My husband, Val Sanchez, kept his secretary Freya Fox as his mistress, and she deliberately wrecked three of my luxury cars, each worth millions.
The first was a Lamborghini. The front end was crushed, badly deformed, and in the back seat I found a piece of lingerie Freya wore all the time.
The second was a Maybach, scratched all over, dented and battered, and from the back seat I pulled out a used contraceptive.
This was the third. The roof of the Bentley was caved in, the rear smashed, and in the back seat I found a whip smeared with something white.
I gripped that whip tight and turned toward Freya.
I raised the whip and brought it down across her. "Wrecking my car is one thing, but doing something this filthy in it too? You think this is some sleazy love-hotel?"
"Cash or card?"
Freya wailed and dodged, but she still went down under the whip.
"Mrs. Sanchez, I really didn't mean to. Why would you do this to me over a few worthless cars?"
Val shielded her, aching for her, and flung a black card in my face, snapping at me.
"What are you throwing a fit about now? Fine, I'll just buy you another one!"
It was always like this.
Whatever Freya wanted appeared in her hands the very next day. My jewelry, my properties, even my child.
I let out a cold laugh, snapped the black card in two, and swung the whip at Val with everything I had.
"Val, don't you like being whipped? Today I'll whip that filthy mouth of yours clean."
Since he was already filthy, he could be thrown out with the trash.
After ninety-nine strokes my hand had gone numb. I didn't look at the two of them cowering in the corner, terrified of me.
I dropped the whip on the ground, turned, and left, then called my father.
"Dad, I want to sue Val and Freya, and pull my investment out of Sanchez Group while I'm at it."
...
I was in the middle of a meeting at the company when I got a call from traffic police.
"Ms. Sawyer, the vehicle your husband was driving has been in an accident. He hit a tree at the roadside. Please come to the scene as soon as possible to help us handle it."
My mind went blank for a second. I paused the meeting and went straight there.
The moment I stepped out of the car, I saw the limited-edition Bentley, its whole rear sunk into the tree trunk, a branch driven through the roof.
That Bentley was a birthday present from my father.
Only three of them existed in the world. Since I'd gotten it, I hadn't touched it once.
Now it was beyond recognition.
"Ms. Sawyer, please inspect your vehicle. We'll have it towed for repair after that."
The insurance people and the traffic officer led me over to the car.
I reached for the back seat like it was second nature, and sure enough, I found a whip.
At the same time, a sound of sobbing reached my ears. It had to be Freya Fox, the little secretary Val kept.
I turned and followed the sound.
Freya's face was flushed, her body trembling faintly, and Val had her gathered in his arms with tender concern.
I tightened my grip on the whip, a flicker of cold in my eyes.
I walked toward them, whip in hand, and threw it in Freya's face.
"I remember warning you last time. Stop touching my things. Do my words go in one ear and out the other for you?"
The color drained from Freya's flushed cheeks in an instant. She picked up the whip as though she couldn't bear the humiliation, and said, pitiful and fragile,
"The young master said I could drive it. I thought you knew, Mrs. Sanchez."
Hearing her bring up my son, my heart sank all the way down.
Three months ago, Freya had also applied to be my son's private piano teacher.
During that stretch I was buried in a major project and traveling constantly.
By the time I came back, I found my son and Freya had grown closer.
He was even crying and begging her to be his mother.
A dull ache went through my chest, and then I raised my hand and slapped her hard across the face.
"Two days ago, you drove my Maybach straight off a cliff. The whole car was dented, one long scratch after another."
"Five days ago, you took my Lamborghini and tore through the streets, then drove it right into a mall. Not only was the front end wrecked, Val paid out thirty million on your account."
"To put it plainly, she's your little lover. What gives her the right to spend marital assets?"
Freya sank weakly to the ground, sobbing without stop, insisting over and over that it wasn't so.
Val gathered her against his chest, aching for her.
Then his gaze settled on me, his expression cold, his lips curling in indifference.
"Sweetheart, it's only a little money. A few cars. I'll just pay you back for them."
"Freya's still young, still at the age where she loves to play around. Why bother nitpicking with her and ruining our son's fun?"
He casually drew a black card from his wallet and tossed it in my face.
Young?
A twenty-something child?
Young enough to wreck my car on purpose, young enough to steal my child?
The cold in my eyes grew heavier as I reached out and snapped the black card in two.
This black card was a supplementary one I'd set up for Val.
Before, I liked him, and everything came second to him.
Now that he was filthy, he could be dealt with.
I picked up the whip off the ground, cracked it hard, and struck at Val.
"Every single time she just happens to wreck my car?"
"When she drives my cars, does she ever ask me?"
"A little money? Val, don't make me laugh. Which piece of clothing on your body wasn't bought with my money?"
"I indulged you far too much before. Your mouth's so filthy, let me whip it clean for you!"
I put everything into it and brought the whip down on Val.
But he caught it in one hand, the smile fading from his face.
His eyes were full of blame and disgust, and his grip tightened.
He wrenched the whip back. "Zoey, you're the Sanchez wife now, but that doesn't mean you always will be!"
"As long as you don't lose your mind, she can't threaten your position. Besides, do we really need to split what's yours and what's mine?"
Did Val actually think I cared about being the Sanchez wife?
The pull threw me off balance for a second. I lifted my eyes and looked coldly at Freya Fox.
"Fine, you wreck my car. Last time it was your underwear, the time before it was sex toys, and now it's a whip. Do you think I'm running some kink hotel?"
"Cash or card?"
Freya flinched and buried herself into Val's arms like a terrified animal, her tears soaking through his shirt.
The picture of a fragile little flower.
"I really didn't mean to. Those things just accidentally got left in the car."
"Mr. Sanchez only wanted to make sure madam had a good experience, so he tested it out with me beforehand"
I caught the flicker of smugness in her eyes and yanked her out of Val's arms.
"Tested it out? Tested it until you'd crashed three of my cars? The repairs plus damages come to tens of millions. How exactly are you going to pay that?"
Freya bit down hard on her lip, her whole body shaking as she started to sink to her knees.
The next moment Val swept her up in his arms and murmured soothing words to her.
He shot me a furious look. "What are you doing, making her kneel!"
He pulled out a blank check and threw it at me.
"Zoey Sawyer, since when did you get so vain! They're just a few cars."
"Take this check. Write in whatever amount you want. You're disgusting."
I looked down at the check where it had fallen to the floor, and the corner of my mouth curved coldly.
"What's madam laughing at? Isn't everything you spend right now coming from Mr. Sanchez's company dividends?"
"Without Mr. Sanchez, you're nothing."
Freya taunted in that soft, shrill little voice of hers.
I lifted my foot and stepped on the check, grinding my heel into it a few times.
Freya was wrong.
It was without me, Zoey Sawyer.
Val Sanchez was the one who was nothing.
If he hadn't stood in the rain for ten full hours begging to marry me back then,
why would I have ever married him?
"Val, are you sure about this?"
He glared at me as if I were the demon tearing him and Freya apart.
"Then don't come regretting the consequences."
Something like panic flickered in Val's eyes, then he covered it up.
I gave the check a kick, said a few words to the insurance company, and turned and walked away.
Once I was in the car, I called my father.
"Dad, I want to sue Val and Freya Fox, and I'm cutting off every last cent the Sanchez family spends."
My father's authoritative voice came down the line. "If you're going to act, act hard. Put Sanchez Group away for good."
I made a sound of agreement and hung up.
I drove to my son's school and waited until his classes let out.
But I watched him walk right past me and throw himself straight into Freya's arms.
Watching how close they were, my heart felt like a thousand blades were driven through it, the pain leaving me unable to breathe.
I switched to one of the sports cars and drove through the city to clear my head.
My phone rang without stopping. It was the Sanchez family.
I watched coldly as call after call came up and cut off.
By the time I got home, the whole Sanchez family was sitting in the living room with black looks on their faces.
I had barely set down my car keys when a vase came flying at me.
Val's father, his face livid, jabbed a finger at me and swore.
"You're really going to fret over one little secretary? My son isn't even divorcing you. Was there any need to make a scene and cut off the family's money?"
"I went out with my friends this afternoon to get facials and my card wouldn't go through. They were definitely laughing at me behind my back!"
Val's father and mother took turns berating me, back and forth.
And my son stood off to the side, watching coldly.
Val kissed my cheek softly and coaxed me in a gentle voice.
"Honey, you've made everyone miserable. Just turn everyone's cards back on. Whatever jewelry you've had your eye on, I'll buy it for you."
The Sanchez family's credit card statement my assistant had just sent was still sitting in my phone.
Every year I settled hundreds of millions in charges for them.
Because I loved him, I had never once complained.
And now, over a few frozen cards, they were already this desperate?
None of this had ever been Val's to begin with. When would he ever understand that?
"Doesn't your company pay you dividends? Take that out and give it to them."
I shoved him away, my face blank.
Roger slapped the table, his voice pitched high with urgency.
"That's a Sanchez company! You spending Sawyer money on us is only right and proper, isn't it?"
"Exactly, Zoey. You've worn out every last bit of this family's patience. And when the day comes, you'll be the one begging us to forgive you."
Antonia chimed in right behind him.
Funny. They had the target backward.
When that day came, they'd be the ones on their knees begging me.
I couldn't help a small scoff. I picked a shard off the floor and pressed it into Val's hand. "This vase cost eight million. Don't forget to pay for it."
Then, without sparing any of them another glance, I went upstairs to rest.
Five o'clock the next morning, someone started pounding on my bedroom door and wouldn't stop.
Everyone in this house knew I woke up in a foul mood, so they always let me sleep until I woke on my own.
I yanked the door open, half angry already, and my son grabbed my hand and started pulling me out.
"Mommy."
I looked at the child who was finally willing to come close to me, a rush of surprised warmth going through me, and let him lead me along.
The next second, I felt like I'd been dropped into ice.
"Teacher Fox wants to have a piano contest with you. If you lose, you have to turn everyone's cards back on."
By the time I reached the ground floor, the rest of them were already sitting in the living room.
And Freya was already seated on the piano bench.
She pressed a fond kiss to my son's cheek and turned to me, provocation in her eyes.
"Ma'am, I brought some breakfast I made myself."
"But I hear you cut off everyone's cards. As Mr. Sanchez's wife, how could you do such a thing?"
I glanced at the bowl of oatmeal in each of their hands, then brought my gaze back to her radiant smile, and frowned.
"Since you're so eager to hand money over, why not just wire your entire monthly salary straight into Val's father's account?"
"What kind of talk is that! Look at Freya. That's what a wife is supposed to be!"
"Not like you, out spending money everywhere every single day, a new car every morning!"
Roger dropped his bowl and glared at me, breathing hard.
Freya carried a bowl of oatmeal over to me, scooped up a spoonful, and lifted it toward my mouth.
"Ma'am, if you don't know how, I can come every day from now on and do it. I can take good care of Mr. Sanchez."
I raised my hand and knocked the spoon aside, looking down at her coldly.
"Can't wait to move in already?"
"If you want to be the Sanchez family's maid, just say so. I'll have Val put you on the payroll."
Antonia stepped forward, steadied Freya, and jabbed a finger at my face.
"Zoey Sawyer, show me one wife who's like you, never once setting foot in the kitchen, and expecting her husband to wait on her instead!"
"If my son hadn't liked you back then, I'd never have wanted a daughter-in-law as useless as you."
I raised a hand and had the servants carry the piano away, then wiped my hands with a handkerchief. "You don't want me. You'd rather Freya be your daughter-in-law? Fine. Then let her make up the hundreds of millions you people have spent all these years. I'm bringing someone in right now to settle the accounts."
"You've got some nerve, spending Sawyer money and then turning around to put me on trial."
A flicker of panic crossed Antonia's eyes. Her mouth opened, but no words came out.
My son slammed his weight against my side and glared at me with hatred.
"Mommy! Why did you take away the piano, why did you cut off the cards, why can't you learn to be gentle like Teacher Fox!"
"She picks me up from school every day and makes me little cakes, and she's prettier than you too!"
I stumbled back a few steps, my hands shaking uncontrollably, anger and helplessness rising up from somewhere deep inside me.
I stared at him for a moment before I spoke, slowly.
"All right. Then let her be your mother."
"I'm signing divorce papers with your father right now."
For a moment the living room went silent.
My son froze. His mouth opened, as if he hadn't expected me to say it.
The next instant, Val pulled me tight against him.
He steered me toward the dining room. "Zoey, he's just a kid joking around. Your stomach's bad, eat something first."
But before I could even sit down, Freya's thin, delicate voice reached my ears.
"Mr. Sanchez, I came this time to make amends to your wife."
"It's my own fault for being so careless and wrecking three of her cars."
Val's hand tightened at my waist, his gaze drifting toward Freya Fox as if it weren't quite landing on her.
"So you wrecked it, you wrecked it. As long as you're not hurt. Once your driving gets better, you'll stop crashing all the time."
Freya's eyes lit up. She trotted over to Val's side, lips in a pout.
"But I don't have a car to practice on. Why don't you lend me that Ferrari you gave your wife for your wedding anniversary? Let me practice on that."
"Ma'am, you have so many cars. Surely you wouldn't mind?"
I peeled his hand off my waist, my eyes settling coldly on her face.
"I mind. I'd rather not find something disgusting on my car again. Since you're here to make amends, Freya, I assume you brought enough money today?"
"I've already filed the lawsuit. If you won't pay me, take it up with the judge."
I spread jam over my toast, unhurried.
The next second Val snatched the spreading knife from me and eagerly layered on the avocado.
"Zoey, we're family. Talking money spoils the feeling. I'll pay you back for all of it later. I remember this is your favorite combination. Eat first."
But Roger's face had gone dark, and he let out a heavy snort.
"The Sanchez family is no worse than your Sawyers! I don't know how your parents raised you, money coming out of your mouth every time you open it. So petty!"
"My son's company is already one of the top five hundred in the world. Even without you, the Sanchezs would still sit at the head of high society."
Antonia dropped her spoon too, her tone smug.
"Someday it might be you bowing and waiting on us. I don't want your card anyway. This afternoon I'll spend my son's black card!"
I didn't take the bread from Val. Nausea rose up my throat.
I threw the fork in my hand to the floor and let my gaze move inch by inch over every person there.
Without me, they couldn't get so much as a hand on the front gate of this villa.
They had nothing to put them in high society at all.
When would they ever realize their son was worthless.
"Fine. Then pay off every last expense within three days."
"Oh, and I'm about to divorce Val. You'll all move out within the week. Today I'm having dinner at my father's."
Ignoring the curses behind me, the moment I left the house I called my lawyer friend.
"I need you to dig into Val's secretary, Freya Fox. Pull up everything on her. And the joint accounts of both companies."
I hadn't forgotten the flash of victory and secret glee in Freya's eyes before I walked out.
Her goal from the start had been the position of Mrs. Sanchez.
She was too greedy for a shortcut, too eager to climb.
And Val was clearly enjoying it, savoring the thrill of eating from his bowl while eyeing the pot.
Truly sickening.
I let out a scoffing laugh, flicked on my turn signal, and drove toward my father's house.
Just as my father and I were going over the evidence I'd dug up on the Sanchezs, a message came through on my phone.
Val had diverted twenty million from the project funds of the joint venture with the Sawyers and spent it at the car dealership.
I immediately started checking the project's books, and sure enough the numbers didn't add up.
The next moment another photo and a line of text popped up on my phone.
In the photo, Freya sat in the driver's seat of a Ferrari, leaning down to kiss Val, both their faces flushed.
"Ma'am, one little cry from me and he bought me a car just like yours. He even said I could crash it all I want."
"Ma'am, the young master also agreed to transfer all your cars into my name."
I screenshotted every bit of it and sent it to the lawyer and my father, then picked up the pen in my hand and signed the divorce petition.
"Dad, it was a joint project with the Sawyers, after all. They'll spit every cent of it back up."
"I'm going out for a bit."
My father waved a hand and sent the Sawyer family's best bodyguards to follow behind me.
"I'll wait for you to come back."
By the time I reached Sanchez Group, Val's hands were roaming over Freya's body, the two of them moaning through the office.
The moment Val saw me, he let go of Freya.
Freya, on the other hand, was thrilled. She held up the car key and waved it in front of my eyes.
The panic on Val's face had already been replaced by entitlement.
"Zoey, the girl wanted it, so I had to buy it for her. You have one too. Don't be jealous."
Freya thumped a fist against his chest. "Who says they're the same? Mine's more expensive than hers!"
"If ma'am here had known her place, sir wouldn't have had to buy me a new one."
I raised an eyebrow, waited until they'd finished their little act, then slowly lifted my hand and slapped her across the face.
Before she could react, the bodyguards had pinned me hard to the floor.
