Heathers POV
Today was our first anniversary, and I walked into Alpha Austin's office, clutching two things that would make him the happiest Alpha in the world.
First, a signed treaty with the present Alpha King.
And second, a sonogram of our pup.
After I suffered three miscarriages, Austin was finally going to be a father
However, just as I was about to knock, a womans voice came from the room.
When are you going to reject your mate, Alpha?
My heart seemed to stop in my chest.
The woman continued. I mean, you just met her, while I had been keeping your bed warm for years.
I peeked through the tiny crack in the door.
The she-wolf Olivia, who brought me tea and pills, is on Austin's lap. Their clothes were all over the floor.
Austin spoke.
You know I cant just reject Heather. Shes the reason the pack tripled. Shes in talks with the king now. That deal will make us the most powerful pack in two regions.
My stomach twisted as my mate touched another woman the way he used to touch me.
The hands that once held me when I lost our pups were on Olivias waist, her hips, and her throat.
"But Austin, what if Heather finds out? Arent you worried about what she might do?" Olivia asked.
"Shes nothing without me," he scoffed. "She has no one else. Her father is already dead. Im all she has left.
The words punched the air out of my lungs.
Nothing without him?
I forced my hand to stay on the door instead of on the handle.
"So youre keeping her for business?" Olivia asked. "But Im still your one and only?"
Austin kissed her shoulder, then her lips.
"Of course. You know how much I love you. I proved it when I told you to keep contaminating Heathers drinks with birth control concoction."
I leaned against the doorframe. The wood was the only thing holding me up.
No.
Austin could not do such a thing. He was the one who held me when I bled. He was the one who told me it wasnt my fault.
I had believed every word.
"And the same potion that numbs her from the mate bond," Olivia added. "Shell never know youre sleeping with someone else."
My hands trembled as I looked down at the sonogram again.
No wonder my past pregnancies failed.
Three times, I thought I lost a baby because I was too stressed.
Turned out she was poisoning my pups all along.
'Luna, drink this. It will help you relax. Its good for your pups,' she would have always said.
And me, so stupid, swallowing every drop while Austin rubbed my back and told me to rest.
But two weeks ago, I secretly stopped drinking the concoctions, and I didn't expect that decision would save the babies I carry now.
A phone rang inside the room.
Austin grunted, annoyed. He pressed the speaker and went right back to holding Olivia.
"Alpha, we found the witness youve been searching for.
I held my breath.
What witness?
"Are you sure?" Austin asked.
"Yes, Alpha. He was the one who saw Miss Olivia kill Alpha Henry."
I pressed a hand to my mouth, trying not to scream.
My father?
Olivia killed my father?
My knees buckled. I slid down the wall until I caught myself.
No, this was too much.
My father had been kind to Olivia.
She was a rogue pup from a raid, but my father pitied her and kept her as his own daughter.
And father saved Austin too.
He sheltered him when their old pack fell. Without my father, Austin would have grown up homeless.
So why would they betray him? Why murder the very man who kept them alive?
"Covering up the murder was supposed to be simple," Austin said. "But that damn witness wont stop running his mouth."
Olivia sighed, as if she were just tired of a boring job. "You shouldve killed him the moment he saw me stab Henry. Now hes threatening to expose everything."
Each word was another break.
She said it so casually. Like my father was just another problem to clean up.
Austin growled. "I handled it, didnt I? I told Heather that rogues killed her father. She believed me. She always believes me."
All those nights I had thanked him for staying with me after the attack.
But he had just built my whole world out of lies and then locked me inside it.
Olivia giggled and brushed her fingers through his hair.
"Well, you better kill the witness before dawn. I wont have anyone ruining our future."
My wolf went silent for a second.
Then she howled inside me, saying, Shift. Kill. End them.
Austin turned his attention back to the call.
"Bring him to the dungeons. Ill end his life before dawn." His tone was cold.
"Now Heather will believe you forever," Olivia whispered, laughing.
"Im doing this for you," Austin said. "She runs the pack. You get me. Youre my real one."
My wolf surged up, making my claws slide out. They bit into the wood of the door.
I fought her hard, pressing my back against the frame. The door creaked under the pressure.
"Whos there?" Austin shouted.
When I realized he noticed me, I pulled away from the door and quickly grabbed the sonogram and the treaty from the floor with shaking hands.
I forced my legs to move.
In the bedroom, I went straight to the safe.
My fingers shook so badly I even dropped the keys twice, but I managed to tuck the documents inside.
My head was spinning. Every breath hurts.
My mate was a liar.
The she-wolf I had treated as my sister was my fathers killer.
The pups I lost were murdered.
My whole life with Austin was a corpse all along.
I stared at the window, fighting the urge to howl.
Austin thought I was a helpless fool with no family to back me up?
But there was one person who had always been in my life since I was a pup. One alpha he could not control.
I straightened my back and opened my mind.
I mindlinked him. "Alpha King Daniel. Its me again."
His voice came through with a low chuckle. "We just talked this morning. Forget something?"
I stared ahead, eyes burning.
"Forget the treaty with Austin. Instead, lets make our own agreement."
Heathers POV
"Our own agreement? Does this have something to do with our unfinished business in the past?"
My wolf leaned toward his voice.
"I want Austin and his mistress punished, and for murdering my father and unborn pups."
If Daniel was a rock, I had just cracked it, and then I felt his aura rise.
"What the hell did you say?" he asked. Your sister and mate killed Uncle Henry?
"You heard me," I answered. My throat still burned. "Olivia, the woman my father adopted, killed him. And my mate helped her."
Silence dropped between us.
When Daniel spoke again, the lazy tone was gone.
"Do you want it now? Because I can order the world for their execution in a nanosecond.
Not the word. The world.
And I knew he was not exaggerating.
He could send hunters, executioners, enforcers, all in one breath.
One order from him and Austin and Olivia would be dragged out by their hair and thrown at my feet.
For a heartbeat, I saw Austin on his knees. Olivia sobbing, their wrists in silver cuffs.
It would be so easy.
"I know you can, but I need to gather evidence first."
"Why the hell waste time?" he snapped, even though there was a hint of a chuckle under it. "I can put their asses in a cell or order death before our conversation ends!"
Of course he was angry. Daniel had been close to my father. He used to sit across from him at long treaty tables, listening like the respectful prince he once was.
My father had always been proud of him and often said Daniel would be a better king than the old one.
Daniel and I used to run side by side through the neutral forest, two young wolves racing the wind. He was big even then. Black fur with silver at the tips, eyes glowing gold.
But he was next in line for the throne, while I was the daughter of a regional Alpha.
I told myself he deserved a powerful Luna, not me. Not someone who would drag him away from his duty.
So I pushed the feeling down. He did too.
Now, years later, here we were. My mate a murderer. His lazy prince days long gone.
"I know you can move mountains," I said, dragging myself back to the present. "But if your people realize you are using your power without justice, you will lose their respect. And power without respect is nothing but noise. Real alphas are followed because their wolves choose to kneel, not because they are forced to."
He laughed.
"You know, I actually missed your wisdom. You really have a point there. But still, I cannot help but think you are also concerned about me."
My cheeks warmed.
"I am more concerned about our kingdom," I answered. I lifted my chin even though he could not see that either. "I am asking for a personal alliance with you, so of course I want your reign to be stable."
"If that is your excuse," he said.
I could hear the smirk in his voice.
"Still, the truth you just gave me makes me want to behead your bastard mate on the spot. Truth is, he's already dead in my mind now.
"I only want justice.
"Very well," he said slowly. The king's voice came back, steady and iron strong. "Then what part of this plan are you planning to use my role for, Luna?"
The way he said Luna made my wolf stand taller.
It sounded different from how Austin said it.
"In two weeks, Austin will celebrate his years of leading Wild Brookes as Alpha."
I could almost see Daniel leaning back in his chair, one arm over the side, eyes narrowed.
"And?"
"I will gather evidences, and expose their crimes. On that same day, I am asking your warriors to arrest Austin and Olivia."
That's it? Daniel snorted. "Sounds boring."
I shut my eyes and shook my head.
"I dont want you to just crush them from above," I started.
"I know," he cut in, softer this time. "I know what you want. And I agree. But since this is a treaty, I will lay out my terms as well."
"Say it," I answered. "Anything.
"When your bastard mate has been removed from your pack, you will be the mother of my future heir.
Heathers POV
"The mother of your heir?"
"Unless you plan to keep pushing out children for Austin instead," he said calmly. "From what I hear, he is doing a great job killing them."
"I will never give him another pup." My fingers tightened until my claws bit into my own palm.
I could almost feel Daniel nod. "Good. Then we understand each other."
"Are you really serious?" I whispered.
"I do not make empty offers. You want justice for your father. I want a Luna whose spine is not made of mud and a mother strong enough for my heir. This solves all of that in one move."
"But I am still mated," I said stiffly. "Marked even."
"Marks can be broken. Bonds can be cut."
Breaking a bond hurts. It tore both wolves. It could drive one or both mad.
But I thought of Austins hands on Olivias body. And the bitch's voice bragging about killing my father.
"This is not a small price," I murmured.
"Neither is what you are asking me to do," Daniel replied. "You want my warriors. My name. My power. You want me to walk into your pack lands and drag your Alpha in chains in front of his people."
His tone softened a fraction.
"And I want you," he added. "I am just honest about it."
My heart slammed so hard it hurt.
The bond with Austin was still there, but the pull toward Daniel that I had buried was still alive under it. It stretched now, reaching toward his voice like a plant toward light.
I swallowed.
"You are asking me to jump from one Alpha to another," I said.
"No." His answer was sharp. "I am asking you to jump from a coward who hides behind you to a king who will stand in front of you. That is different."
A low heat pooled in my stomach at his words. My wolf wagged her tail I my mind.
"You have two weeks. Gather your proof. Call me the moment you are ready."
My hand drifted to my lower belly where Austins pup was still trying to grow. How could I promise Daniel pups when I was already carrying another Alphas?
"Are you backing out?" he asked.
I gasped. "What if... what if I do not agree to your terms?"
He chuckled, dark and low. "Then expect my warriors to be at your gates and to extract your Alpha and his mistress before I take my dinner, which will happen in three minutes."
Fear and anger crashed together in my chest. "I told you I need to gather proof first," I shot back. "Or do you really want your kingdom to see you as a tyrant? A cold-blooded king?"
"I dont mind?" he said, and I believed him.
I bit my lip hard.
What was I supposed to do? I wanted justice for my father and for the pups inside me.
But I did not want Daniels name dragged through the mud because of my mess.
"Once and for all, my sweet Heather. Do you agree or not?"
My wolf pressed against my skin, torn and restless. "Fine!
I didnt know yet how I would fix all of this.
But what mattered right now was simple: Austin and Olivia would pay, and my pack would be free.
I composed myself after the mindlink.
Grabbing the old treaty, I walked out of the room.
As I expected, Austin was already at the table.
He had changed clothes, but Olivias scent still clung to him under the soap.
My wolf snarled, but I swallowed it back and moved closer.
Austin pushed his chair back and stood with a wide smile.
"Love, I did not know you were already here.
He stepped toward me and kissed my cheek.
My skin crawled under his lips. My wolf tried to jerk our head away.
As if you would notice my arrival. You were too busy with your mistress, I thought.
Out loud, I said nothing. Even my wolf was howling for his blood, and for his heart between her teeth.
He hurried to pull my chair out. "You must be tired from the trip to the Ironclaw Citadel.
I sat, my heart was beating so hard it hurt, but my face stayed neutral.
"So, how was the meeting with Alpha Daniel?" His eyes were bright, almost glowing.
Controlling my hand from trembling, I slid the folder across the table.
"See for yourself."
Austin snapped it open like a kid with a gift. I watched his face as his eyes ran over the fake victory. His grin stretched wider with every line.
He had no idea that paper was dead already.
"This is it, Heather. You did it!
He stood up so fast his chair scraped back.
He grabbed his phone and hit a speed dial.
"Beta Gus, spread the word. Tell the Elders that our pack is now in the party of the current monarch. Tell them that after my endless persuasion of His Majesty, I got his golden yes."
I picked up my fork, cutting through the meat on my plate so I did not stab him with it.
Endless persuasion?
While I went to Ironclaw, my sister was on his lap.
Austin paused and looked at me. "You dont mind, right, since you went to the castle for me?"
I looked at the hypocritical man in front of me and felt my nails bite into my palms.
"Of course," I said. Rage crashed through me, burning hot over the memory of my fathers body and my dead pups.
I chewed my food and tasted nothing.
He kept talking, planning, already picturing the elders praising him, other Alphas shaking his hand, calling him brother, ally, visionary.
He didn't even see the way my grip on the fork whitened.
Dinner felt like it took years and five seconds at the same time.
When we finished, Austin wiped his mouth, his eyes still bright.
"The Elders called for a small celebration," he said, getting up. His beta appeared by the door like he had been waiting the entire time. "They want to drink at our new place with the king."
I looked up at him.
"Arent you going to invite me?" I asked.
He paused and gave me a quick, nervous smile.
"I want to, but I know you are tired. Please rest. I will be right back before you know it."
I forced a gentle look.
"Alright. Just don't drink too much."
He laughed, leaned down to kiss my hair, then walked out with his beta.
The moment their footsteps faded, I stood then hurried straight to Austins study.
The room still smelled of what he did earlier, but I ignored it and walked past the couch straight to his desk.
I had watched him type his passwords a hundred times, so I knew the exact words to enter.
At first it was nothing, then I found a folder tucked inside a system drive.
The footage loaded slowly. My eyes burned from staring, but I kept going.
Hours passed. The digital clock on the screen ticked closer to the time of the attack.
Right when I was about to give up and try again tomorrow, I clicked on the camera feed labeled STUDY_ROOM_INT.
My heart dropped when I saw my father on the screen.
There was blood on his mouth, and his shirt was soaked red. He was on his knees with his hands tied in the middle of the room, and even with his head bowed.
Austin had his hand wrapped around my fathers collar, dragging him across the floor. Olivia followed, fake tears running down her face.
I slapped a hand over my mouth.
On the screen, Olivia sobbed.
Thank you, Austin. If you didn't come, this old beast would have already violated me.
Old beast? That was what he called to the man who gave her a home.
Austins face twisted.
No one hurts you. And I wanted to end this old man a long time ago so my step to the Alpha position would be faster.
My father tried to speak, but Austin yanked him again.
Olivia sniffed, wiping at her dry eyes.
But I will not be your Luna. Not now that you found your mate, and she happens to be his daughter.
My whole body was shaking as I watched Austin let my fathers body drop.
Then, like my father was nothing more than a broken log in his way, Austin stepped on his chest to walk over him.
He went straight to Olivia and pulled her into his arms.
Heather may be my mate and the future Luna of this pack, but you will be my woman.
He bent his head and kissed her in this same room.
A sob ripped out of me, rough and ugly.
My wolf roared, her eyes glowed through mine.
I wanted to shift, find Austin wherever he was celebrating, and tear him apart in front of the Elders.
Curse the both of you!
I squeezed my eyes shut and forced air into my lungs. If I broke now, all of this would be wasted.
'Evidence. Use it! my wolf snarled.'
My hands were still shaking, but I forced them to move.
I copied the file and sent them to my private address.
On the screen, the video kept running.
"I'm so sorry, Father," I sobbed quietly. "I should have protected you. I miss you so much it hurts, and I want to kill them for turning every memory of you into a crime scene!"
My wolf pressed her nose against the inside of my ribs, mourning with me.
I had two weeks to gather proof and stop myself from tearing their throats out in the hallway.
I was done being the Luna who endured.
Heathers POV
I continued to gather evidence like a she-wolf collecting bones from a battlefield.
I also installed another camera.
Hidden in Austins study, I watched him and Olivia come in at night and sleep together.
Then there was a knock on my office door.
Come in, I said calmly.
Olivia entered with a tray.
Hello, Luna. I brought you some tea. I know you are very busy. By the way, congratulations to you and Alpha on the new achievement.
I stared at her.
And instead of her face, I saw the video where her hand was gripping my fathers hair.
My fingers curled so hard my nails bit into my palms, but I stayed still, watching her set the cup down.
When she turned to leave, I said, "Olivia..."
Her shoulders stiffened and she turned slowly. "Anything else Luna?"
My father died a month ago now. Arent you missing him?
She blinked.
What what do you mean, Luna?
Is that question hard to answer?
Her mouth opened but no sound came out.
Although I didn't need her answers. Only her reaction.
I sighed shaking my head as I took a glimpse at the tea.
What kind of tea did you prepare for me today?
Her face lifted instantly, relief rushing in. She explained the herbs, the benefits.
In my head, my question meant, 'What combination of poison are you feeding me now?'
I smiled thinly.
Can you taste it for me?
She went pale.
But Luna, that would be disrespectful. To touch your drink
Coming from you? I cut in. Anyway, the word respect sounds misplaced.
She swallowed.
I ordered you. Drink it!
Her eyes glassed over. Tears welled up. "But I can't..."
I frowned, irritation crawling up my spine.
Do it, I snapped.
She gasped, trembling like I was abusing her. She lifted the steaming mug with trembling hand.
And then Austin himself came in.
Is there a problem here? he asked, his gaze flicking to me, then lingering on her.
Before I could speak, Olivia stumbled forward and accidentally spilled the hot liquid down her chest and belly.
Ouch! she screamed.
Austin rushed to her, hands everywhere. He forgot where he was.
His palm hovered over her belly. "Are you okay?" Then he suddenly turned to me. "Are you bullying your sister?"
I opened my mouth.
He was already in my face.
Apologize to her, he ordered. Not because youre the Luna you get to mock our staff. And Olivia is not just staff. Shes still your sister because your father was her guardian."
Alpha, please. I dont deserve an apology, Olivia whispered weakly. "It was my fault because I'm not feeling well and the mug slipped.'
Austin panicked. Youre not feeling well and you still served her?
He turned back to me, eyes cold.
Im warning you, Heather. Apologize. Or Ill send you to the cell.
The cell? For a moment, I honestly thought I had misheard him.
Yes, because you refuse to comply with my order. Not because youve done something for this pack makes you my equal. You are still under me.
I could feel my heart being twisted painfully. After what I did for this pack, and still I was under him?
Im not just the Luna, I said, my voice shaking now. Im your mate. And you would lock me in a cell because I refuse to apologize to my tea bringer? Did I even spill the tea?
It sounded insane, but I knew why he was overacting like this.
He was terrified of the pup in her belly.
Are you questioning my power? Austin barked.
He turned and shouted, Warriors!
They came in fast.
Extract your Luna. Detain her in the cell.
You cant do this to me, Austin! I fought and kicked.
But my hand never left my belly.
I would not let them harm my pup. They had already taken too much from me.
Alpha, please no, Olivia sobbed. Not the cell.
My mind will not change, Austin said. I am aligned with the Alpha King now.
She dropped to her knees.
Please, she begged. Dont put her in the cell. Shes still my sister and I dont want to see her reduced like an omega."
Fine, Heather will be detained in the guest chambers. Locked. Until I say otherwise.
I said nothing as they dragged me away.
But just before the door closed, I saw Olivias lips curved.
"Your good days will end soon. Both of you, I whispered through clenched teeth.
Heathers POV
Three days had passed since Austin ordered me locked away, and by the time they finally opened the door, weakness clung to my limbs like chains.
Still, I walked.
By the time I reached our bedroom, I froze at the strong smell of sex, clinging to the air.
My stomach twisted violently, and for a moment, I thought I might collapse right there at the entrance.
My wolf stirred, low and dangerous.
They had been here in my bed while I was kept away like a criminal.
I reached for the blankets and pulled them off the bed without hesitation.
Gathering everything in my arms, I turned and walked out of the room and headed straight for the fireplace.
When I returned to the room, Austin was already there.
He stood near the bed, his brows drawn together as he looked around, clearly searching for something.
His eyes landed on me.
Where are the blankets? he asked.
I looked at him.
He noticed the missing blanket, but not me.
Not the way my body felt hollow after three days in confinement.
He didn't even ask if I was alright.
I sent them to the fireplace," I whispered.
His expression shifted instantly.
What? he snapped. Why did you do that? Those blankets were very expensive. More expensive than your
He stopped.
Than my what? I asked.
He shook his head. Never mind.
He exhaled and waved it off.
Your detention should have been a week, he said casually. But I had you released now because we have an important council meeting tonight.
His eyes moved over me then, slowly, from head to toe, his gaze critical and displeased.
What happened to you? You dont look like the one I married anymore."
Something inside me almost laughed.
'What happened to me? My pups were gone because of your infidelity. You murdered my father so you could step into the Alpha position immediately. That's what happened to me.'
I held those words back even though my heart wanted to explode.
Austin turned away, already losing interest, as if I were no longer worth examining.
Anyway, wear something decent and presentable later.
---
The council hall was already filled when I arrived.
I stepped inside wearing a simple dress. Something I used to wear on ordinary days.
Austin turned his head.
His gaze dragged from my face down to my feet, then back up again.
His voice cut into my mind. I could feel the irritation in his tone.
'I told you to wear something good.'
I answered just as calmly. 'I feel comfortable in this dress.'
I reached my seat and sat beside him, not because I wanted to but because I needed to.
And then the doors opened again.
Olivia stepped in, wearing a red gown. So much extravagance for a she-wolf who was only in this manor to serve her Luna.
Good evening, she greeted.
The council responded immediately, voices rising, welcoming, approving.
And then Autin stood for her.
His expression softened in a way I had not seen in a long time, maybe ever.
He stepped toward her, his hand naturally finding the small of her back as he guided her forward.
Take your seat, he murmured to her.
She smiled up at him.
Thank you, Alpha, she said.
And she sat on the other side of him.
I watched the council nod and smile at them.
No one looked shocked or questioned anything.
Austin cleared his throat, drawing attention back to himself.
Today, we are formally celebrating our new success. He paused, and pride lifted his chin. We are now one of the allied packs of the present Alpha King. This means more protection, greater trade opportunities, stronger military backing, and elevated status among the territories.
Applause broke out.
Congratulations, Alpha Austin.
Well deserved.
A remarkable achievement.
Voices overlapped, each one feeding his ego, building him higher and higher.
Beside him, Olivia turned toward him, her eyes shining.
Im so proud of you, she said softly.
Her hand rested lightly over his arm.
Austin glanced at her, and there was the softness again, and that look that had never truly been mine.
Thank you, he replied.
She laughed gently at something he whispered back.
The council watched them as if they were a perfect couple.
And I was sitting right here, watching my place being erased in real time.
My father built this pack from nothing, and now I was nothing in it.
Arent you too close to my husband? I said out of nowhere.
The room became quiet.
Beside me, Austin went very still.
Then slowly, he turned his head to me and gave me a sharp look.
I held his gaze, not looking away.
Olivias gaze shifted to me, and she smiled sweetly.
Im just happy for the packs success, she said, her tone light, as if including me in something I no longer belonged to.
Then suddenly she swayed.
Olivia? Austin was already there.
His hand on her shoulder. His body angled toward her.
Concern flooded his face.
Are you alright?
She steadied herself, holding onto him lightly.
Then she smiled.
Im fine, Alpha. But I think it's time for them to know, she said, glancing around the table.
Her fingers slipped into her purse.
I was actually waiting for the right moment
She pulled out a small photo.
My dear council. I have even better news.
She lifted the photo just enough for them to see.
Im pregnant. Finally, Alpha Austin is going to be a father.
Heathers POV
I stared at the sonogram in Olivias trembling hands.
Then without another word, I pushed my chair back so abruptly it scraped harshly against the floor.
My heart pounded violently as I rushed out of the dining room and made my way to the room.
Heather, where are you going? Austin called, but I ignored him.
I opened the hidden compartment behind the wardrobe, and I dropped to my knees when I noticed that the lock was shattered.
The sonogram was gone.
I shot to my feet and returned to the dining hall, fury burning through my veins, hotter than anything I had ever felt before.
Austin was already standing when I entered.
Where did you go? he demanded. Why did you leave without notice?
I did not answer him.
My gaze moved past him and locked onto Olivia.
That sonogram report is mine!"
The council members exchanged stunned looks.
Austin frowned, disbelief flashing across his face. Thats impossible.
His eyes dropped briefly to my abdomen, then back to my face.
You can no longer bear children. The healer confirmed it.
My hands moved instinctively to my stomach, clutching it protectively.
But I do, and that photo is mine. Im pregnant, Austin.
The room erupted into whispers.
Austin turned sharply to Olivia. Where did you get that photo?
Olivias lips trembled. Tears welled in her eyes as she shook her head.
This is my report. I went to the healers clinic days ago. Dont you know? I have been pregnant even before this.
I looked at Austin, and he looked surprised himself, but also very pleased. "R-really?"
And here I was, needing to defend my own pup.
So since when did this affair start? I asked, my voice cutting through their silence.
I already knew the answer, but I wanted him to say it.
He did not, so I turned to the room instead.
Since when did you all know? Since when did you know your Alpha was cheating on his Luna with her own servant in exchange for pleasure?
Gasps filled the hall.
I pointed directly at Olivia.
Youre a slut who murdered my previous pups. You poisoned my concoctions. You made me believe my body was weak. And now you stand there, proud that youre carrying a child with him?
Olivias face flushed red. She swayed slightly.
Alpha I think I will faint
She sat down quickly and drank water while clutching the sonogram tighter.
Before I could take another step, Austin grabbed my arm.
Enough!"
He dragged me out of the hall, his grip bruising, his steps fast and merciless.
The door slammed shut behind us as he threw me onto the floor of a private room.
I gasped as pain shot through my body.
What is this, Heather? Austin demanded coldly. Have you not learned your lesson from your imprisonment? And now you choose to disgrace me in front of the council?
I stared at him in disbelief.
Now I was the disgrace?
A broken laugh escaped my lips.
And now you call your own mate a disgrace, because she defended her dignity?
I lifted my chin and glared at him.
Understand the situation, Austin. You were cheating on me while mated to me. Who is the disgrace in this pack? Tell me.
He did not answer immediately.
Instead, his gaze dropped slowly to my stomach.
Are you really pregnant?
My hand tightened over my belly.
I had never planned to reveal it, not after everything I had just learned days ago.
But now my child had already been dragged into this.
Yes, I said firmly. Im pregnant. The sonogram Olivia showed everyone is mine.
The door opened.
Olivia stepped in, her makeup slightly smudged.
Oh, Luna. I know youre angry at me. But what can I do? I just loved. And Alpha Austin is not hard to love. So please dont be mad at me. Im sorry.
Dont apologize to her, Austin said sharply. She just want attention.
He looked down at me.
Apologize to Olivia for the scandal you created.
I wiped my tears, my hands trembling as I slowly stood.
No, I said. Never, Austin.
I said apologize, or you will regret this, Heather.
Olivia clutched his arm. Dont escalate this, Austin. She was just detained. Her emotions are unstable. Its okay.
No, Austin said coldly. I already let her last wrongdoing pass. Not this one. It concerns the reputation of my future heir.
His words crashed into my chest and twisted there, like he had reached inside me and torn something open with his bare hands.
Future heir.
He grabbed my arm again.
Apologize!"
No, I cried. Even if you kill me, I wont. I did nothing wrong!"
Austins eyes flashed amber.
Lets see how far your pride goes for a simple apology.
He dragged me out of the packhouse.
I struggled, cried, begged, but he did not stop.
Until we reached the healers cottage.
Fear crawled up my spine.
The next thing I knew, I was tied to a bed.
Ropes secured my wrists and ankles.
Healers surrounded me, their faces tense, waiting.
My breathing became uneven.
What are you doing? I cried. Austin, please, let me go!"
He stood at the foot of the bed.
You said you would not apologize even if I killed you, then I will have that pup inside you terminated.
Horror flooded my eyes.
No. No, please, I begged, shaking violently. Austin, this is your pup. Dont kill your own child!
Youll be blamed when it dies because of your stupid pride, Austin said.
Then he lifted his gaze to the healers and said coldly, Begin the operation. No anesthesia.
The healers complied at once and tightened their grip on the tools in their hands.
I noticed the way their faces became pale and horrified.
But still obedient to their Alpha.
Then Olivia stepped into the room.
She looked shocked as her eyes moved from me to the blood on the bed, then to Austin.
What are you all waiting for? Austin snapped.
I apologize! I cried immediately.
Say it clearly. Say it to Olivia.
I choked on my tears.
Im sorry, I forced out. I apologize, Olivia.
The healers looked at Austin, waiting for his command.
But then I saw Olivias face tighten when Austin softened at my apology.
She quickly spoke, I heard a rumor that Luna Heather was getting close to one of the warriors. The one assigned to watch her during her detention.
Austins expression darkened instantly.
He turned slowly to me.
So you are cheating on me? Is that pup fathered by another man?
I shook my head violently.
No, I cried. Austin, this is your pup!
His jaw tightened.
Terminate it!"
The order fell like a death sentence.
Nowait! I screamed, panic tearing through my chest as I thrashed against the ropes. Please, dont do this!
Hands grabbed me.
Then something sliced through my belly.
A scream ripped out of me.
My back arched, my fingers clawing uselessly at the restraints as tears streamed down my face.
Austin! I cried, my voice shaking, desperate. Please! Please stop them!
I looked at him through blurred vision.
His eyes were glowing amber, while Olivia stood beside him, one hand resting lightly on his arm.
And she was smiling.
My eyes burned as my wolf tried to surface.
For a moment, my sight sharpened. I knew my eyes had flashed, but I was too weak.
The wolfsbane in my system crushed my wolf down before she could rise.
Another wave of pain slammed into me, this time more intense.
I screamed again.
And then everything went dark.
Heathers POV
I woke up, the first thing I felt was pain.
For a moment, I was disoriented. My mind felt slow, like it refused to remember.
Then it all came back.
My hand moved slowly to my bandaged stomach, and my breath stopped.
For the nth time I lost my baby.
A broken sound tore out of my chest before I could stop it.
Ah
My cry turned into a scream, as the truth sank into my bones.
Was I meant to never have a child and only carry life just to lose it every time?
Then I heard footsteps, and I froze.
I turned to the wall, biting back my cries as I forced my body still. The movement sent pain shooting through my abdomen, and I almost cried out again, but I clenched my teeth and endured it.
Voices followed.
Why dont you just reject her, Austin? The council is already in favor of me. Of us.
My jaw tightened.
So this was Olivia's goal all along.
Because of her ambition to become Luna, she poisoned me, killed my pups, and even had a hand in my fathers death.
And now, she wanted me gone for good.
You dont understand, Austin said. I still need Heather. If the Alpha King learns I severed our bond and banished her, do you think he wont cut ties with my pack. Shes still useful even if shes tied to that bed forever.
There was a pause, then he continued.
Wait, are you certain the pup she lost was that warriors? Austin asked, his voice tight.
Yes, Olivia replied without hesitation. Im certain.
Austin let out a breath.
I still cant believe Heather would cheat on me. Too bad the pup was a boy. But if its not mine, then I shouldnt feel guilty at all.
A boy.
My heart clenched so painfully I thought it would stop.
For a moment, I imagined him.
Would he have had Austins eyes, or mine?
Would he have called me mother?
I bit my lip hard, forcing myself not to make a sound as tears slipped silently down my face.
Dont feel guilty, Olivia said softly. You were never meant to have a child with her. But me I am destined to carry your pups. I can give you as many as you want. They will each lead their own packs one day.
Im glad I have you, Austin replied. Youre right. Youre the one meant to continue my bloodline.
Then I heard a soft breath turn into a moan.
My entire body went rigid.
I didnt need to see them to know what they were doing.
Right here, where they took my child, I swore I would take everything from them.
They would beg for mercy and I would not give it.
---
A week passed.
Austin never returned to the healers clinic.
But I healed.
Before going back to the manor, I stopped by the healers clinic.
Do you still have the placenta from my pup? I asked.
The healer hesitated before nodding. Yes, Luna.
Perform a paternal test, I said. I placed a strand of Austins hair on the table. I had taken it from the room.
The healer looked at me carefully. For humans, it takes two weeks, but for werewolves, it only takes a few hours, so I can give you the result as soon as its done.
Thats fine. Send it to my email.
Luna, Im sorry for your loss.
I don't need your sorry. This is all you can do for me, I replied.
When I returned to the manor, I found them kissing on the couch.
They pulled apart.
Austin looked slightly uncomfortable.
Olivia smiled.
Hello, Luna. How are you feeling? Sorry we didnt visit you. Weve been busy.
You can rest, Austin said. But stay in the guest room. Your things are already moved.
I hope you dont mind, Olivia added sweetly. I moved into the master bedroom. Its more convenient for us unless you want to watch.
I said nothing and went upstairs.
In my room, I opened my laptop.
I gathered everything: documents, messages, videos, and photos.
Every piece of truth.
Then an email came with the result, and when I opened it, it showed a 100 percent match.
My jaw tightened.
Austin killed his own child, and I hope the Moon Goddess would curse him for it.
The next morning, I went downstairs.
They were having breakfast.
Austin was kissing Olivias belly, and I had to stop myself from throwing the nearest plate at them.
Before I could speak, he looked at me coldly and said, What do you want now? Still blaming me for the pup's death?
I forced a smile and said, No. Im here to ask your permission to organize Olivias baby shower along with the Wildbrookes celebration tomorrow night.
They both looked at me, surprised.
What is this, Heather? Austin asked.
Im done fighting, I said. I accept that I can no longer bear children. But this pup will be the future of this pack. As Luna, I will prepare everything for the future Alpha.
Olivias eyes lit up.
She stood and hugged me tightly.
Thank you, dear sister. I knew you would accept this. Youre such a good Luna.
Olivias hug made my skin crawl, but I forced myself to stay still and gave her a fake smile. "Don't mention it."
Then I looked at Austin.
Do you approve this?
He studied me for a moment.
Then he nodded.
"Yay!" Olivia screamed in excitement.
After lunch, I knocked on Austins office door, clutching the papers tightly in my hand.
Enter, he said.
I stepped inside and immediately saw them.
Austin sat behind his desk, working on his laptop, while Olivia clung to him, her arms wrapped around him
They looked proud, like everything was exactly how they wanted it.
I just need you to sign these, I said, walking forward and placing the papers on his desk. Its for the budget of the party tomorrow.
He didnt look at the papers right away. Instead, his eyes lifted to me, slow and steady, before he finally signed them.
I know this is hard for you, but youll accept our situation sooner or later. This is the best for all of us.
I met his gaze. You dont have to explain. I understand now. I just want everything to be in the right place.
And I meant it.
When he finished signing, I gathered the papers, ready to leave.
Wait, Heather.
I paused and turned back. Olivia was still holding onto him, her body pressed close as she smiled sweetly at me.
Since youre organizing my pups baby bash, I wanted to ask for your opinion on names. What can you suggest?
Austin didnt speak, but he was watching me closely.
I smiled.
If its a boy, you can name him after our late father. Henry.
I paused, then added, If its a girl Grace. It suits her better.
The name sounded almost cruel in my head, because there was nothing graceful about how that pup was made.
I saw their faces didnt soften. If anything, they looked displeased.
Thank you, Olivia said, but her tone wasnt as warm as before.
I gave a small nod. Ill excuse myself.
And without waiting for anything else, I turned and walked out.
---
That night, I checked the papers Austin had signed so blindly.
One was the severing of ties effectivity, which carried the same weight as verbally rejecting each other.
The other was the land title of Pack Wildbrookes, which meant he had no idea we were no longer mates and he was already a squatter on my land.
After scanning the documents and saving copies to my USB, I mindlinked Daniel.
'Hey...'
'Heather...'
When I heard his deep voice, I closed my eyes briefly to hide the tears.
If only he knew the hell I had gone through in such a short time.
'Im ready. Can you send someone to fetch me tomorrow night?'
'Of course,' he said softly. 'Be ready.'
The next day arrived.
The courtyard was prepared.
The screen was ready.
Everything was in place.
I stepped out of the gates with my suitcase, and as I passed their room, I heard them moaning.
I did not stop.
When the car arrived, I froze.
Daniel stepped out.
You?
He smiled.
I wanted to make sure youd arrive safely, so I came myself.
I got into the car, suddenly more aware of him, and didnt look back at the packhouse.
In a few minutes, the truth would explode.
And I was no longer there to watch it.
