I hadn't been able to see for six months, and then suddenly, my sight returned.
But the boyfriend I'd been living with wasn't the same.
My body went rigid as I heard him talking on the phone outside our bedroom.
Ethan, even if you hated Sarah, six months of her sleeping with a stranger is enough punishment. Especially since it was your fault she went blind.
From the other end of the line, my boyfriend's voice was careless.
"She's the one who insisted on saving me. I was only with her because she looked like Vivian."
"Now I'm going to marry Vivian. She can be with you. You're twins, a blind girl wouldn't know the difference."
My whole body trembled uncontrollably.
A cliff ran down my spine.
The past six months of happiness were all a lie.
...
"Ethan, Sarah's pregnant. It's your baby. Shouldn't you come see her?"
My boyfriend refused.
"You're my brother. The kid will have the Carter last name anyway. He can call you dad, it's the same thing."
I heard the man on the other end sound displeased.
"Ethan, that's not right. Sarah seems happy about the baby. You're the father."
His voice was cold.
"Andrew, drop it. The only one for me is Vivian. If she hadn't insisted on being with me, Vivian wouldn't have gone overseas. She doesn't like sharing, you know? Sleeping with a different guy every night, that's my punishment for her!"
"Fine. I'll be back later to get my birth certificate. Don't tell anyone about me and Vivian getting married."
I lay in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling, biting my lip hard to keep from crying out.
The happiness I'd felt since going blind, it was all fake.
I'd just learned the good news about the pregnancy today, and "Ethan" had seemed so happy too.
But now I knew, it wasn't Ethan who was happy.
He hadn't felt guilty about causing my blindness.
He had even switched places with his brother to punish me for being with him, all for his precious Vivian.
For six months, I'd lived with a stranger, trying my best to please him.
The more I thought about it, the more I couldn't control my tears, sobbing quietly.
Hearing the noise, the man immediately pushed the door open, his face full of concern.
"Sarah, why are you awake? You should sleep more."
I didn't speak, just kept crying.
He had almost the exact same face as Ethan, his voice gentle.
Listening closely, there were only slight differences in their voices, probably the result of deliberate imitation.
"Why are you crying? Did you have a nightmare?"
He gently pulled me into his arms, as always.
I should have known.
Ethan, always so aloof, wouldn't have changed so drastically just because I went blind.
The worry on his face seemed genuine, which only deepened my pain.
"Yes, I had a nightmare, Ethan. I dreamed you were lying to me."
The man above me stiffened for a few seconds, then stroked my head.
"How could that be? I would never lie to you, Sarah. You must be sensitive because of the pregnancy. I'll always be by your side."
"But what if I never see again?"
His response was immediate.
"Then I'll stay with you forever."
The excitement in his voice was barely concealed.
My tears flowed silently.
"Ethan, do you really love me? The you I see now feels so strange."
He froze, clearly feeling guilty.
"When have I ever lied to you, Sarah?"
His phone vibrated for a few seconds. He looked at the message, his expression changing slightly.
"Okay, Sarah, don't think too much. I'll go warm you some milk."
Ethan, he shouldn't humiliate me like this.
Tears streamed down my face.
I grabbed my phone and finally saw Vivian's social media post.
She was showing off 999 roses, with Ethan kneeling at her feet, kissing her toes.
This scene was a huge shock.
Ethan hated submitting to anyone.
Plus, he had a thing about cleanliness.
My heart ached intensely.
Just then, I heard the sound of the door opening.
The next second, Ethan walked in, followed by a beautiful woman.
I was stunned for a few seconds.
He was smoking, a slightly mocking expression on his face, holding a glass of milk.
I clearly realized, this was the real Ethan.
And behind him, Vivian.
They walked in.
I sat there on the bed, numbly calling out, "Ethan."
He didn't speak.
I scrambled out of bed, but tripped and fell into his arms.
Inexplicable misery made my nose sting.
His breathing was a little ragged, and he said helplessly, "Sarah, can you not move around so much when you can't see?"
Vivian next to him clearly wasn't happy.
Ethan quickly let go of me, and Vivian kissed him hard on the face, as if showing off.
She stuck her tongue out at me.
Then, as if remembering something, she silently said to Ethan, "I forgot, she's blind."
Subconsciously, I didn't let them know I could see.
Ethan frowned and looked at Vivian tenderly.
I didn't expect Vivian to take the initiative to hug him and kiss him passionately in front of me.
Ethan hesitated, as if saying this wasn't right.
Vivian pouted, "She can't see anyway. Don't you want to spice things up?"
My eyes were red and swollen, and I clenched my fists.
The next second, they actually fell onto the bed, Ethan kissing her passionately.
I panicked, "Ethan, what are you doing?"
Vivian knelt down, paused in a certain position, and stared at me playfully. He groaned.
"No...nothing...I...I'm packing...I accidentally hit my leg."
I gritted my teeth, staring at them.
But they were particularly oblivious, until later, when he was eagerly taking her clothes off.
Vivian's expression was hazy, and she took a selfie with her phone, giggling.
Ethan wanted to continue, but his phone kept ringing, so he stopped.
I squeezed my fists tightly.
He walked past me, holding Vivian, and frowned.
I fell to the floor with a loud thud.
He just frowned at me and walked away without looking back.
The other Ethan stood at the door and lowered his voice, "Ethan, isn't this too much!"
Ethan's voice was cold, "Andrew, why are you being soft on this kind of woman? The colder you are, the more she clings to you."
"Okay, Vivian and I are getting our marriage license the day after tomorrow. Bring her to the courthouse too. Consider it her punishment!"
He lowered his head and kissed Vivian.
The other man hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
Ethan held Vivian and left the house without looking back.
All the color drained from my face.
Fake Ethan walked in and gently helped me up from the floor, "Sarah, you're still so childish. The floor is cold, get up quickly."
He had the exact same face as Ethan, but his personality was completely different.
At this moment, I felt a little dazed.
Which Ethan did I like?
Even after he fell asleep next to me, I couldn't sleep. I took my phone and went into the bathroom.
My eyes, which had regained their sight, were still a little unaccustomed to the light.
I tremblingly scrolled through my phone and discovered that Vivian had sent me countless messages.
They were all selfies of her and Ethan in bed.
Ethan, always so proud, willingly became her puppy.
He allowed her to leave hickeys on his neck.
He also allowed her to leave lipstick marks on his white shirt.
But I clearly remembered that when I accidentally got a little dirt on his clothes, he gave me the cold shoulder for three whole days!
My tears fell silently.
The more I scrolled, the more painful the photos became.
One of them was a video.
After clicking on it, she and Ethan were kissing passionately, Ethan's hand roaming over her body.
Her clingy voice rang out, "Ethan, what about your little girlfriend? Do you love me or her?"
Ethan's voice, thick with desire, coaxed her.
"Vivian, you're the only one I'll ever love. She's just a toy for my needs. Now I've given her to my brother."
Satisfied with his answer, Vivian giggled. The next second, Ethan smiled and knelt down.
Seeing these videos, my body went cold.
Finally, she triumphantly declared: "Sarah, the one who isn't loved is the third wheel. You're out."
I silently watched these messages, suddenly understanding.
The first time I met Ethan...
He saved me from almost being hit by a car.
His hand was bleeding, but he gently asked if I was okay.
From then on, we often ran into each other in different places.
I came from a poor family and worked several part-time jobs to make ends meet.
Knowing I was afraid of the dark, he always picked me up from work and chased away any creeps.
He said, Sarah, I love you very much, you are pure and innocent, and deserve to be cherished.
Naturally, we got together.
But today, he said my purity was my sin, and sleeping with a stranger every night was my punishment.
Only now did I know that his love at first sight was just an excuse.
The real reason was my resemblance to her.
Crying and crying, I suddenly ran out of tears.
After a sleepless night, my eyes were red and swollen, and I had made up my mind.
Fake Ethan woke up sometime during the night.
He naturally pulled me into his arms, sleepy-eyed and gentle.
"Why are you up so early?"
I clung to this brief tenderness.
"I couldn't sleep. I was thinking about the past."
He reached out and wiped away my tears, his clumsy movements betraying his distress.
"Don't think about the past, think about the future. I'll always be with you."
I hummed in agreement.
He hesitated, but finally said, "Let's celebrate your birthday at home tonight. I have a present for you."
My favorite strawberry cake, a bouquet of 999 strawberry blossoms.
Even though I couldn't see, he still decorated a beautiful birthday setting for me.
Watching him excitedly preparing for my birthday, I couldn't help but tear up.
If the one I liked had been him from the beginning, would I not be so sad?
Just as we were about to blow out the candles, I saw him carefully leave his seat.
"Wait, there's another present."
He opened the door, and Ethan at the doorway reluctantly walked up to me.
I froze, not expecting him to come.
I clearly saw him holding a large hamburger cake.
"I remember you always wanted a special cake. I specially ordered this for you."
He sat down and pulled me to feel it.
"Let's blow out the candles!"
I had finally convinced myself to leave, but his actions softened my heart.
He cared about me.
I blushed and blew out the candles with him, making a wish for many happy years to come.
The man outside the door sighed and left.
Ethan was exceptionally gentle tonight, as if the hurt he had caused me wasn't his doing.
I was about to drown in the tenderness he gave me.
But then he suddenly touched my thigh, his hand slowly exploring further.
I immediately came back to my senses, biting my lip and shaking my head. "Don't do this."
He looked displeased, but continued to pretend.
"Sarah, it's been a while since we've..."
He became more daring.
I covered my stomach, my eyes instantly reddening.
"I'm pregnant, have you forgotten?"
Hearing these words, his face immediately fell, and he released me.
My newly warmed heart turned cold again.
So he came here specifically to humiliate me?
Was I just a tool for him to satisfy his desires?
I gave a bitter smile.
He got up, gritted his teeth and walked out, stopping at the door, his voice cold.
"Andrew, don't blame me for being heartless. If you hadn't begged me to come back, I wouldn't have!"
"She really thinks she's something special. How disappointing! Don't forget to take her to the courthouse tomorrow!"
I stood there frozen, tears silently falling.
Andrew didn't reply, closed the door, walked in, and apologized with a smile.
"I'm sorry, Sarah, it's my fault. If you don't want to, I won't force you. Don't cry."
He reached out, and I instinctively backed away.
Looking at the two brothers working together, I really wanted to laugh.
"I'll take you somewhere to relax tomorrow, Sarah. You need to be happy."
He tried to pull me into his arms, but I dodged.
Andrew sighed dejectedly, but didn't say anything. "Go to sleep early."
I silently looked out the window, my tears already dried.
Vivian's message came again.
This time, it was a photo of her and Ethan holding hands, the ring on her finger silently flaunting their relationship.
I remember I had thought about marrying Ethan.
But Ethan had said he was still young and wanted to focus on his career, saying relationships would only hold him back.
I remained silent and never mentioned it again.
But now, seeing his bright smile, I realized that he wanted to get married, but not to me.
Early the next morning, I sent Andrew away, saying I wanted to eat buns from South Street.
Andrew almost always indulged me.
If it weren't for Ethan, I think I might have fallen for him.
He affectionately rubbed my head. "Seeing you like that yesterday, I thought you hated me. I'll go buy them for you now."
"Can you go by yourself later? I'm still worried."
I forced a smile. "Of course I can. Do you think I'm a three-year-old? I'll take a cab."
After repeatedly confirming that I could go alone, he finally left with peace of mind.
I got up and looked around the house I had lived in for nearly four years, my throat choking up.
Everything should end.
Let this wrong relationship disappear.
I packed my things and contacted a moving company. I had been looking for a new place ever since my sight returned.
The weather in Arizona is nice, and there are many flowers I love.
I think it would be a good place.
I made an appointment with the OB/GYN there and went out.
Just then, Andrew called again to urge me: "Sarah, are you in the car yet? Be careful, I'm already on my way there."
He was very clever. The location he gave me was a park near the courthouse.
My voice was soft: "Yes, I'm leaving soon."
Hearing my words, he obviously relaxed.
"Then hurry up."
After hanging up the phone, I saw Vivian's social media post.
"The groom looks so handsome today. He said he's finally going to marry me!"
In the photo, he was devoutly kissing her hand.
Vivian's message came again.
"The stand-in story should end, Sarah. Actually, you're quite pitiful, but I won't sympathize with you, because your part is over."
I didn't reply, silently blocking her contact.
Before boarding the plane, Andrew's calls kept coming in.
"Andrew, thank you for weaving me a beautiful dream."
I silently found Ethan's number and wished him happiness.
After doing all this, I blocked everyone's contact and turned on airplane mode.
Doing these things, I felt a rare sense of ease.
At the courthouse, Andrew received the news and his mind went blank. When did she find out his true identity?
Ethan and Vivian arrived late, a bad feeling welling up in his heart when he received the news of Sarah's birthday.
They waited patiently for half an hour.
Andrew's face was pale, and a ridiculous thought popped into his head, his lips trembling.
"Ethan, this is bad, Sarah seems to have discovered something, she's missing!"
