cant stop this.

The call ended, but I remained frozen, the phone still pressed to my ear.

I didnt need anyone to tell me who those powerful people were.

Nathaniels grandfather practically owned the citys legal system. And NathanielNathaniel was the one pulling the strings.

He had cornered me perfectly.

If I continued pursuing charges against Victoria for poisoning me and killing my child, David would spend the next fifteen years in prison for a crime he didnt commit.

Before I could think, my hand moved.

I ripped the IV from my arm.

Blood welled from the puncture site and dripped onto the floor, but I barely felt the sting.

By the time I reached the house, night had fallen.

The mansion was unnervingly quiet.

I found Nathaniel in his study.

He sat behind his mahogany desk, a glass of amber liquor in one hand, an open file in front of him. He didnt look surprised to see me. In fact, he barely reacted.

You should still be in the hospital, he said calmly. Discharging yourself against medical advice was reckless.

Let him go.

My voice came out rough, but steady.

Nathaniel took a slow sip of his drink.

I assume you mean your brother, he said. Terrible situation. Embezzlement leaves quite a stain on a reputation.

Drop the act.

I slammed both palms onto his desk.

You planted the evidence. You had someone hack his drive and frame him. Youre using him as leverage.

Only then did Nathaniel look up.

There was no warmth in his eyes.

Only cold calculation.

And you, he said quietly, are threatening the woman I love.

The words hit like a slap.

Youre trying to ruin her with this ridiculous lawsuit and drag my family through the mud.

She murdered our son.

My voice cracked.

Nathaniels expression hardened.

And youre trying to destroy my future.

He stood, towering over me.

Since you want to handle this legally, lets discuss terms.

He slid a folder across the desk.

I looked down.

What is this?

A settlement.

He folded his arms.

Inside is a withdrawal of charges and a binding non-disclosure agreement. You will drop the lawsuit against Victoria, publicly state that this was all a misunderstanding caused by grief, and agree never to pursue legal action against her regarding the miscarriage.

I stared at the papers.

They wanted me to erase everything.

To protect my childs killer.

To surrender justice.

My throat tightened.

And if I refuse?

Nathaniel sat back down, maddeningly calm.

Then David goes to prison.

He shrugged.

Hes soft, Audrey. Maximum security will break him. He wont last long.

His gaze sharpened.

Do you really want his blood on your hands too?

Nausea surged through me.

I hated him.

The hatred felt violent enough to consume me.

My eyes flicked to the silver letter opener on his desk. For one wild second, I imagined driving it straight into his chest.

But I couldnt.

I couldnt risk David.

He was the only family I had left.

Fine.

The word barely sounded human.

Three hours later, I sat in Davids living room with a cup of black coffee cooling between my hands.

David sat across from me, guilt written all over his face.

Im sorry, he said hoarsely. I know what happened. The charges vanished ten minutes after you left the hospital.

His jaw tightened.

He traded your justice for my freedom, didnt he?

I stared into my coffee.

It doesnt matter.

It does matter.

David slammed his cup down.

He framed me to protect that bitch. We cant let him get away with this. We can refile. We can fight back

We cant.

I cut him off.

I signed an NDA. If I speak about the poisoning or sue Victoria again, the evidence against you comes back. He has us trapped.

David sank into the sofa.

So thats it? he asked bitterly. He wins? After everything hes done to you?

No.

I set my coffee down and finally looked at him.

Something inside me had changed.

The tears were gone.

So was the grief.

What remained was something colder.

Stronger.

Resolve.

David studied me carefully.

What are you going to do?

First, I want the divorce papers prepared immediately.

His brows rose.

Im leaving that marriage. I dont want alimony, property, or a single cent from him. I want a clean break.

David nodded.

I can have them ready tomorrow morning.

He hesitated.

But Audrey how are you going to fight him? The Jones family is untouchable.

A faint smile touched my lips, though there was no warmth in it.

Im going to ruin him.

The words came out soft and deliberate.

Ill dismantle him piece by piece. Ill take his company, destroy his reputation, and make him watch everything he loves burn.

David stared at me in silence.

When he finally went to shower, I waited until the bathroom door closed before reaching for my phone.

My fingers trembled as I scrolled through my contacts.

Down.

Further down.

Until I reached a number I hadnt called in six years.

A number I once swore never to use.

Jackson.

I called him Uncle Jackson, though he wasnt really my uncle. He was a distant relativethe familys black sheep. He operated in shadows, arranged deals that never existed on paper, and had a reputation for making impossible things happen.

My father had forbidden me from contacting him.

The phone rang twice.

Then he answered.

Well, well.

His voice was gravelly with amusement.

Little Audrey. This is unexpected. Run out of charity galas to attend?

I need something from you.

I skipped pleasantries.

A low chuckle came through the line.

You know I dont do favors, sweetheart. I do business.

I know.

I took a slow breath.

Do you remember the offer you made before I married Nathaniel?

Silence.

Then

The marriage proposal?

Yes.

I steadied myself.

You said you had someone in mind. Someone whose empire could merge with our logistics business globally.

Jackson laughed.

I remember. You rejected it. Said you were marrying for love.

His tone turned mocking.

So tell mehow did love work out?

It didnt.

My voice went cold.

And Im ready to accept.

The amusement disappeared.

If you do this, theres no turning back.

Good.

I didnt hesitate.

Thats exactly what I want.

A pause.

Then he spoke.

I can have the jet ready in five days.

I closed my eyes.

Fine.

Jacksons voice lowered, satisfaction threading through every word.

Then start preparing yourself.

He paused.

Youre about to marry your ex-husbands most dangerous rival.

Nathaniel lifted his wineglass and smiled as though he were hosting the perfect family dinner.

This, he declared, sweeping his gaze across the table, is what a real family looks likechoosing forgiveness, staying united, and moving forward.

Then he turned to me, wearing that polished, devastating smile he used so well in public. It was flawless, charming, and completely empty.

Im glad weve finally put all that unpleasantness behind us, Audrey, he said. His attention shifted to my brother. David, you have to admit, this wine is exceptional.

Excellent, David replied in an even tone before taking a measured sip. Judging by the look in his eyes, he probably wished it were poison.

Nathaniel either didnt notice or didnt care. He turned toward Victoria, and his expression softened in a way I hadnt seen directed at me in years.

And Victoria, he said warmly, its nice to see you smiling again.

Victoria let out a cheerful laugh that made my skin crawl.

Im just so happy were all getting along, she said brightly. She reached across the table and placed her hand over mine. Her touch was warm and familiar, and somehow that made it worse. Thank you for forgiving me, Audrey. I know this whole situation has been difficult, but I really hope we can become closer after this.

She squeezed my hand.

Like sisters.

Every instinct in my body screamed at me to pull away.

I didnt.

Instead, I forced a smile so tight it felt painful.

Of course, Victoria, I said in a syrupy voice. Like sisters.

Nathaniel looked pleased with himself as he cut into his duck.

I told you shed come around, he said, sounding smug. Audrey has always been practical. She knows how to see the bigger picture.

I picked up my fork and took a small bite before speaking.

Since you mentioned the bigger picture, I said lightly, Ive been thinking about something your grandfather said.

Nathaniel paused, knife suspended over his plate.

What part?

The part about an heir.

I said it casually, as if discussing weather.

He seemed deeply disappointed about the accident. Hes been calling almost every day, asking when we plan to try again. He keeps saying the Jones family needs someone to carry the legacy.

Victoria went rigid.

The subtle shift in her posture didnt escape me. Her eyes flicked toward Nathaniel, alarm flashing across her face.

Nathaniel cleared his throat.

Well, Grandfather can be impatient, he said carefully. But youre still recovering, sweetheart. The doctor said

The doctor said Im physically fine.

The lie came easily.

I tilted my head and smiled.

And it made me think about something else. Our fifth wedding anniversary is in five days, isnt it?

I leaned forward and rested my chin on my hand, staring at him with deliberate softness.

What if we celebrate properly? Maybe a honeymoon. Somewhere beautiful. The Maldives, perhaps.

I let the suggestion hang for a beat.

We could try again, I said gently. For the baby.

Nathaniel blinked.

His gaze flicked to Victoria, then back to me.

I could practically hear the calculations in his head.

He didnt want me.

He wanted her.

But he still needed his grandfathers approval, and more importantly, he needed me cooperative until the merger was finalized.

That sounds He forced a smile. Wonderful.

He reached for his wineglass.

A honeymoon. Just the two of us?

Just us, I said.

A fresh start.

Victorias fingers tightened around her glass.

But, Nathaniel added quickly, dabbing his mouth with a napkin, before we disappear on some romantic getaway, we still need to finalize the merger.

There it was.

Business.

Always business.

The transfer papers for your fathers logistics company still need to be completed, he continued. The board has been anxious. You know how these things are.

I waved my hand as if dismissing something trivial.

Oh, the merger.

I bent slightly and reached beneath the table.

I actually brought the papers.

From under the table, I pulled out a thick manila envelope and placed it beside the roast duck.

Nathaniels eyes sharpened instantly.

There it was.

That hungry look.

The expression of a predator spotting easy prey.

He reached for the envelope, but I placed my hand over it first.

Not so fast, I said with playful disapproval. Opening paperwork during dinner is terribly rude.

Nathaniel laughed, though the sound came out strained with anticipation.

Right. Of course.

He tried to sound casual.

We can review it afterward.

Actually, I said, lifting my hand from the envelope, theres nothing to review.

I slid it toward him.

I already signed everything.

Nathaniel froze.

You did?

I nodded.

This afternoon. I already sent digital copies to legal. Those are just the original signed documents for your files.

He snatched the envelope and opened it immediately.

His fingers moved quickly as he flipped through the pages until he found the signature page.

The moment he saw my name, I watched tension leave his body.

He exhaled like a man who had been holding his breath for weeks.

Then he looked at me.

For the first time in a very long while, his happiness seemed genuine.

Not because he loved me.

Because he believed he had won.

He thought he had taken everything.

My child.

My dignity.

My inheritance.

Youre incredible, Audrey, he said, closing the folder. Truly. This changes everything.

It certainly does, David murmured into his wineglass.

Nathaniel didnt catch the meaning.

I lifted my own glass.

Well then, I said smoothly, shall we toast? To the merger and to our anniversary?

Nathaniel raised his glass without hesitation.

To us.

Our glasses touched.

Victoria joined in, her smile bright and triumphant.

She looked almost radiant.

She thought she had won too.

She probably imagined herself replacing me soon enough, boarding that honeymoon flight in my place.

Later that night, silence settled over the house.

Nathaniel was in the shower, humming under the running water.

He was in excellent spirits.

I sat at my vanity, removing my earrings one by one and placing them carefully on the marble surface.

He had no idea.

He didnt know the signature on those documents meant nothing.

He didnt know that three hours before dinner, David and I had completed an entirely different transfer.

My fathers company had never been a single operating entity.

It was a holding company.

And as majority shareholder, I had the legal authority to restructure every asset under it.

I hadnt handed Nathaniel the company.

I had handed him the shell.

The brand.

The logo.

The office leases.

That was all.

The real assetsthe trucks, warehouses, shipping routes, contracts, and operating capitalhad already been moved into a separate trust.

A trust controlled solely by David.

A structure Nathaniel had no access to and no authority over.

Tomorrow morning, when his legal team filed those merger papers, they would discover the truth.

They had just acquired a corpse.

A company that looked valuable on paper but carried nothing except debt and liabilities.

By the time they understood what had happened, I would already be gone.

Honey?

Nathaniels voice drifted from the bathroom.

Are you coming to bed?

In a minute, I called back smoothly. Im just finishing my skincare.

My phone buzzed against the marble countertop.

One message.

Unknown number.

I picked it up.

Unknown: Hello, my bride.

My pulse skipped.

Another message arrived almost immediately.

Unknown: The jet is fueled. The contract is ready. Are you prepared to marry me and destroy your ex-husband?

A third message appeared.

Unknown: If your answer is yes, Ill see you soon.

Eat, Audrey, eat, Grandfather Vince said, motioning toward the lavish spread of roasted lamb and buttered root vegetables with his unsteady hand. Youve grown far too thin, and you look pale. Has my grandson been neglecting to feed you properly?

He shot Nathaniel a stern look, his thick white brows drawing together.

Nathaniel continued slicing into his meat with controlled, precise movements, though irritation flickered across his face.

Ive been taking good care of her, Grandfather, he replied evenly. Shes still recovering. Healing takes time.

Recovering? Grandfather Vince gave a dismissive snort. A miscarriage is not some ordinary illness. It isnt a cold you simply recover from in a few days. It demands care. Patience. Compassion.

Then he turned to me, and the genuine sorrow in his pale blue eyes made something twist painfully in my chest.

I am truly sorry, my dear, he said softly. I had been looking forward to meeting the child. You said it was going to be a boy, didnt you?

My throat tightened.

Yes, I said quietly. A boy.

Grandfather reached across the table and gently patted my hand.

There will be other children, he said with quiet certainty. Youre young, and youre strong. Audrey, you are the best thing that has happened to this family in years. When your parents passed, I promised I would care for you as if you were my own daughter. I meant every word.

I lowered my gaze to my plate, blinking rapidly.

This was the part that hurt most.

Leaving Nathaniel required no courage anymore.

Walking away from his wealth cost me nothing.

But leaving this old manthis man who had become the closest thing I had to a father over the past ten yearsfelt like tearing off a piece of myself.

He had no idea what Nathaniel truly was.

He didnt know the darkness hidden beneath the legacy he had spent a lifetime building.

Its difficult to heal, I said carefully, when the reason for the pain is still close by.

The entire table went silent.

Grandfather Vinces expression sharpened immediately.

What do you mean by that?

Audrey, Nathaniel said under his breath, warning laced through his voice.

I lifted my head and widened my eyes as though I had spoken without thinking.

OhI didnt mean I forced hesitation into my voice. Its nothing. I just meant the stress. And Victoria.

Grandfathers frown deepened.

Victoria? he repeated. What does that girl have to do with your miscarriage?

I hesitated just long enough to appear panicked.

She made the soup, I blurted, then quickly covered my mouth. Oh noI shouldnt have said that.

Nathaniel went rigid.

Grandfathers voice dropped into something far more dangerous than anger.

The soup?

His gaze locked on me.

The soup that made you ill?

I nodded weakly.

She made it?

It was an accident, I said hurriedly, glancing at Nathaniel as though desperate for help. She used the wrong herbs. She didnt know I was pregnant. Please dont be angry, Grandfather. She didnt mean any harm. Weve already forgiven her havent we, Nathaniel?

For one long second, nobody moved.

Then Grandfather Vince slammed his fist onto the table.

The silverware rattled violently.

She is not family!

The roar shook the dining room.

She is a parasite. A girl who has clung to this family for years, circling my grandson like a vulture since childhood. And now her carelessness has cost me my great-grandson?

Grandfather, please, Nathaniel said, rising from his chair. The color had drained from his face. It isnt like that. Victoria feels terrible.

I dont care how she feels!

Grandfather jabbed a trembling finger toward him.

I want that woman gone, Nathaniel. Do you understand me? I dont want her in your home, and I certainly dont want her anywhere near my company. And if I discover that you are still entertaining that woman while your wife mourns the loss of her child, I will remove you from my will so quickly you wont know what happened.

Nathaniels jaw locked.

He turned toward me, and the fury in his eyes was almost unbearable, but he couldnt lash out.

Not here.

Not in front of the one man who controlled everything he wanted.

Yes, Grandfather, he said through clenched teeth.

The drive home passed in suffocating silence.

The moment we stepped inside the house and the front door shut behind us, Nathaniel exploded.

What the hell was that? he shouted, hurling his keys onto the console table. You accidentally slipped? Dont insult me. You did that deliberately.

I didnt! I protested, stepping backward. He kept pressing me. I panicked.

Nathaniel dragged both hands through his hair in frustration as he paced across the foyer.

You just put a target on Victorias back, he snapped. Do you understand what youve done? He wants her out of my life. If Grandfather cuts me off, I lose everything.

I lowered my gaze.

Im sorry, I said softly. Ill fix it. Ill talk to him after we get back from the honeymoon.

The honeymoon, Nathaniel muttered bitterly.

His phone vibrated in his pocket again.

Victoria.

He glanced at the screen, and I watched his entire expression change.

The anger disappeared.

Concern replaced it instantly.

It was a softness he had not shown me in years.

Shes having a panic attack, he said under his breath. She heard what happened. Grandfather called her father and screamed at him.

He grabbed his coat.

I need to go.

I looked at him.

Now?

I let hurt seep into my voice.

Our flight is tomorrow morning. Were supposed to leave for the Maldives.

I cant leave her like this, Audrey, he said sharply. Ill calm her down and come back. Ill be home before the car arrives.

He didnt kiss me.

He didnt apologize.

He simply walked out.

Once again, he chose her.

He always chose her.

The next morning, sunlight streamed through the windows, bright and merciless.

I stood alone in the foyer with a small carry-on at my feet.

The house was silent.

Nathaniel never came home.

My phone rang.

I answered.

Audrey?

Nathaniel sounded rushed and breathless.

Listen, Im sorry, but I cant make the flight.

I stared ahead.

What?

Its Victoria, he said smoothly. The lie came effortlessly now. Shes sick. Really sick. High fever. Shes delirious. I cant leave her alone, and theres no one else to take care of her.

Oh, I said quietly. I understand.

Dont be upset, baby, he said, slipping into that soothing tone he used whenever he wanted compliance. You should go ahead. Take David with you so you dont travel alone. Ill catch the next flight tomorrow morning, I promise. Ill be there before dinner. Well still celebrate our anniversary.

Its alright, Nathaniel, I said. I understand.

He exhaled in relief.

Youre amazing.

Then his voice brightened.

Ohone more thing. The lawyers called. They filed the transfer papers this morning. Once everything clears, the logistics company officially becomes part of Jones Corp.

He sounded almost giddy.

Thank you, Audrey. You have no idea how much this means to me.

Im glad, I said.

Then I glanced toward the staircase.

I left something for you.

For me?

A gift.

I looked down at my bare ring finger.

Its in our bedroom. On the bed.

He laughed softly.

A gift? You didnt have to.

I wanted to, I said.

My voice stayed calm.

Its for our anniversary.

I paused.

You deserve it.

I cant wait to see it.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

I hope youll be happy, I said.

My voice remained steady.

Without me.

Silence.

Then confusion.

What do you mean, without

I ended the call before he could finish.

Without hesitation, I tossed the phone into the trash bin by the door.

Then I picked up my bag, turned toward the waiting car, and left for the airport without looking back.

Nathaniels POV

So its really done? she asked, spinning toward me, her eyes bright. The company is yours?

Ours, I corrected, pulling her onto my lap. The transfer was finalized this morning. The lawyers sent the confirmation an hour ago. Jones Corp now owns the controlling stake in Audreys family logistics empire. The merger is complete.

Victoria squealed, wrapping her arms around my neck and peppering my face with kisses. I knew you could do it! I knew it! Oh, Nathaniel, were going to be so rich!

We were already rich, Vicky, I laughed, enjoying her adoration. It was a nice change from Audreys quiet, depressing grief.

But now were powerful, she whispered against my ear. And she shes gone?

Shes on a plane to the Maldives as we speak, I said, checking my watch. Probably over the Indian Ocean by now. She thinks Im joining her tomorrow.

Victoria giggled. God, shes pathetic. She really believes youre coming?

Shes desperate, I said with a shrug. She lost the baby, she feels guilty about the lawsuit she just wants to be loved. It made her easy to manage.

I set the glass down. The thrill of the acquisition was still buzzing in my veins, but beneath it, a nagging curiosity pricked at me.

The gift.

Audrey had mentioned a gift. On the bed. For our anniversary.

Usually, Audreys gifts were sentimental rubbishframed photos, engraved watches, things that required me to feign emotion. But something about her voice on the phone earlier had been different. There was a finality to it. A strange calm.

I should go, I said, untangling myself from Victoria.

What? She pouted, clinging to my arm. Why? Stay. Celebrate with me.

I have to pack a bag, I lied smoothly. If I dont show up at the house to get ready for the airport tomorrow, the staff will talk. And Grandfather has spies everywhere. I need to keep up appearances for a few more days until the ink is fully dry on the merger.

Fine, Victoria sighed, kissing me hard. But come back tonight. I dont want to sleep alone.

Ill try.

I left her apartment, the cool night air hitting my face. I felt invincible. I had the girl, the money, and the company. I had won.

The drive to the estate was smooth. The house was dark when I arrived, looming against the night sky like a fortress. I parked the Aston Martin and let myself in.

Silence.

It wasnt just quiet; it was empty. The kind of silence that felt heavy, like the air had been sucked out of the rooms.

Audrey? I called out of habit, tossing my keys into the bowl.

No answer. Of course not. She was on a plane.

I walked up the stairs, loosening my tie. I needed to find this gift, pack a fake bag, and get back to Victoria.

I pushed open the door to the master bedroom.

The bed was made perfectly. The sheets were crisp and unwrinkled. In the center of the duvet sat a small velvet box and a thick manila envelope. Next to them was an iPad.

I walked over, frowning.

I opened the velvet box first.

My breath hitched. It was her wedding ring. The three-carat diamond I had put on her finger five years ago. It sat there, cold and glittering, accusing me.

Why would she leave her ring?

I picked up the envelope. It was heavy. I tore the seal and slid the contents out.

Divorce papers.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I scanned the document. Irreconcilable differences. No alimony requested. No asset division requested.

She wasnt just divorcing me. She was fleeing.

What the hell are you playing at, Audrey? I muttered, tossing the papers onto the bed.

I picked up the iPad. There was a sticky note attached to the screen: Play me.

I pressed the home button. A video file was queued up. I hit play.

Audreys face filled the screen. She was sitting in this very room, wearing a black dress I had never seen before. She wasnt crying. She wasnt the broken, grieving woman I had seen for the last month. Her eyes were clear. Sharp.

Hello, Nathaniel, she said. Her voice was calm. Terrifyingly calm.

If youre watching this, Im already gone. Youre probably holding the divorce papers. Dont worry, I made it easy for you. I dont want your money. I dont want your house. I dont want anything that has your name on it.

She leaned forward slightly, a small, cold smile playing on her lips.

You think you won, dont you? You have the merger. You have the logistics company. You have Victoria.

She paused, as if savoring the moment.

Check the transfer documents again, Nathaniel. Read the fine print. specifically, Schedule B, Section 4.

The screen went black.

A cold knot of dread tightened in my stomach. I scrambled for my phone, dialing my lead counsel, Henderson.

Nathaniel? Henderson answered on the second ring, sounding breathless. I was just about to call you. We have a problem.

What problem? I snapped, putting him on speaker as I paced the room. The transfer went through. I got the notification.

The transfer went through, yes, Henderson said, his voice trembling. But Nathaniel, the assets arent there.

I froze. What do you mean, the assets arent there?

Im looking at the inventory list right now. The holding company you just acquired its empty. The trucks, the shipping containers, the warehouse leases, the distribution contracts they were all moved.

Moved where? I roared, gripping the phone so hard the screen creaked. Thats impossible! I saw the papers!

They were moved into a separate irrevocable trust yesterday afternoon, Henderson stammered. The David & Audrey Family Trust. The transfer you signed today it was for the parent company only. You own the brand name, the office furniture, and the corporate debt. But the actual logistics network? The revenue stream? Its gone. Its all in the trust.

The room spun.

Who controls the trust? I whispered, though I already knew the answer.

David, Henderson said. And a silent partner. We dont know who yet.

I ended the call. I stared at the divorce papers on the bed.

She had played me.

The grieving widow. The submissive wife. The desperate woman begging for a honeymoon. It was all a lie. She had looked me in the eye, smiled, and handed me a hollow shell while she stole the pearl.

I owned nothing. Without those trucks, Jones Corp couldnt move its product. We would bleed millions within a week. The investors would riot. My grandfather

My grandfather would kill me.

I grabbed the iPad and threw it against the wall. It shattered with a satisfying crunch, but it didnt stop the panic rising in my throat like bile.

I snatched up my phone again and dialed Audreys number.

The number you have dialed is no longer in service.

I dialed David.

The number you have dialed is no longer in service.

I stood in the center of my empty bedroom, the silence deafening. The ring on the bed glinted under the chandelier, mocking me.

She knew. She knew about Victoria. She knew about the poison. She knew everything. And she hadnt just left me.

She had gutted me.

My phone buzzed in my hand. A text from Victoria.

Unknown Number: Did you find the gift? Is it something sexy? ;)

I stared at the screen, my vision blurring with rage.
