Sienna's first love lost his memory. He thought he was still twenty, back in the years when they were head over heels for each other.

She felt so sorry for him that she pretended to be twenty again, spending every day by his side. My daughter and I were forced to live in the shadows, hiding so he wouldn't find out we existed.

"Just hold on a little longer," she told me. "I'll tell him everything at our daughter's third birthday party."

But at the party, her first love couldn't handle the truth. He pulled a knife, threatening to end it all. She rushed to him, sobbing, promising she'd never leave him.

Then, she looked at me and said the party was postponed. But there would be no other day.

She didn't realize that the careless shove she gave our daughter triggered her heart condition. My little girl died that very night.

1.

"Sienna, you said I was the only one you ever loved. When did you get a husband and a kid?"

Garret looked at Sienna and me with eyes full of agony. He pointed at our three-year-old daughter, Lily.

Sienna looked incredibly guilty. "Garret, the truth is, you lost your memory. We aren't twenty anymore, and we broke up a long time ago."

"No way!" Garret's voice cracked as his eyes turned bloodshot. "We haven't even graduated college yet. Just yesterday, you told me you'd marry me right after graduation."

"Garret, you're sick. You really don't remember," Sienna said, sounding helpless.

Suddenly, Garret grabbed a steak knife from the table. "Lies! All of it!"

"If this is real, then I'd rather just die right now!" He screamed, raising the blade.

"No! Garret, stop!" Sienna lunged forward and threw her arms around him. Tears were streaming down her face.

"You didn't lose your memory, okay? I was just joking. Please, put the knife down." Under her frantic soothing, Garret slowly lowered the weapon.

"You were really just kidding?" He whispered.

"Yes, I swear. These people... they're just actors I hired to pull a prank on you," she lied.

Actors? I almost let out a hysterical laugh.

We had agreed weeks ago that today was the day. She was supposed to tell him the truth and finally draw a line between them.

But when it mattered most, she folded. She chose him over her own family.

"Then let's go home," Garret said, looking pathetic. "I don't want to be here. Looking at that man and that kid makes me sick."

He could insult me all he wanted, but he wasn't going to talk about Lily like that. I stepped forward, ready to knock him out, but Sienna shoved me back.

"Get lost!" she hissed at me. Then, she turned back to Garret with a voice like honey. "Okay, let's go home right now."

She started to lead him away, completely forgetting it was Lily's birthday. Our friends and family were all staring, whispering in shock.

"Sienna! Did you forget what you promised me?" I shouted after her.

"Mommy, please don't go. It's my birthday," Lily sobbed, her little voice trembling.

Sienna had spent every waking moment with Garret lately. She barely ever saw Lily or me.

Lily was such a good, patient girl. She never threw tantrums, always telling herself that Mommy was just busy with work.

But today was her big day. I had promised her that Mommy would be here to blow out the candles.

Sienna walked over and whispered harshly in my ear, "Take Lily and leave. If you upset Garret again, I'll make you regret it!"

"Sienna, Lily and I are your family! How much more are you going to sacrifice for that guy?"

I couldn't hold it in anymore. I had been patient. I had stayed quiet when she said it was temporary. I even stayed in a hotel when she brought him to our house.

"If you walk out that door right now, Sienna, we are getting a divorce!"

Lily reached out and grabbed her mother's hand. "Mommy, don't leave Lily. I want to spend my birthday with you."

"Sienna, why are you still standing there? Are they actually your husband and daughter?" Garret asked, sounding like a wounded puppy.

Every time he made that face, Sienna's heart melted. Sure enough, she violently yanked her hand away from Lily. The force sent our daughter crashing to the floor.

"Of course not," Sienna said coldly. "Let's go home. I'll give you a massage to help you relax."

She took Garret's hand and walked out without looking back.

2.

I rushed to pick Lily up, but she was suddenly gasping for air. She clutched her chest, her face pale as she whimpered about the pain.

My heart skipped a beat. I scooped her up and sprinted toward the exit. Lily was born with a heart defect; she couldn't handle intense stress or physical shocks.

Sienna had pushed her so hard. If anything happened to my daughter, I would never forgive her.

As I reached the parking lot, I saw Sienna and Garret getting into our SUV. They were actually kissing before she started the engine.

I was seeing red, but Lily was turning blue in my arms. "Sienna! I need the car! Lily is having an attack!"

I screamed at the top of my lungs. Sienna didn't even glance my way.

"Stop faking it to get attention!" she yelled through the window. "I'm not falling for your bullshit!"

She slammed on the gas and roared away. My heart shattered. Our daughter was dying, and she thought it was a trick.

I didn't have time to chase her. I begged a relative for their keys and sped to the nearest hospital.

While the doctors were fighting to save her, I called Sienna over and over. I must have dialed her twenty times before she finally picked up.

But it wasn't her voice on the other end. It was the sound of her moaning. She was in bed with Garret.

"Sienna!" I roared into the phone. I wanted to kill them both.

Lily was in the ER, and her mother was busy getting laid by her ex. I kept screaming her name, but all I heard were the rhythmic sounds of their betrayal.

My mother couldn't take it. she grabbed my phone and smashed it against the hospital floor.

"Divorce her," my mom sobbed. "As soon as Lily is out of surgery, you leave that woman."

3.

Lily didn't make it out of surgery. The doctor came out looking defeated. He said we arrived too late.

The world went black, and I collapsed onto the cold hospital tiles. I kept thinking about the parking lot. I could have saved her if I had the car.

Sienna took the car. She delayed her own daughter's chance at life. I hated her with every fiber of my being.

I spent the whole night crying in the morgue. The next morning, I pulled myself together to arrange the funeral.

I tried to reach Sienna through every app possible. She ignored everything.

Instead, she was posting photos on her social media. She and Garret were acting like college sweetheartsDgoing to the fair, bungee jumping, eating cotton candy.

While she was laughing, Lily was lying in a cold metal box. Sienna didn't offer a single word of explanation.

If I could turn back time, I never would have agreed to this "mercy mission" for Garret. I thought I was being a supportive husband. I was just being a fool.

Three days later, Lily was buried. Sienna hadn't come home once. She hadn't even checked in.

I sat on the couch, staring at Lily's framed photo. My soul felt like it had been shredded.

My mother was next to me, weeping uncontrollably. "It's a sin. Sienna killed her own daughter on her birthday."

Suddenly, my new phone rang. It was Sienna.

"Luke, what the hell is wrong with you?" she snapped. "You're telling people Lily is dead just to make me come home? Are you even human? That's our daughter!"

"You still remember she's your daughter?" My voice was a low growl.

"I'm telling you, Sienna. Lily is gone. She died while you were busy screaming Garret's name."

The line went silent for a long time. Finally, she stammered, "I... I don't know what you heard, but I haven't done anything inappropriate with Garret."

"Stop lying to me!"

"Look, I know I didn't handle the birthday party well. But you saw Garret. He would have killed himself! Just stay hidden for a few more weeks until he's stable."

"Then we'll throw Lily a new party. I'll make it up to her. Tell her I'm sorry, or put her on the phone."

Garret's accident was three months ago. The day it happened, Sienna dropped everything to stay by his side for a week.

When she came back, she begged me to let her play along with his amnesia. She said he had no one else.

I had believed her because we had been married for seven years. I thought our bond was unbreakable.

But every ounce of trust I gave her was met with more betrayal. And now, it had cost Lily her life.

"Lily will never hear your apology," I said, looking at her sweet smile in the photo.

"You shoved her when you left. It triggered her heart. She's dead, Sienna."

My mother snatched the phone from my hand. "You better get your ass home and beg your daughter for forgiveness, or I'll kill that lover of yours myself!" She slammed the phone down.

The next morning, Sienna finally showed up. Lily had been buried for less than twenty-four hours. The living room was still filled with funeral flowers and incense.

Sienna didn't look sad. She looked pissed. She swung her designer bag and hit me across the head with it.

"How dare you make a shrine for a living child! You're sick, Luke!"

I grabbed the death certificate from the table and shoved it into her face. "You think this is a game?"

The paper fluttered to the floor. She looked down, and her eyes went wide.
