I stood still outside the private chamber of Dreadhowl Citadel, my fingers shaking around the keys to the crimson speed carriage I had saved for five winters to gift Zarek.

Seven winters of love under the Moon Goddess, seven winters of planning our future in the pack, shattered inside me like broken crystal.

"How long will you keep playing with Mireya?" A deep male voice carried through the oak door.

My heart froze when I heard my name. The metal keys bit into my palm.

"Come on, Alpha Zarek. Sabine has been asking about you since she returned from Highcrest Dominion." Another voice joined in. Glasses clinked in a toast.

"Unbelievable that you have been courting Kellan's sister all this time." A wolf laughed. "Does he even know his best friend has been sharing furs with his runaway sister?"

My brother's name struck me like a claw across my chest.

Kellan Graywolf

My brother, the Gamma of our birth pack. The same Kellan Zarek claimed he barely knew.

"Imagine his face when he learns the truth," someone said.

"He will not." Zarek's voice finally rose above the rest. Calm and cold. "Mireya was only convenient. A placeholder while Sabine was gone."

"Seven winters is a long placeholder," someone mocked.

"She made it simple. So hungry for affection after her pack troubles." Zarek chuckled. "All those tales about knowing her brother, about waiting to reveal everything after our mating ceremony. She swallowed every word."

The keys slipped from my hand and struck the marble floor. The sharp sound echoed like a howl of betrayal. Silence fell inside the chamber.

"Did you hear that?"

I did not stay. I ran down the stone corridor, leaving behind the gift I had planned, leaving behind seven winters of lies, leaving behind the second pack I thought was my home.

I collapsed onto my bed in our shared den, tears staining the pillow. The darkness of the room felt like the hollow inside my chest. Every memory replayed. Every kiss beneath the full moon. Every promise he whispered about claiming me as his Luna.

The front door opened. I wiped my face quickly as his steps approached.

"Mireya?" Zarek's voice sounded warm, the same voice that once made my wolf purr. The lamps lit the room. "You would not believe what happened at dinner."

I turned over and forced a smile. "How was it?"

"It was good. Nice seeing everyone again." He removed his jacket. "Strangest thing though. The guards found keys to a red speed carriage outside our private chamber. Can you imagine someone dropping that?"

My chest tightened. "That is strange."

"And tomorrow night we have plans." He sat beside me. "My old schoolmate, Sabine Bloodrose, is back from Highcrest Dominion. She is hosting a gathering."

Sabine. The name tasted like ash.

"The friend you mentioned before?" I asked softly.

"Yes, just a classmate." He brushed it aside easily. "You will come, right?"

I searched his eyes for guilt, for even a shadow of the cruelty I had heard. There was nothing. Only that charming smile that once felt safe.

"Of course," I said. "I would not miss it."

He pressed a kiss to my forehead. "Good. Rest, little wolf."

Soon his breathing became steady. I stared at the ceiling while silent tears slid into my hair.

The next evening, his hand rested on my lower back as we entered Sabine's high tower suite. His touch burned through my black gown.

"Mireya, try the moon wine." He handed me a crystal glass and kissed my temple in front of the gathered wolves.

Across the room stood Sabine in a red dress, her gaze fixed on him like prey marked by a hunter.

I slipped away toward the corridor that led to the washroom.

"Well, look who it is. The runaway sister." Sabine's voice cut through the hall.

She leaned against the wall, glass dangling from her fingers. The red fabric clung to her like fresh blood.

"It must be easy, living your perfect life while your brother carried the weight alone," she said with a sneer. "Do you know how selfish that is? Abandoning your pack?"

My throat tightened. How did she know?

Zarek.

I had told him everything. Every secret beneath the moonlight. He had handed her my scars like weapons.

"What is wrong? No words?" She stepped closer. "Zarek and I have history. Deep bonds. The kind that do not fade because some girl pretended to be his Luna."

I pressed back against the wall.

"Tonight he returns to me," she said, draining her glass. "He was always mine. You were just warming his den while I was away."

I struggled to breathe as she moved closer.

"Want to hear something amusing?" Her finger traced my arm. "Two nights ago, while you were at your art gathering"

My stomach dropped.

"He came to my place first." She lowered her voice. "Then he said he wanted it in his own bed. Yours and his."

My vision blurred.

"Those silk sheets you adore?" She leaned near my ear. "We ruined them."

My knees weakened. I gripped the stone wall.

"The way he pulled my hair, forced me down." She ran her hand through her dark locks. "He said you were too gentle. Too safe. But me?" She laughed softly. "I awaken the beast in him."

Tuesday night flashed in my mind. I had slept in those sheets. He had kissed me there.

"He changed the bedding quickly after," Sabine whispered, gripping my wrist. "He did not want his precious Mireya discovering what kind of Alpha he truly is. Though I must say, the danger of being caught made it even sweeter."

Sabine's heels echoed along the stone corridor of the tower, leaving me alone beneath the silver lantern light. Her words pressed on my chest like a crushing weight.

I gripped the marble basin, my knuckles pale against the cold surface. The mirror reflected a stranger. My wolf eyes looked dull. I barely knew the she wolf staring back.

Seven winters. Seven winters of memories in that den. The first night he pulled me close beneath the full moon and told me he loved me. Quiet mornings wrapped together in silk furs, his fingers tracing idle shapes along my skin.

Sickness rose in my throat. Two nights ago. While I was learning how to capture light with a lens stone, dreaming of our future mating ceremony, he had been with her.

My stomach twisted hard. I rushed to the basin, but nothing came out. Only dry, painful heaves that shook my body.

I pressed my forehead to the cool stone and fought the tears. I would not cry here. Not where pack wolves could see the tracks on my cheeks and know they had broken me.

The same bed. Our den. The silk furs I bought with a month of wages because he once said he loved the feel of them against his skin. He had taken her there on purpose. He had stained every memory in that sacred place.

My reflection trembled again.

I smoothed my dress, fixed my hair, steadied my breath. The tears burned behind my eyes, but I forced them back. Not now. Not in front of their cruel smiles.

Seven winters destroyed in one afternoon upon silk furs.

I walked back into the gathering hall. My legs felt heavy, yet they carried me forward. Zarek and Sabine sat across from each other at a long table covered in white linen. Steam rose from their bowls. They looked like the perfect bonded pair. My stomach churned.

I took the empty seat beside Zarek. His jaw tightened as I sat. His shoulders went rigid. The air felt thick.

Sabine's red lips curved in a secret smile, but the moment Zarek glanced at her, her face shifted. Her eyes widened with false hurt. My hands trembled with the urge to tear that mask away.

"What is wrong with you?" Zarek's voice cut through the hall like a blade.

"What?" I stared at him, stunned by the anger in his tone.

He struck the table with his palm. Dishes rattled. "Do not pretend. How could you speak about Sabine's mother like that? Her mother has just returned to the Moon Goddess and you dare to mock her grief?"

My lips parted. The room tilted. "I did not say anything about her mother."

"Stop lying," he growled. "Sabine told me what you said in the corridor. I knew you were jealous, but this is shameful."

I looked from him to her, my thoughts spinning. Sabine pressed a cloth to her eyes, acting wounded, while Zarek stared at me as if I were dirt beneath his boots.

The same Alpha who held me last night and kissed my brow now believed her without doubt. Seven winters meant nothing against her tears.

Other wolves turned to watch. Forks paused midair. Whispers spread across the hall. Heat climbed my neck. Shame burned deep inside me.

Sabine placed her hand over her chest. "Zarek, please, it is fine. She is troubled." Her voice shook as fresh tears formed. "We should not make a scene."

Her sweet tone made my skin crawl. Every tear was an act.

"Enough!" The word burst from me. "Stop pretending to cry."

His palm struck my cheek. The sharp sound echoed. Pain flared across my face, but the betrayal hurt more. I touched my cheek, still burning from his hand.

Sabine gasped softly. "I cannot stay. I need air." She pushed back her chair and hurried away.

"Sabine, wait." Zarek rose quickly, his chair scraping the floor. He did not look at me once as he followed her, leaving me alone under dozens of judging stares.

I stumbled out of the tower. My legs shook. The night air cooled my cheek. A carriage rolled by and I signaled it, climbing inside.

"Where to?" the driver asked.

I gave my address and leaned against the window. City lights blurred through my tears like falling stars. My sobs finally escaped, tearing through my chest.

Nine winters ago, I ran from fists and harsh words in my birth pack. Now I was crying again because I let another male wound me.

No more.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand. I would not let Zarek Shaw destroy me. I would not be the frightened girl who fled.

My communicator felt heavy in my purse. I took it out and scrolled until I saw his name.

Kellan.

The same number he had nine winters ago when I left. I never erased it. Guilt had kept me silent.

My brother. The Gamma who shielded me from blows. Who took the pain meant for me until I could not watch anymore.

Fresh tears blurred my sight. Before fear could stop me, I pressed the call rune.

One ring. Two rings.

The line connected. Silence stretched between us, heavy with winters of distance.

Then his voice came through, deep and familiar.

"Mireya?"

"Kellan?" My voice trembled. Speaking his name after so many winters brought back memories of running through forest paths under the full moon.

"How are you?"

"I am well, Mireya." A short pause followed. "Are you safe? Your voice sounds troubled."

Even now, after nine winters apart, he could still sense my pain.

"I am..." I tried to lie, but the words refused to come. "No. I am not safe in my heart."

"What has happened?"

I held the communication stone tightly, watching torchlights flicker outside the hired carriage. "This territory... it is not what I believed it would be. I thought I could build a future here, but..." My throat tightened. "I want to return to our homeland, Kellan."

"Then come home."

No hesitation. No anger. Just warmth.

"I will send one of my men. Stay at the Moonrest Inn near the eastern gates until we arrange everything."

Two hours later, I sat on the edge of a neatly made bed inside a quiet room at the Moonrest Inn. The scent of burning herbs lingered in the air. My hands twisted together as heavy footsteps approached along the wooden corridor.

A knock sounded.

My heart pounded. For a moment I feared it would be Zarek standing there.

I opened the door.

A tall warrior stood before me. His dark hair brushed his forehead and his green eyes were sharp like a hunting wolf. A fitted leather tunic covered his broad chest and a sword rested at his side.

"Mireya?" His voice was deep and steady. "My name is Bastien Raventhorn. Your brother sent me."

I studied him carefully. He carried himself like a trained Beta. Strong but controlled. His gaze was intense, yet not cruel.

"May I enter?"

I stepped aside.

The small room felt tighter with his presence, though he moved with calm ease.

"Are you holding up?" His eyes shifted to the small travel bag at the foot of the bed.

"I am managing." I folded my arms to hide their trembling. "I just need time to think."

"That is understandable." He rested one shoulder lightly against the wooden wall.

"How long have you served my brother?"

A faint smile touched his lips. "Long enough."

"That tells me very little."

"I prefer silence over stories."

I tried again. "What is it you do for him?"

"I stand at his side." He glanced toward the window. "Our horses are ready. We will return to your den first to gather what you need, then ride straight to the air docks before dawn."

"Horses?" I blinked. "That seems excessive."

"It is necessary."

"For what?" The question slipped out.

He only gave that same calm look. "Your brother handles matters carefully."

The private inn chamber. The armed escort. This warrior who carried himself like someone from a ruling bloodline. None of it matched the brother I remembered. Kellan had always been protective, but this level of preparation felt different. What had he become in these nine winters?

"You look surprised," Bastien observed.

"I did not expect this. The private room. The escort." I searched his face. "Who exactly are you?"

"I am someone your brother trusts with his life." His small crystal stone glowed faintly. "The horses grow restless. Are you ready?"

Outside, two powerful black stallions waited, their breath visible in the cold night air. Bastien mounted smoothly and offered his hand to help me onto the second horse.

The ride through the moonlit streets felt unreal. Stone buildings passed by in silence. The scent of night wind and distant forest filled my lungs.

"This feels different," I murmured.

"Different from what?"

"Zarek holds wealth and status. But this..." I looked at the disciplined way Bastien rode. "This feels like power that does not need to be shown."

He said nothing, but I sensed a quiet agreement.

We stopped before my stone den within Dreadhowl territory.

"I will wait here," Bastien said as he dismounted. "Take only what you truly need."

I nodded and walked toward the wooden door. My fingers trembled around the iron key.

The door creaked open.

The moment I stepped inside, my world shattered.
