[ LIANAS POV ]

At my son's first birthday party, a group of men disrupted the celebration and kidnapped me and my son to an abandoned warehouse.

I suspected it was the handiwork of one of my husband's jealous business rivals trying to throw him off balance and make him lose an upcoming competition.

They tied me to a chair and made me watch while screaming in agony as they cut my son's little body with a machete piece by piece as if they were planning to sell him in parts.

I cried blood when they made me hold a piece of him. They were about to take a photo when the gate crashed open.

A group of armed soldiers stormed in, firing shots everywhere. My husbandZanewas behind them, yelling my name at the top of his voice.

He rescued me with a private helicopter, but I collapsed with shock before we got to the hospital.

A few weeks passed before I barely recovered from everything, and was discharged from the hospital.

I woke up early in the morning in our bedroom but couldn't find my husband beside me on the bed.

I made my way downstairs, but froze halfway when I overheard my husband's conversation with his brother coming from the living room and I almost collapsed with shock again.

...Bro, I'm amazed you could go so far as to kill your own son and render your wife childless. It's too much. Ethan said.

My chest took a hard blow. I gasped quietly, gripping the handrail to hold myself in place.

I looked around with barely opened eyes. This had to be a dream. I had collapsed from the shock of what happened so maybe I was still in shock and imagining things that werent real.

But Ethan continued to speak and knocked me off the little balance I had left. I bent quietly to my knees, my eyes fixed on their backs.

I was in shock when you stormed in with those soldiers since you said it was going to be a small operation. I almost thought I was getting arrested for real.

I inhaled heavily, beads of sweat dropping from my forehead.

Why would I arrest you for something we both planned out, Ethan? I would never betray you like that. We had to storm in that way to make it seem more convincing to Liana so she wouldn't see a chance to doubt me saving her from those men.

The love of my life will be returning to the country soon with our son. Liana's son had to go so there would be peace. You know Selena's son has always been the heir to my empire. Zane was grinning as he said.

I blinked uncontrollably holding back tears, and my breath caught in my throat.

How could he? He took the life of our dear son for his ex-wife. The same woman who ran off after stealing half of his fortune.

I took a step back, meaning to run back to the bedroom, but they still weren't done talking, and I couldn't help but stay back, even though it felt like my heart was already slowly dropping to the pit of my stomach.

Well, you finally got what you wanted. The only reason you had a son with Liana in the first place was to use him as a spare parts baby to provide a bone marrow you could harvest for you and Selena's son. But why did you have to take Liana's worm out too? She thought she was just at the hospital to rest. Ethan whispered.

My body trembled as if I had just been thrown into ice water. I stayed frozen, remembering why I had woken up feeling strangely hollow a few days ago at the hospital.

You know Selena and I are the real deal. I couldn't just stand by and watch our precious son die of leukemia. Selena was having some fertility issues, too, so we had to harvest Liana's worm for her. I believe it was the right thing to do Selena is the only one I want to have babies with anyway, not Liana. Zane spat without emotion.

No. This can't be real. This had to be a dream a nightmare. My chest was burning. I covered my mouth with both hands to stop the crying building in my throat.

I wanted to storm towards Zane and confront him but instead, I quietly turned away and made my way back to the bedroom.

I climbed back on the bed, my head heavy with thoughts.

The same man who used to make me feel safe was now making me feel stupid.

I flinched when I heard their voices.

I just think you could have done this a whole different way, Zane. Killing Liana's son in such an inhumane way should never have been an option at all. What if she finds out it was your doing? How are you going to handle the consequences?! Zane asked.

I held my breath and dragged the duvet over my head. It was hot and I almost couldn't breathe but the feeling of having lost my precious baby to such cruelty was heavier than that.

Dont be such a weakling, Ethan. There are no consequences. Youve been there from the start. You, of all people, know just how much I love Selena. She did what she did and ran off only because she was scared, nothing more. I don't even mind, she is still my forever love. Liana means nothing to me, so even if she finds out I don't fucking care. She loves me like a mad fool, she wouldn't even be able to do anything. Zane growled.

Take it easy before she hears us. Ethan snarled gently.

That can't happen. She is heavily medicated right now. They gave her something to knock her out for a few more days. Zane said.

I sat up at the sound of their footsteps heading back down. Selena and my son need me now. I have to be with them.

I kept my eyes squeezed shut, feeling my head pounding with a headache.

I wrapped my arms around myself, struggling to keep my tears in. They took my innocent little boy from me. The tears finally dropped when I remembered how they were cutting his body like pieces of meat.

And it was all Zane's doing? All for the sake of his first love. I should have left when I had the chance to. But I stayed only for it to cost the life of my son and be used.

Zane planned all of this out. All along, he had only thought of our son as a spare part he couldn't wait to harvest for his other beloved son. And me too he took my womb and gave it to her! How could he do such a thing to me?!

I've done nothing wrong to him except love him wholeheartedly but he was breaking and betraying me like this for the same woman who stole from him and almost drowned him in debts if I hadn't stepped in and cleaned up his mess when no one else wouldI had poured my entire fortune into saving him.

Zane was right. I really did love him like a mad fool. But that didn't mean I would keep being one after all these.

I reached for my phone and replied to the one text message I hadn't replied to in four years.

My phone lit up with an incoming call almost immediately.

My possession, you have no idea how long I've waited to hear from you. His voice slid through the speaker, warm and familiar.

[ LIANA'S POV ]

I held my breath as I said. Ill give you what you want but only if you do something for me first.

His low, amused laugh rumbled through the line. Thats fine by me, baby. I'm glad you've come back to me. Just say the word, love. Anything you need.

I clenched my hand in a tight fist, trying to slow down my heavy breathing and the warning in my head that I was about to get into something I might never be able to get out of.

Zane Maddox. Make him lose everything, including his company. I want you to make him go back to the wretched state he was in before I married him. And thenyou can have me like you want.

Mmm, you know I live for that. I've already got the keys. Should I come get you now?

Not now. In a week There are still some things I really need to do. I will call you then. I said and ended the call.

A week. That was all the time I was giving myself to tidy up things here and walk out forever. Then they will each taste the wrath of what they did to me.

It was almost 5 am but Zane still wasn't back after he left to go be with Selena and his son.

I lay on the cold tiled floor, shaking, bleeding inside and out. My womb was gone, and the image of my baby being cut apart kept playing on repeat in my head.

How could I live with this? Since I was home alone anyway, I could just jump off the balcony and free myself from this pain right this instant but I couldn't.

I had to push through. How else would I get the justice my son and I deserve?

The next morning, I had cried so much that I couldn't even feel my face anymore.

Soon, the family doctor arrived with two nurses to attend to me while Zane was still nowhere to be found. He hadn't even called.

When are you going to stop coming here? I asked the doctor before he could say a word. I kept my eyes away. That man had taken my womb.

Mr. Maddox asked to tend to you until you are well. He replied.

I sat up. I'm well now. You can leave.

The doctor looked flustered. He left with his two nurses a few minutes later.

After they had left, I got dressed and headed straight to a lawyer's office. I'm here to end my marriage.

You've taken the hardest step. Let's get the ball rolling right away. I can have everything processed within twenty-four hours.

After I left the lawyer's office, I decided to walk back home to clear my mind. I was almost halfway when my driver pulled up beside me.

He stepped out of the car and opened the door for me. A big smile on his face. Get in, Mrs. Maddox, your husband is home and he has a surprise for you.

How could he smile when he had assisted Zane with his evil deeds? Now he was smiling at me trying to hide what he had done.

Maybe Zane had forced him to drive the van that kidnapped me and my son that day. Maybe he had no choice but to be loyal to his boss but I still couldn't help but feel betrayed.

I nodded heavily and got into the car without a word.

Soon, we arrived at the mansion but I stayed still in the car for a few more minutes. I didn't want to go into the home I had been living in for three years with Zane.

Even after I got out of the car, I stood at the door for a few more minutes. I was about to push it open when it suddenly opened from the other side.

My eyes rested on a little boy holding the door open before it moved to the dining area where my Mother-In-Law was affectionately holding the hands of Selena, while looking at her so tenderly.

Selena had a luxurious flowery dress on and a smile on her face. Beside her was her one-year-old son, snug in a baby carrier, fast asleep.

That was the boy my little son's life was sacrificed for. I squeezed my eyes shut, holding back tears.

Selena glanced at me before quickly speaking up.

I appreciate the offer, Mrs. Maddox. But Zane and I are trying to have another baby. So I don't think staying here would be good for me. Or even his wife.

My mother-in-laws face tightened in a flash. That imbecile with no home training! You don't have to worry about her. She was never a part of this family. I don't even know why she is still here ruining our family's luck. My son should have kicked her into the dirty street where she belongs a long time ago!

Her words shot several burning daggers into my chest. But compared to what I overheard the day before, they didn't hurt a bit.

With a flat expression on my face. I said nothing and turned to walk away but someone shoved me hard in the shoulder sending me crashing to the floor.

Ahh, I screamed out in pain. Trying to stand back up on my feet. My whole body was aching terribly.

You gold-digging prostitute! My mother-in-law screamed at me and hit me so hard on my head that I instantly felt a headache.

What was that for? I barked at her, my hands clenched in a tight fist.

How dare you walk out on me while I was still talking? When did you become even more disrespectful and obnoxious than you already were?! This shameless attitude of yours is the reason why you and your son were kidnapped and why you watched him being chopped to death! She hissed venomously.

I stared at her with tightly pressed lips as her words dug deep into my heart, wounding it.

Instead of making baseless rumours. Direct your questions to your son, not me. He probably remembers it better than I do! I fired back.

You imbecile She tried to hit me in the head again but Zane appeared, catching her hand in the air.

Stop this, Mom! Why are you laying your hands on my wife? He questioned.

Liana, are you okay? He asked, brushing his fingers against my cheek.

I shoved his hand away and stepped back. The contact made my skin crawl. Back then, his touch was everything that I needed to feel alive but now it was the very thing I dreaded the most.

His mother had always been this way. Back then, she was equally disgusted as she is with me now. Just because I didn't grow up in a luxurious mansion like the other ladies she thought were more fitting for her son.

The only reason she eventually let her son marry me was because he told her that I was very fertile and she was greedy for a grandson. But now, even that was unachievable. And I would still be the one to be thrown back under the bus.

Laina, don't be so stubborn. You shouldn't have walked out on my mother and Selena in the first place. You were wrong. So apologize to them right this instant! Zane growled.

I chuckled dryly. Why are they even here in the first place? Why should I apologize for walking out of a conversation I wasn't interested in?

You let her raise her voice at you like this? His mother roared.

Maybe I should just leave. Clearly, I'm not wanted here and I don't want to make things worse between you both. Selena said. Her eyes were wide in false innocence.

Daddy, why is the housemaid being so loud? A tiny voice rang out from the living room.

My eyes rested on him. He was the one who opened the door for me earlier. And only now did I realize just how much he resembled Zane. He had his eyes and even the color of his hair.

He should be about three years old, around the same time I got married to Zane.

[ LIANA'S POV ]

Pointing at the little boy, I glared at Zane. Who is he?

He reached for the little boy's hand, smiling down at him. And he didn't even blink when he fed me the lie straight to my face

Dont you remember my best friend died about two years ago? This is his son, Jacob. Since his death, I've been the one taking care of him and Selena. They are here today because I want us all to be a complete family. He went on.

I snorted. A complete family? Is that why he referred to you as his Dad just now?

Zane nodded boldly. Yes, I told him too. Since his father is dead, I want him to see me as the father figure in his life. I want to be there for him.

I forced out a tiny nod.

Then Zane suddenly thrust a large bouquet of white lilies toward me. I got your favorite. He grinned proudly.

I forced a smile that didn't reach my eyes. Three years with him and he still didn't know that I was severely allergic to lilies.

The strong scent hit my nose, it burned and my eyes watered. Before I could move away, a violent sneeze tore through me, followed by a choking cough that left me clutching the table for balance.

What the hell, Liana?! If I'm such a problem, then say it to my face instead of spitting all over me and my son. Ughh how irritating! Selena whined furiously.

I struggled to catch my breath. You're all the way there. I didn't even sneeze in your direction.

But I gasped, frightenedly, when Zane suddenly gripped my neck, almost choking me.

Apologize to them this instant. Or I swear I'll make you wipe it off with your face and throw you out in the street looking exactly like the filthy disgrace you are! He said through clenched teeth.

My eyes were blurry as I looked at Zane. He must have felt guilty because he instantly took his hand off my neck, avoiding my gaze.

Daddy, help Mummy, Jacob called, tugging at Zane's arm.

Without a glance at me, Zane dashed off to where Selena was. He wrapped his arms around her waist, gently resting her head on his chest, and kept on placing soft kisses on her forehead.

The disgusting gems from her sneeze are making me sick, Zane. I feel so awful like Im about to throw up. Selena Lamented.

Zane glared at me. You see what you've done?! Now the whole place is filthy. You better clean it all up right now! I don't want a single trace of your gems left in my house!

He held Jacob's hand and I watched as they walked out of the house.

But my mother-in-law still stood there for a few more seconds, eyeing me from head to toe. Youve always been nothing but a stain in this family. Get that, you nuisance! She spat before walking out.

I bit my lip, holding back tears as I scrubbed the floor, cleaning every corner just like Zane demanded. And even gathering the scattered petals that had fallen from the bouquet when he had gripped my neck.

By the time I was done, I was so dizzy. I struggled with the stairs, walking sluggishly into the bedroom Zane and I had shared for three years. Not knowing that I had been sleeping with the wolf in sheep's clothing.

Zane Maddox. I vividly remember the day I met him and fell in love at first sight with him. He had been sitting lonely at the edge of a river at midnight after Selena ran off with his fortune. I remember watching him cry before he tried to drown himself to death.

After I had saved him that night, I took him to my place and let him spend the night there. But even after he got well, he didn't want to leave because he had nowhere to go. He ended up spending a Month in my place and living off my money.

Some time later, I realized that I had actually seen him somewhere before. He was the one who had helped me when my car broke down in the middle of the road. He had been like an angel to me that day.

After a while, Zane blamed himself for leeching off me. Especially after I had offered to give him my whole life savings to help him get back up on his feet.

After all my sacrifices, he decided he needed to make it up to me and ended up proposing to me. We had a small wedding with no guests.

Whenever I was seen with him, people always assumed I was just a maid, and only around him to run his personal errands.

Even when we eventually moved in as spouses, his parents had sent me packing out of the house while he was out because they were so against him being with me.

They wanted him with someone worthy. Someone like Selena.

Now she was back. I didn't know when it started, but Zane was head over heels with her all over again, and his parents were in full support as usual.

He was under her control. And he was ready to cross any line for her even if it meant crushing me just to see her smile.

I opened my drawer and tucked inside was a huge white folder, which was the Property Settlement Draft I had prepared weeks before my son's first birthday. I hadn't told a soul, but the moment I started planning for my son's first birthday, I planned to gradually take back all that was mine.

Things were slowly getting together. Now all I needed was the divorce papers in my hand, and Jacks signature on these to seal the rest.

I tucked the file back into the drawer.

I stood in front of our photo frame for a few seconds. The only photo of us and the only proof that we were married.

I took it off the wall. It was small and weightless, perfect to fit into the huge bag I had kept for this day.

Then I brought out all the luxurious-looking, half-naked dresses he had bought and tossed them into the bag.

The door suddenly pushed open with Zane appearing.

What is all this ruckus about? Are you changing rooms? Why is all the stuff I bought for you in that bag? He asked, eyeing the bag and me.

I stood firmly. They are not my style. I was thinking of offering them out to people who actually like them.

Zane shook his head. No, I want you to keep them. They always look good on you. In fact, when you wear those dresses, that's the time that I see you as my wife. So, I'll buy you more. Also, I want you and Selena to have a good relationship. She is my best friend's wife, and she is going to be staying here from now on.

I rolled my eyes. Why am I just learning that you have a best friend? I've never met him. Since you are always with your brother.

Zane spoke out immediately. Because hes never been the social type, and I was the only one by his side. Now that he is dead, it's my responsibility to provide and be by his family's side too. Trust me, Liana. You are the only woman in my heart. Selena is really nothing to me. I swear.

I remained quiet for a few seconds. I knew he was lying, but he really almost had me convinced, and that even pained me the most.

I took a firm step toward him and forced out a smile. I believe you. But she is not welcome to stay here. I don't want her here, Zane.

(LIANA'S POV)

No. I can't agree to that, Liana. I made myself clear. She is now my responsibility. I want her here. Ill ask her to come, so you two can finally talk things through and be friends.

Zane held my shoulders. He wanted to hug me but I pulled away. So he patted my head instead, before quickly walking out of the room.

Selena walked in almost immediately, a mischievous smile on her face. I see you are already making space for me to put my stuff when I move in.

I sighed. Yeah. I hope you have a good time.

Selena snorted. By now you should know why your husband is acting so differently towards you. I'm sure he has already thanked you. We waited so long for your child to be born for our sake. My little boy is doing so well now. You should be happy you did something so important for once in your life.

I nodded, casually leaning against the wall. Good for you. I'm glad you are happy after benefiting from my pain.

I noticed how her arms dropped to her sides with disappointment. Come on, don't kill the vibe. You should be all over the place right now screaming and rolling yourself on the floor. I convinced your husband to get you pregnant so we can harvest your child's organs for mine!

I barely nodded. Yeah, I know. You must feel good to have him under your control. I hope you are happy you got what you wanted.

Selena flung her purse to the floor with a loud hiss. Then suddenly, she pinned me to the wall.

You lowlife! You are just trying to act tough, aren't you? I will show you what tough is. She grinned evilly.

Get off me! I flared, trying to push her off me.

Selena barely moved. We struggled for a moment. She suddenly staggered towards the window and her hand gripped my wrist like I had shoved her.

Liana, wait She screamed as she fell out the window.

Zane and his mother ran out of the house just a few seconds later. Selena lay on the concrete, blood running from her head, her leg bent the wrong way and she wasnt moving at all.

Zane looked up at me. Fire in his eyes. You witch! How could you?!

I remained fixed at my spot, staring down at Selena lying in her own pool of blood. Jacob ran out too, crying at the top of his lungs.

He fell to her side. Mommy, wake up!

Zane pointed at me like I was a culprit running away. You'd better get on your knees and pray hard. If Selena dies, I'll make sure you follow to hell.

Then he lifted her into his arms and took her to his car with Jacob running and wailing behind him.

His mother hissed at me. You are finally starting to show your true colors, you devil's spawn!

Soon the house was empty with just me standing there, my back still pressed against the cold wall. They were all so quick to believe that I pushed her. None of them even asked what really happened.

Exhausted by everything, I dozed off where I was. Suddenly, I felt strong hands grab both my arms, and something covered my nose, forcing me to pass out.

By the time I woke up, I was lying on a cold metal table. My hands and feet were chained, and Zane was standing in front of me.

Z-Zane, oh my God! Was I kidnapped again? You're here to save me, right?

In your dreams. I would rather let them kill you before you do the same to the love of my life! He reacted quickly.

Then he pulled off his belt and lashed it on my arm. The pain was so sharp that it tore my skin and blood started running down my arm.

I've been turning a blind eye to all your wickedness, but not anymore. You disgust me, Liana. You're like a curse in my life, I wish I had never met you. The surgery is already arranged, you'll be giving your liver to Selena because you almost killed her.

I shook my head vigorously. She fell on her own. It's not my fault. Im not giving her anything!

Zane's eyes darkened. He slammed his fists on the table. Dont you dare lie! I saw you push her. The doctors said her liver was destroyed from the fall. Lucky for her, you are a perfect match. You don't have a choice, Liana. Either you give it willingly or we take it from you anyway. You owe her. You owe me!

I shot back. I owe you nothing!

Instantly, he grabbed my chin hard, forcing me to look into his eyes. If you think Ill let you walk away after what you did, youre wrong. This is the least you can do after almost taking her life.

You are hurtingme. I cried out in pain, feeling his fingers dig into my skin.

She can't get injured before the surgery, Mr. Maddox. The doctor informed loudly.

Zane reluctantly let go. You will give my Selena your liver. And that's final.

Then he turned to the doctor. Prepare her. And take what you need from her.

That would be dangerous for her, Sir. We can get a liver from any donor list. We recently just removed her womb, Liana could die if we try to take anything else from her. The doctor informed him.

Zane slapped him hard across the face. I don't fucking care. Better she dies than my Selena. Do it! He spat coldly.

As he walked away, the doctor came over to sedate me even as I screamed and tried to free myself from the chains.

My body instantly grew heavy, and my eyelids became too weak to stay open. I knew they were putting me to sleep for the surgery so they could take my liver.

After everything I had already lost, now even my life was slipping away. My vision blurred, and slowly, my eyes closed as the darkness swallowed me whole.

***

I blinked awake as a harsh light beamed directly into my eyes. The glare burned me harshly, forcing me to squint. When my vision cleared, I realized I was in a surgical gown and Zane was watching me closely.

My head ached terribly. I tried to move up but the chains kept me glued to the metal table.

Finished with the drama? Zane asked me.

I sighed heavily. Leave me alone, Zane. I feel so sick.

Suddenly, he yanked my chained wrist hard against the table, making me cry out.

Zane, just stop please. I can't take it anymore. I whimpered.

My whole body felt weak like I was going to pass out. I couldn't handle any more of this. But Zane didn't seem to care.

His hand aggressively gripped my neck. You devil! Hurting Selena wasn't enough, now even my son?!

(LIANAS POV)

I shook my head confusedly. I did nothing to Selena. And why would I hurt your son?

His grip tightened around my neck. Stop playing dumb, you piece of trash! Jacob is the heir to my bloodline, and I would protect him with my life. You want to ruin me through him, right? Well, I'll make sure you suffer twice as much.

I scoffed with disbelief. And he finally released my neck. Youre truly a fool, Zane. Blaming me for things I would never do while boldly flaunting that you indeed fathered a bastard son with another woman. Pathetic!

Dont ever speak about my son or the woman I truly love like that. You knew damn well I never wanted you. You forced yourself into my life like a parasite, knowing my heart was with someone else. And now, after all that, you have the nerve to play the victim? How disgraceful. Youre nothing but a bitter witch trying to drag down the people who actually matter to me. He snarled.

My expression tightened. So that's how you see me even after all the sacrifices I made for you. And my son

Just shut up! Don't start your drama right now. You are a witch who should be locked up in jail forever! He snapped.

Just then his men led a lady in. Her arms were chained behind her back.

Forgive me, Sir. Liana is my best friend. She lied to me about you. And I just wanted to help her take revenge. She deceived me into kidnapping your son.

My jaw dropped in disbelief. Who is she? What is she talking about?

Stop acting like a saint! Zane was enraged.

I held the tears in. I don't know her. And I have no idea what she is talking about. You have to believe me, Zane.

With a gesture from him, his men rushed over to take the chains off me. Zane's fingers pierced into my cheeks immediately as he dragged me to my feet.

Dont test my patience, Liana. Better stop pretending and confess every rotten thing you've done, or I'll make sure you pay for it in ways you can't even imagine. He hissed.

No. I refuse to take the blame for something I didn't do. I protested.

Zane dragged me outside and into the car. The driver sped onto the highway.

Zane suddenly pulled the door open. The wind rushed in.

Confess right this instant or Ill throw you out! He shouted, shoving me toward the open door.

My head pounded with terror and pain.

Zane, don't do this to me. I beg you. I screamed and cried out but he just kept shoving me farther away.

I told you not to test my patience. He shoved me hard. My body flew out of the car, rolling on the road.

And suddenly, a truck's headlights blinded me, rushing straight at me, the horn blaring very loudly.

I cried and screamed for help. But then my eyes snapped open, and I was in my bed, drenched in sweat. It was all just a dream.

It's okay, Mrs. Maddox. I'm right here. The Nurse patted my shoulders.

The chains were no longer on me. And Zane was nowhere to be found.

But just as I sat up, Zane, Selena, and his mother all walked into the room.

Selena wanted to hug me, but I moved away and turned to the Nurse. Is Anything wrong?

Zane stormed forward. You filthy parasite! It's only because of Selena that you are alive right now. After I pushed you out of the car, the truck was about to crush you to death but I only saved you because Selena wanted me to. She is the love of my life and I couldn't go against her words. Now you are treating her like trash when she literally left her own sick bed to watch over you for days. How evil can you get, Liana?!

My face held an emotionless expression for a few seconds before I scoffed out loud.

Wow what a touching story. The great husband who threw his wife out of a moving car, then played savior because his mistress asked. Truly, you deserve a medal. Should I clap for you both, or bow?

Zane's Mother laughed out dryly. I told you! You shouldn't have saved an animal like her. Even after you saved her miserable life, she dares to mock you. What a useless, rotten woman.

I sneered. Rotten? Look in the mirror before calling me that. You raised a coward who hides behind his mistress and his mother's skirts. A coward who chose my baby's death with his own hands.

Her smile vanished. And Zane's face stiffened. Liana, you've been through so much. Sit down, let's talk calmly. You know I only want what's best for you.

Selena suddenly wrapped her arms around me. Oh, Liana. Please don't hate me. I didn't expect such a small thing to break you so badly. Her voice dripped with pretence.

Drop the drama and stay away from me! I snapped, pushing her aside. She fell to the floor.

Selena! Zane rushed to her, then turned towards me with fire in his eyes. He stormed forward and slapped me hard across the face.

Im warning you, Liana. Do not ever dare touch her again. She is worth more than you'll ever be. He shouted. Then he held Selena's hand as they all exited the room.

The Nurse stood silently in a corner.

Can you get the Doctor for me, please. I wish to be discharged. I said.

The Nurse smiled faintly and walked out of the room.

***

Before going back home, I stopped by the lawyer's office to get the divorce papers. Then I headed straight home to get hold of the property Settlement Draft too. Now all I had to do was get Zane to sign them somehow, without knowing what they actually were.

After that, I was taking a short nap when Zane appeared and yanked me up by my arm. Then he threw a red dress in my face.

Wear this. You have to escort me to a business dinner. He snapped.

No. I'm not interested. You can take Selena as your escort instead. I replied.

Are you that dumb? Of course, I'm going with Selena as my woman. But I want you there as my escort to run business errands when needed. You are good at that. He declared.

Come over here, darling. I have something to show you. Selena called from a distance.

Zane grinned widely. He was about to walk away, but I quickly thrust a pen, the property settlement draft, and the divorce papers into his hand.

Sign them quickly before you go. It's for the company's benefit. I said.

He had a deep frown on his face as he looked at the documents. He was about to turn them over to read but Selena's voice echoed relentlessly behind him.

Come on, baby. I need you here right now.

He turned to her, looking at her with a big smile as he quickly penned his signature on both documents before throwing them carelessly to the floor and then running off to Selena.

At first, I felt a bit hurt by how effortlessly he dismissed me, but I brushed the feeling off and smirked proudly as I watched him go. The deed was finally sealed.

[ LIANAS POV ]

I slipped into the red dress he had chosen for me, though I never liked the color. It hugged my body too tightly, making me look scandalous like a mistress instead of his wife.

As I walked down the stairs, Zane's eyes lingered on me so intensely that he didn't even hear Selena calling his name again and again. Only when she touched his shoulder did he finally turn away.

I offered to take a different car but Zane didn't let me. So I ended up being in the same car with them.

The ride was suffocating. Selena wouldn't sit still. She kept twisting in her seat, leaning over to rub herself against Zane's arm, laughing too loudly for no reason, and even relentlessly trying to kiss him.

I sat quietly in the back, watching her make a fool of herself just to spite me.

She smirked, glancing at me through the mirror as she leaned towards Zane again. Come on, kiss me like you always

Zane shoved her aside. Behave yourself, Selena. Don't make me throw you out of this car!

He glanced my way, wanting to see some reaction. But I was too busy staring at my wrist watch and calculating the time when I would finally be out of this nightmare.

I had confirmed that everything was set before leaving the house. All I had to do was make sure I made it back home in time to get my things and disappear forever.

What the hell are you looking at with such a smile on your face? Zane questioned, seizing my wrist.

Are you timing when to run away or what? He glared intensely at the watch before taking it off my wrist, and tucking it aside.

I said nothing.

Soon we arrived at the dinner party. Selena rushed out even before Zane could. She held his arm, posing for the Cameras and waving proudly to the people who kept referring to her as Mrs. Maddox.

Zane also smiled and waved proudly. Even though he kept stealing glances at me for reasons unclear.

I stood quietly at the back, my head facing down and looking exactly like an errand girl and not the real Mrs. Maddox of three years.

It was just in the middle of the dinner party when suddenly fire blazed through the hall. People screamed and scrambled for the exits as smoke spread everywhere.

I froze in one spot when I saw Zane shielding Selena with his body and leading her to the exit, while leaving me behind. My heart burned with hurt, like the fire was in me.

Then, suddenly, with a loud crash, the huge chandelier from the ceiling came loose and fell straight on me. I hit the ground hard, my body aching and bleeding from the impact, and pain shooting through me as I struggled to move.

Zane Please help me. I cried weakly, calling for him.

Seeing the state I was in, he left Selena and rushed to my side. He lifted the chandelier off me and held me close to his chest.

I'm right here. You'll be okay. I got you. He consoled me.

Zane I think I'm having a leg cramp. Selena groaned audibly. Zane left me in a flash and went to her.

He held her up on his back and glanced coldly at me on the floor. Stop being dramatic, Liana. You'll live. Selena needs me now. I will come back for you.

And just like that, he exited the building with Selena. She looked at me, grinning proudly, while I lay there broken, bruised, and forgotten.

***

Two hours passed, and I was still under the table where I had crawled to, bleeding and waiting for Zane. But he never came back.

I must have blacked out at some point, because when I opened my eyes again, the hall was empty. It was silent, filled with ruins, and then me.

I dragged myself to the hospital with every single strength I had left. The Doctor attended to me with pity.

When I finally got home, I met Selena, Ethan, Zane, and his mother in the living room, watching TV together and laughing out loud like they didn't abandon me to die in a burning building.

Zane jerked up to his feet the moment he saw me. Oh shit. Liana, it's not my fault. Selena was really sick. I totally forgot about you.

I can see that, I said flatly.

Ignoring him, I went upstairs and grabbed my wedding ring, and his that had been abandoned in the drawer for months.

I had already sold the wedding dress, and thrown away the only photo frame we had together behind his back. These rings were the last straw. I marched to the bathroom, threw them into the toilet, and flushed.

My chest felt tight as I watched the rings disappear. For years, I had guarded them like treasures, convincing myself they meant something. But now, letting them go felt like tearing off the last chain he had on me. It hurt, but beneath the pain, there was some kind of relief and freedom.

Zane appeared. What have you done? Have you gone mad?!

He rushed to the toilet and tried to see if he could get the rings back but they had long vanished.

Why would you do something so stupid? Do you even know how much those rings were worth?! He questioned.

I frowned. I don't care. Whatever we have going on between us ends here, Zane. I want a divorce.

Zane didn't say a word. I saw his lips quiver with fear for a few seconds, and then he burst out laughing.

You must be out of your mind to think you can walk out of this marriage. Without me, you would be in the street right now!

I scoffed at his face, before walking past him and heading back to the room. I locked the door and turned the radio on to the loudest setting.

Zane kept sending me text messages and calling my phone, but I didn't reply to any of them.

That night, Zane even requested my favorite song on the late-night radio show. It was the same thing he did the first time he apologized to me years ago.

If it were then, the sound of it would have made me cry and forgive him instantly. But the moment he turned his back when the chandelier fell on me and left me to die, everything inside me withered and perished.

In place of it was just a hollow shell that couldn't feel, couldn't forgive, and certainly couldn't love him anymore.

***

The next morning, I woke up as early as I could and in a good mood, ready to catch my flight later in the day.

When I opened my bedroom door, Zane was standing there with a big smile on his face, holding a tray of food. My favorite.

I made you breakfast. He said gently.

His lips were curled up with the same smile he had the night he proposed to me. And his smile still had a spark, but it didn't light me up like it used me. I was over him.

I really want to make it up to you, Liana. Can you give me a second chance? He asked softly.

I chuckled dryly. Second chances are earned not given.

He stepped forward. So, please let me take you out tonight back to where I proposed. Maybe we can start over.

I forced out a tiny smile. Okay.

You should wear one of the dresses I bought for you. We're going to have lots of fun. He said, handing the tray of food to me.

Then he left, murmuring to himself excitedly.

My phone started to ring just as I walked back into the room. It was the man who was soon to be my partner and protector calling.

I've waited too long for this. Don't make me come drag you myself.

I replied quickly. No need, Draven. I'll be there.

[ LIANA'S POV ]

I placed the three letters I had written for Zane on the table. By the time he read them, I would be long gone.

Like he wanted, I got dressed in one of the outfits he had previously bought for me.

Just as I stepped out of the bedroom, Zane marched towards me with Selena and his mother.

He shoved me hard against the wall.

After everything I've done for you. This is how you repay me?!

What are you talking about? I asked, confused, struggling to balance myself back up on my two feet. But his mother shoved me hard against the wall again. I winced out in pain this time.

You plotted with someone to set the hall on fire last night just to test my loyalty for you. You must have lost your mind to carry out such an evil act! People almost lost their lives in that fire! My Selena got so traumatized because of it! Zane snapped.

Selena clung to his arm dramatically, her fake tears already staining her cheeks.

Zane, dont waste your breath on her. Cant you see shes dangerous? You are losing your mind, Liana. I really think you need help. I did nothing wrong for you to despise me this much. Something needs to be done before you take the lives of innocent people, including me and my kids.

I agree. You should be locked up in a mental hospital for the rest of your life, you evil being! Zane's mother chimed in, her eyes burning with contempt.

I pressed my lips together and refused to say anything as they all threw insults at me. It wasn't like they were going to hear me out anyway, so why even bother?

Look at her, just sitting there like shes the victim. Selena sneered, folding her arms. You want pity, Liana? You wont get it from me. Not after what you did. I almost died from the smoke. My kids could have been motherless because of what you did. You really don't care about this family.

I dont know what youre talking about, I finally muttered, my voice low and my back still aching from the push.

Dont play dumb with me! Zane roared, stepping closer until his face was inches from mine. His breath was hot with anger.

Do you think I cant see through your schemes? Always pretending to be innocent while causing chaos behind the scenes. You disgust me. Youve always been jealous, always insecure, always looking for ways to tear us apart. Admit it, Liana!

His mother jabbed a finger in my face. I warned my son about you. I told him nothing good would come out of keeping a snake in this house.

Snake? I scoffed quietly, shaking my head. Funny coming from you.

Selena gasped, clutching her chest like Id cursed her. Zane, did you hear that? She just threatened your mother!

Zane slammed his hand against the wall beside me, making me flinch. Enough! You think your smart mouth will save you? Youve crossed the line this time, Liana.

My back resting on the wall, I sat quietly on the floor and watched as Zane continued to shout at me.

Now you have once again stained the name of this family. I've been summoned because of your devilish act. You will be locked up in this house until you realize just how foolish your actions were. Dont think youll get away with it, Ill deal with you when I return. Zane spat, his voice dripping with hatred.

He stormed out with his mother.

You will suffer! Selena spat at me before following along, tossing her hair back like a triumphant queen.

The front door slammed. I heard their car drive off, and suddenly the mansion was quiet once more.

I crawled back to the room and dialed Dravens number. He picked up immediately.

Mama, whats going on?

Forget waiting, and do it now, Draven. Send out the files. I want the chaos to start and I want their lies to be exposed. They deserve to drown in their own mess. And I want to see their so-called empire crumble behind me as I disappear, I said, my voice stripped of warmth.

Draven exhaled on the other end, then chuckled darkly. All set, sweetheart. The private jet is waiting outside for you. Safe flight. He said before ending the call.

With a surge of energy and excitement, I jerked up to my feet, grabbed my bag, and exited the house at once. My heels echoed against the marble floor as if even the mansion knew I was walking away for good.

The private jet was waiting outside.

The pilot himself stood by the stairs, bowing respectfully.

Weve been expecting you, Madam. Good to see you.

I tightened my grip on my bag and walked straight toward the jet. My heart raced, not with fear this time, but with anticipation.

Inside, the jet was luxurious with cream leather seats and golden fixtures. A slight peak at how extremely wealthy Draven was.

The moment the jets engines roared to life, I sank into the seat, exhaling deeply.

As the jet took off into the sky, I smiled proudly to myself. I was finally free. Zane and his family had no idea about the storm coming for them.
