My wife had suffered from severe insomnia for half a year.
I combed the whole city for the best doctors, asking for nothing but one good night's sleep for her.
So I wouldn't disturb her rest, I moved into the guest room on my own.
Then, at three in the morning, my phone refreshed a page by accident.
And I saw my wife, the one who was supposedly "already asleep," sitting in a livestream, sending a sleep-aid male streamer three top-tier virtual gifts in a row.
A moment later, from the master bedroom came moans that made my face heat and my heart pound.
1.
The sound of my wife, Adeline Pruitt, talking with the male streamer on their live call drifted out.
"Thank you for the gifts, Addie. Tonight I'll do anything you want."
Adeline's tone turned playful.
"Really? I want to have a baby with you. Do you agree?"
The man teased back.
"If we handle the making and your husband handles the raising, that could work."
Adeline laughed out loud.
"You're too much. So much better than that block of wood."
Then the man spoke.
"Addie, tonight's the night for that special session. Your husband's home. It'd be bad if he caught you. Or should we switch to something else?"
Adeline gave a cold little laugh.
"Him?"
"When he was chasing me he acted like a lapdog. Even if he heard, he wouldn't dare do a thing."
"In that case, then I'm going to start."
And then a sound too shameful to describe began.
Adeline, meanwhile, was beside herself with excitement.
"Kevin, your voice is so good. Big sis will tip you again."
Kevin Henson sounded thrilled.
"Wow, thank you for the gift!"
"Such a shame, though. Your husband's home today, so we can't do our weekly up-close time."
At the same time, I saw the balance in our joint savings account drop by three thousand dollars.
From what they'd just said, it was clear.
Adeline hadn't only tipped this streamer over and over online.
She often ordered these special sessions too.
She'd even met him privately for so-called "up-close time."
Before, when she tipped, the joint account had never moved. She'd probably been using her own private account the whole time.
This time she was likely too worked up, and pulled the money straight out of the joint account without a second thought.
Cold spread through me.
Half a year ago, when the company sent me abroad on assignment.
I hadn't wanted Adeline to be lonely, so I meant to bring her with me.
But she chose to stay behind, saying she wanted to take care of my mother for me.
Maybe that was already when she'd fallen for this sleep-aid streamer.
Three years married to Adeline.
Back then, all because she once said she wanted to watch me build a future for her bit by bit.
I handed the hundred-billion conglomerate my grandfather left me over to my people to run, without a moment's hesitation.
And I started from nothing myself, telling her about every small step forward each day.
All I wanted was to see happiness in her eyes.
And she, just as I'd hoped, would dissolve into tears every time I came home, saying she was the happiest woman alive.
I'd sunk into all of it.
Never knowing her heart had betrayed me long ago.
Since she didn't cherish what we had.
Then I didn't need to keep playing out this bitter little drama with her either.
I turned and called my right-hand man.
"I'm coming back to Wilshire. Get things ready."
His voice went electric.
"Kent Dickerson, you're finally willing to come back. Everyone's been waiting so long."
I nodded.
"Keep my return quiet for now."
"Handle one thing for me first. Look into a streamer named Kevin Henson."
"Acquire the platform he's on, as fast as you can."
He answered "Yes," and I hung up.
Just then, the master bedroom door stirred.
Adeline came out.
When she saw me, guilt flickered across her face.
But she covered it at once, and her expression softened into a gentle smile.
"Honey, why aren't you asleep yet?"
I said flatly,
"I saw three thousand dollars go out of the joint account."
She paused, then glanced at her phone.
"Oh, my friend had her eye on a bag."
"She was short on cash, so I lent her some. I tapped the wrong account by mistake when I sent it."
"Is that so."
My voice was neither warm nor cold.
Adeline shot me a look.
"Kent, you don't not believe me, do you?"
"We've been married more than three years. When have I ever lied to you?"
When had she ever lied to me?
I found it almost funny.
I wanted to confront her, but I held it back.
Because now wasn't the time.
On the surface I stayed calm.
"I was only asking. I was worried you didn't have enough to spend."
The smile returned to her face.
"That's more like it."
"All right, honey, go to sleep. You've got work tomorrow."
Then she kissed my forehead.
After that she turned and walked into the bedroom.
The door shut with a bang.
The next morning I was making breakfast.
The door to the master bedroom opened without warning.
Adeline always got up around eight or nine. Today was early for her.
"Why not sleep a little longer?"
I asked it flatly.
She rubbed her eyes.
"I'm meeting my girlfriends today. If I leave late, we'll be stuck in line forever."
"Hurry up with the food."
Then she sat down off to the side.
I caught a glimpse of her texting Kevin.
"Kevin, I haven't gotten my period for two months now. Don't tell me I'm actually pregnant?"
He wrote back: "Then have it."
"But money's tight for me right now. Once it's confirmed, I'll say it's your husband's and let him cover the costs first."
"Mm, either way he won't suspect a thing."
"I'll go get checked today. It's about the right time for an amniocentesis test now."
"I'll let you know once it's confirmed."
I laughed coldly to myself.
I hadn't imagined the two of them had already gotten this far.
I went into the kitchen.
Carried the breakfast out.
Adeline ate a few careless bites, then flashed me a smile and waved.
"I'm off, honey."
"For our future, you'd better work hard, okay?"
There'd been a time when that would have made me feel happy, full of drive.
But right then, all I felt was disgust.
Watching the direction she'd gone, I flagged down a cab and followed.
In the end it stopped at a women's clinic.
I'd barely stepped out when my right-hand man called.
"Kent, I've got it sorted. This Kevin Henson is a hot streamer on WarmGlow TV."
"Trades on his looks and a sweet mouth, and he's pulled in a huge crowd of female fans."
WarmGlow TV?
Never heard of it.
Didn't matter.
"How long for the acquisition?"
I asked.
He answered:
"Within two days."
The call ended.
I walked into a coffee shop.
Two hours later, Adeline came out of the clinic.
Smiling, she took out her phone and called Kevin.
I couldn't make out what she said.
But I could guess.
I sent my man a message.
"Send someone to the women's clinic and pull all of Adeline's test reports."
That evening I timed my return for right at quitting hour.
The moment I was through the door.
Adeline threw herself happily into my arms and pushed a pregnancy report at me.
"Honey, I've got good news for you."
"What?"
"I'm pregnant!"
She giggled.
"Six weeks along. Surprised? Didn't see it coming?"
She'd forgotten she hadn't let me touch her in three months.
The timeline didn't add up.
I didn't call her out on it.
I gave a faint smile and gently pushed her back.
"In that case, I'll just have to work even harder."
"All right, I'm going to get some work done."
With that, my face cooled and I left her standing there, walking into the study.
She froze for a moment.
But she didn't think much of it.
"Then work hard. Do it for our baby."
I didn't turn around.
Afraid I wouldn't hold back and would rid her of the child in her belly with my own hands.
In the study, I sat there until midnight.
Then I logged into Kevin's stream on a burner account.
Right now, Kevin was doing his sleep-aid session for his fans.
With some interaction too.
Plenty of the female fans were swooning, saying how handsome and gentle he was, that they wanted to have his baby.
Adeline was among them, logged in on her main account.
She sent a top-tier gift straightaway.
"No need to fight over him. I'm already carrying Kevin's baby~"
"If you love Kevin, you have to send him gifts, you know."
And with that, she sent another top-tier gift.
After that, she flirted with Kevin as if no one else was there.
Finally, someone said they'd seen from Adeline's posts that she was already married.
She tagged that person and replied:
"If your husband has zero sense of romance and you still have to fake being happy every day, doesn't it get boring?"
"A woman's only happy with someone who understands her."
The stream was packed with mindless fans, and they chimed in agreeing one after another.
Watching all this, I let out a cold laugh.
Then took a screenshot.
Adeline.
Since you think he understands you.
Then when I lay my cards on the table, don't you dare cry.
An hour later, Kevin spoke up with a smile.
"Alright, everyone, next up is my top-tier sister's private wind-down time. See you all tomorrow~"
Then I was kicked out of the stream.
And the top tipper, of course, was Adeline.
I had no interest in hearing anything more they had to say.
I just forwarded the screenshots to my legal team.
Early the next morning I went to Wilshire and sat through the routine reports from the heads of each department.
On my way out, my right-hand man walked me to the door.
As we passed a Western restaurant,
I glanced at him.
"Come in and sit with me for a bit."
We'd barely gotten inside and settled at a two-top by the window.
Then a familiar figure walked in.
It was Kevin.
He sat down with a few friends at the best table in the place, all smiles.
"Everyone, it's on me today. Order whatever you want."
Someone ribbed him.
"Look at you. Your top-tipper sister covering this again?"
"Don't tell me some rich lady's keeping you."
"Hahaha!"
Kevin laughed.
"Rich lady, please. Every cent of it is her husband's money."
"And here's a little secret for you. She's carrying my kid, too. Already ran the paternity test."
The others gave him a thumbs-up on the spot.
"Not only are you spending her husband's money, he's got to raise your kid for you."
"You're the man!"
"So she must be gorgeous, right?"
"Obviously. A fan of Kevin's, how could she be ugly?"
Kevin looked thoroughly pleased with himself.
"Relax. You'll get to see her in person in a bit."
Catching the darkness in my eyes, my right-hand man's face filled with rage.
"Kent, let me go teach them a lesson!"
I held him back and glanced at where we were sitting.
Our table and Kevin's were separated by a railing down the middle, and you could only see the other side through the gaps.
Unless you looked carefully, you couldn't see at all.
Which was exactly what I wanted.
I took a sip of red wine.
"No rush."
My man was anxious.
"Kent, back when you led the brothers, you were never..."
I looked up.
A cold light in my eyes, a faint sneer.
"Never this soft, is that it?"
He said nothing.
I went on.
"Then you remember, don't you? Anyone who crossed me, did I ever just let it slide?"
He froze, a flash of fear crossing his face, and stopped talking.
Just then, Adeline appeared.
Today she wore an elegant fitted dress full of allure, her face done up with delicate makeup.
A look I had never seen on her.
Once, I'd wanted to see her wear one, and she'd said she thought it was tacky.
Now Adeline walked over to Kevin and sat down pressed right against him.
Kevin slid his arm around her waist like it was nothing.
The others were green with envy.
Kevin looked at her.
"Addie, your husband doesn't know you're here, does he?"
Distaste flickered across Adeline's face, and she shook her head.
"He went off to work first thing this morning. Said he was going to work hard and surprise me."
"If he didn't make so much money, if I didn't need him to raise our kid, I'd have divorced him already."
The others teased her, calling me a cuckold.
But they didn't know,
from the moment Adeline sat down, I'd already started recording.
Through the gap in the railing, I got all of it, crystal clear.
Especially the part where they egged Kevin and Adeline on to kiss.
That night, my man told me the acquisition of WarmGlow TV was done.
I sent a message:
"Go over tomorrow. Bring the lawyers."
By the time I got home, Adeline had food waiting for me.
"Honey, I went out with the girls today. Didn't want it to go to waste, so I brought back what we couldn't finish."
"See? I know how to run a household, don't I?"
I looked at the table.
I recognized it at a glance.
It was the leftovers from Kevin and the rest of them that afternoon.
Whatever hunger I'd had turned to nausea.
I bolted into the bathroom and gagged.
Adeline rushed in right behind me, all worry.
"Honey, what's wrong? Are you overworked?"
She gently wiped my mouth.
I looked at her, remembering the things she'd said about me in front of Kevin.
Hard to imagine that the gentle woman on the surface loathed me that much behind my back.
An anger I couldn't name churned in my chest.
"Get away from me!"
I shoved her hard.
She nearly fell.
Once she steadied herself, her face turned furious.
"Kent, are you sick in the head?!"
"What did you push me for? If something happens to the baby, I'm not letting this go!"
I stared at her, my gaze hard.
"Adeline, what's that sound coming from your room lately?"
"You're not having trouble sleeping, are you?"
"Who are you talking to."
I wanted to see how she'd react, so I could kill off the last of my hope.
At my words, a flicker of guilt crossed her face.
But in an instant, she was righteous again.
"And whose fault is that? All you do is work, day in and day out, never any time for me!"
"I'm carrying your baby, I'm in a bad mood, and I can't even chat with someone?"
"You just about hurt the baby in my belly, and I haven't even settled that score with you!"
I let out a cold laugh and was about to speak when a message came through on her phone.
"Addie, couples' stream battle tomorrow. Come give me a hand, help hold down the room."
Adeline broke into a smile and fired back:
"Don't worry. I'll wear the same outfit as today."
Then she shot me an icy look.
"The only thing you're worth is scraping together that little bit of money."
"I've got things to do tomorrow. I'm going to bed."
She shut the door and locked it from the inside.
Early the next morning, she left the house.
And I, later on, made my way to the WarmGlow TV studio.
The moment I walked in, I ran straight into Adeline and Kevin celebrating their battle win.
The crowd was egging them on as they kissed, deep and long.
Through the crowd, Adeline saw me.
Panic flashed across her face, and she quickly pushed Kevin away.
Kevin followed her gaze and turned his head.
When he saw me, he understood something.
He gave me an amused smile and said to her:
"Addie, this your husband?"
"Didn't think he'd actually find out."
"But that's fine. I'm sick of sneaking around anyway. I'm WarmGlow's number one streamer. I make more than enough to support you and our baby."
At that, Adeline settled down, nodded, and walked over, her tone nasty.
"Kent, are you following me?"
I looked at her coldly.
"Not following you. Throwing you out with nothing."
Kevin sneered, swaggered over, and grabbed my collar.
"Who do you think you are? This is my turf."
"Kowtow to Addie and apologize, then sign everything you own over to her."
"I know more people than you've had hot meals. Believe me, I can have you killed."
He leaned in, sneering.
"Idiot. You had it good playing the sap who cleans up other men's messes. Why come here to get yourself killed?"
My man shoved him off.
"You piece of trash, who do you think you're putting your hands on? Do you know who Kent is?!"
Kevin scoffed.
"Who is he? Just another cuckold."
The whole room burst out laughing.
I ignored them and looked at Adeline.
"I'm giving you one last chance. Sign the agreement, or you'll learn what happens to people who betray me."
Kevin snatched the agreement, tore it up, and threw the pieces over my head.
He jabbed a finger at my nose. "The hell you threatening, huh!"
Then he swung his arm out.
"Boys, this idiot's got the nerve to come act up in our house. Today he walks in standing up and goes out flat on his back!"
At that, the crowd closed in around me.
And right then the head of WarmGlow TV finally showed up, shoving through the crowd to my side, pale with terror, cold sweat pouring down. "Mr. Dickerson, why didn't you tell me you were coming? I'd have had a proper welcome ready."
Then he turned to the crowd:
"What do you all think you're doing? This is the new owner of the platform. Anyone who doesn't show respect can get out!"
The crowd stared in disbelief, every one of them shrinking back.
I walked up to Kevin.
"Now say it again. Whose turf is this?"
