In the third year of our marriage, my wife, Sienna, got drunk and told me she wanted us to have a child.
Three months later, her wish came true.
I was at the clinic with her for a check-up when she asked me to go grab her a hot latte.
Just as I turned the corner of the hallway, I heard her voice, choked with tears, threatening her first love.
"Ian, the fact that you followed me to the hospital proves you still care, doesn't it"
"If you just say you love me, I'll end this pregnancy right now and leave with you."
Her voice was so full of desperation that I couldn't bring myself to take another step.
But once I truly let go, she was the one kneeling on the ground, begging me not to leave her.
1.
I hurried back with the latte, only to see Sienna walking toward the hospital garden, her hand intimately tucked into Ian's arm.
I followed them like a ghost, watching as they shared a kiss and an embrace.
Without realizing it, I squeezed the paper cup until it burst.
The scalding liquid soaked my shirt, the heat so intense it almost brought me to tears.
A passing pregnant woman saw my hollow expression and gently handed me a tissue.
I snapped back to reality and forced a bitter smile. "Thank you."
I always knew there was someone else in Sienna's heart, but I never realized he had never left.
I don't even remember how I managed to walk up to them.
All I remember is the look of pure shock and guilt on Sienna's face when she saw me.
As she tried to stand up, I pressed her back down and sneered.
"Don't stop on my account. I just came to tell you that I'm heading home."
Ian smirked, pulling Sienna closer and raising an eyebrow at me in a blatant challenge.
I fought the urge to swing at him and simply turned away.
In the back of my mind, I still held onto a shred of hope.
But by the time I reached the exit, Sienna hadn't even tried to follow me.
Once home, I waited until midnight, but there was no sign of her.
I couldn't take it anymore; I needed to talk to her and settle this, whether it meant divorce or something else.
I just couldn't stand this suffocating uncertainty.
But as I walked down to the driveway, I heard a faint, muffled moan.
"Sienna, don't hold back. I love the sound of your voice."
I stood hidden in the dark shadows of the trees, silently watching the SUV rock rhythmically.
I remembered the doctor's specific warning: "No physical intimacy for the first trimester."
At the time, I had looked Sienna in the eye and promised to follow the rules and stay faithful.
Sienna had only given me a fake smile in response.
I thought she was just nervous about becoming a mother, but now I realize she was laughing at my pathetic sincerity.
For three years, she had always used her health as an excuse to keep me at a distance.
Everything changed three months ago after she came home from a college reunion.
She had practically jumped me and was the one who suggested we have a baby.
I thought I was the luckiest man in the world.
Looking back, I was nothing more than a punchline.
"Sienna Sienna What's wrong Why is there so much blood"
Ian's sudden scream shattered my thoughts.
Before I could even process what was happening, my legs were already moving toward the black SUV.
In the dim light of the cabin, I saw blood pooling beneath Sienna.
She was clutching her stomach in agony, her face deathly pale.
"Ian, help me... save me... it hurts so much," she whispered, her voice like smoke.
My mind went completely blank, a loud buzzing filling my ears.
Ian reacted first, but instead of helping, he recoiled from her touch and scrambled backward.
His eyes were wide with terror as he fumbled with his belt, his hands shaking uncontrollably.
Just before Sienna could reach him, his composure collapsed.
"It wasn't my fault You're the one who seduced me" he yelled.
Then, he scrambled out of the car and fled into the night.
"Ian... don't leave... help me..."
Sweat poured down Sienna's face as she tried to crawl after him, only to fall onto the pavement.
The bleeding intensified, her eyes filled with nothing but despair.
Only after Ian had vanished into the darkness did Sienna realize I was there and beg for my help.
2.
I watched everything unfold with my own eyes.
Even in a life-or-death moment, I was still nothing more than her backup plan.
Watching her crawl toward me in agony, I swallowed my rage and picked her up, rushing her into the ER.
The doctors took one look at her and hurried her into the operating room.
The red light above the door stayed on for nearly the entire night.
I kept trying to convince myself this was all a nightmare.
But the sticky feeling on my hands and the metallic scent of blood reminded me exactly what had happened.
It was dawn when they finally wheeled Sienna out.
The doctor's gaze was heavy as he looked at me.
"The patient is stable, but we couldn't save the little one. The chances of her conceiving again are very slim."
His words were a final blow, shattering the last of my hope for the child I had longed for.
The doctor then snapped at me.
"I told you specifically yesterday to avoid intimacy. What kind of husband are you Don't you know how dangerous that is for a pregnant woman"
I looked down at my shoes, my voice barely a whisper.
"She cheated on me. There was nothing I could do."
The doctor went silent instantly, his anger replaced by shock and pity.
I followed the nurses into the recovery room and stared at Sienna's pale face.
Sienna had been the prom queen in college, with a line of guys waiting to date her.
But for some reason, she chose to chase me.
Back then, I was focused entirely on my scholarship and had no time for romance, so I rejected her repeatedly.
She didn't care; she followed me to class and sat with me at every meal.
Eventually, I couldn't help but fall for her, and within a semester, I was head over heels.
We were the couple everyone envied, constantly together and deeply in love.
My roommate used to joke, "She only likes you because you're an orphan. No mother-in-law drama for her."
I just laughed it off back then.
Now I realize my roommate was right about everything.
We went from talking about everything to having nothing left to say.
Sienna chose me precisely because I was alone in the worldDsomeone easy to control.
Ian's family had money, and his parents had forced them apart, eventually sending him abroad.
They had been out of touch for a long time.
But since that reunion, when Ian reappeared, Sienna became a different person.
She claimed she wanted a child with me, but she never stopped picking fights.
It wasn't until yesterday that I realized the baby was just a tool to prove her love to Ian.
She was willing to lose the child for her so-called true love if he just gave the word
For years, I gave her everything. I gave up grad school and a chance to study abroad for her.
And yet, I never earned a shred of her genuine care.
I don't understand. Was I really that unworthy of her love
On the bed, Sienna slowly opened her eyes.
She reached for my hand and whispered weakly, "Ethan, where's our baby"
I reflexively gripped her hand too hard, making her wince.
"Let go, that hurts."
I shoved her hand away, my eyes burning with rage.
"Do you even care about that child Do you have any idea what you did last night"
Sienna looked away, her voice defensive. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."
"Fine, have it your way."
I stood up with a cold laugh. "The baby is gone. Sienna, I want a divorce."
"Ethan, don't be ridiculous. You can't just throw around the word divorce"
She struggled to sit up, wobbling dangerously at the edge of the bed.
My heart jumped, and I took two steps toward her.
But I stopped myself just a foot away.
Sienna's hand froze in mid-air, and without anything to hold onto, she tumbled onto the floor.
She clutched her stomach and looked at me in disbelief. "Ethan Miller, is this how you treat me"
I looked at her with icy eyes and said nothing.
Her expression turned vicious in an instant.
"Fine Divorce it is Just remember, I'm the one dumping you"
"I want to see who would be blind enough to want a penniless, talentless orphan like you"
I nodded and smiled. "We'll see about that."
Before leaving, I added, "I'll get the papers to you as soon as possible."
3.
I left the hospital and went straight home.
The first thing I saw when I opened the door was the toy car I had bought for the baby.
Sweet memories attacked me again, and I leaned against the wall, gasping for air as my chest tightened.
I thought I was numb, but the warmth of our home made the pain unbearable.
I realized my subconscious still cared deeply.
This house was the only thing my parents left me, and I wasn't about to give it to Sienna.
I packed up everything I had bought for the baby and threw it all into the dumpster outside.
"Young man, these still have the tags on them. Are you sure you don't want them" a neighbor asked.
I didn't look back. "I don't want any of it."
As I walked back up, my phone rang. It was Sienna, and she sounded furious.
"Ethan, what did you say to Ian Get over here and apologize to him right now"
I frowned. "Sienna, are you out of your mind"
In the background, I heard Ian's whimpering voice.
"Sienna, it's okay. Don't blame Ethan. It's all my fault."
Sienna cooed to him softly before snapping at me again.
"Don't play dumb with me Even if we're getting a divorce, I won't let you bully Ian"
"Sienna, are you really divorcing him for me" Ian's voice rose, filled with excitement he couldn't hide.
Sienna replied shyly, "Yes. I've realized we're the ones who belong together."
I gripped my phone tight, a cold laugh bubbling in my throat.
Ian's family used to have money, but he and his father had gambled and squandered it all.
I heard his parents even divorced because of the debt.
Sienna and I had started a business after college. We weren't millionaires, but we were comfortable.
It was obvious why Ian had come crawling back to her.
Only Sienna was stupid enough to think it was fate.
"Sienna, do whatever you want with him, but leave me out of it. I'm not your third wheel."
I hung up on her for the first time in my life.
She tried calling back immediately, but I rejected it.
A second later, the texts started flooding in.
[Ethan, don't think ignoring me will make this go away]
[I can't believe I ever married someone like you. You're the biggest mistake of my life]
[You're a stain on my reputation]
My chest heaved with anger. I blocked her number and every social media account she had.
I spent the next hour packing her things and piling them in the master bedroom.
Only then did I finally feel like I could breathe.
Once I calmed down, I realized the house was full of her stuff.
We both worked, but almost all the money went to her.
The fact that I had spent it all on her willingly made me feel like an idiot.
The room started to spin, and I had to grab the doorframe to stay upright.
I dragged myself to the guest room and collapsed onto the bed.
I fell into a heavy, feverish sleep full of nightmares.
At some point, I felt something tickling my nose.
I struggled to open my eyes and saw Sienna curled up in my arms, sleeping peacefully.
I was confused and reflexively poked her cheek.
4.
"Stop it," Sienna muttered, swatting my hand away before rolling over.
I sat up, completely bewildered.
The light on my phone was blinking on the nightstand.
I checked the screen; it had been two full days since I fell asleep.
"I slept for forty-eight hours"
The noise woke Sienna up.
She rubbed her eyes and sat up, glaring at me. "Ethan, what is wrong with you I'm trying to sleep"
I looked at her, the moonlight highlighting the annoyance on her face.
I got out of bed and flipped the overhead light switch.
The room was suddenly blindingly bright.
Sienna shielded her eyes, peeking through her fingers.
"Ethan Miller" she screamed.
Sienna loved her sleep. In the past, if I had to get up, I'd crawl across the floor in the dark to avoid waking her.
I never would have dared to turn on the big light.
But today, I didn't care, and she immediately lost her temper.
I asked coldly, "Sienna, why are you in my bed"
She stared at me sharply. "You think I like this cheap mattress You piled so much junk in the master bedroom that I had nowhere else to go"
"Sienna, are you awake Dinner is ready," a man's voice called from the doorway.
My head spun. I turned around to see Ian standing there wearing an apron.
He caught my eye and gave me a playful, mocking smirk.
Sienna got out of bed and walked over to him, her gaze softening.
When she turned back to me, her voice was full of authority.
"Ian just got back and has nowhere to stay. He's crashing here for a while. This dinner is his rent."
I actually laughed out of pure rage. "He's staying in my house Did you even bother to ask me"
Sienna's face hardened. "Don't forget, Ethan, I have a right to this house too. Besides, I haven't even settled the score for the way you talked to Ian the night I lost the baby"
"What did I say" I looked at Ian, a smile playing on my lips.
Ian avoided my gaze and tugged at Sienna's sleeve.
"Sienna, you're misunderstanding him. It was my fault that night, really."
He hung his head, looking like a kicked puppy. It was a masterful performance.
I watched him silently.
Sienna didn't say a word, but she gently patted Ian's back to comfort him.
She shot me a look that was a clear warning.
It said, "Ethan, take the exit I'm giving you. If you say one more word, you'll regret it."
In the past, that look would have terrified me. I would have done anything to stop her from being mad.
But now, I just thought she was delusional for thinking she still had power over me.
"I said I want a divorce If you love your high school sweetheart so much, take him to a motel. Feed him and pamper him there. Just get him out of my sight"
Sienna sneered. "Divorce was just something I said because I was mad The company's contracts are tied to our marriage. Do you want the business to go bankrupt Besides, I have a house, why would I waste money on a hotel"
I looked at her in shock. I couldn't believe the woman I loved was this shameless.
I was suddenly glad she had rejected me when I once offered to be a stay-at-home husband.
She had called me pathetic and ambitionless back then.
But those insults saved me. I never lost my professional edge, and I still held the company's most important clients.
Sienna was the boss on paper, but she only cared about partying.
She actually believed the business was dependent on our marriage status.
She had no idea that our biggest partners only worked with us because of my talent.
I stopped arguing.
If she wanted to play games and flaunt Ian in my face, then fine. Nobody was going to have a good time.
