My sister was having a secret affair with the Alpha Heir.

To hide it, she dragged me along every time.

But once, word got out.

The Luna's guards rushed in and caught only me.

The Luna issued a decree for our mating ceremony.

If you two are so in love, why hide it?

From then on, I was bound to the Alpha's Den.

Silas, the heir, blamed me for everything and treated me like trash.

Even in our private moments, he would pin my wrists down, darkly demanding I call him "Brother-in-law."

I woke up back on the day my sister invited me to the spring meadow.

I buried my face in the duvet and mumbled.

"I'm not going."

01

Seraphina, my older sister, froze when she heard me.

"Why aren't you going?"

"I..." She bit her lip, her voice trembling with hesitation. "I already told him we'd be there."

The person she was talking about was Silas Thorne.

The future Alpha of our pack, he was known for being composed, noble, and completely indifferent to women.

No one would have guessed the truth.

He had been meeting the daughter of the Blackwood family in secret for years.

I was the one who provided their cover. While Silas talked to my sister, I ate snacks nearby. While he played the lute for her, I flew kites outside the garden walls.

Whenever our mother asked where we had been.

Seraphina would gently pinch my palm and act as if everything was normal.

"Elara is just restless and finds the house boring. I'm taking her out to clear her head."

She knew our mother's concerns and cherished her own reputation above all else.

That's why, one day during a hike in the northern hills.

A sudden storm broke out.

When the Luna's guards came to pick up Silas, Seraphina didn't dare stay a second longer. She ran away without looking back.

She left me behind.

I tried to chase after her, lost and confused.

But the stone steps were slick from the rain. I slipped and nearly plummeted down the ridge.

A hand reached out and caught me. It was Silas.

"Careful."

An umbrella was moved over my head.

Beneath it stood an old pack elder, smiling.

"We found her."

"So, the girl the Alpha Heir has been meeting every day is actually the second Blackwood daughter."

Silas's expression turned cold. He immediately let go of my hand.

It was a cruel twist of fate.

The man who was supposed to be my brother-in-law became my husband because of that mistake.

For years afterward.

Silas, having lost his true love, became brooding and cruel. In the bedroom, he would always force me.

Overcome with shame, I would cry out and call him "Brother-in-law."

Only then would he kindly brush the damp hair from my forehead. He would bury his face in my neck, his voice satisfied and mockingly affectionate.

"Yes."

"My little sister-in-law."

The world thought the Alpha Heir was deeply in love with his mate.

No one knew how much I suffered in private.

Every time I remembered it, my heart trembled. The shame was enough to make me want to disappear.

I pulled the covers over my face.

"I'm sick."

"I'm just not going."

02

Seraphina reached out to feel my forehead.

My face was burning hot, which wasn't a lie.

"Fine."

"I'll stay and look after you. I'll call the pack doctor."

I was still feeling restless.

"Aren't you going to see him then?"

She sighed softly.

"If you aren't going, how can I possibly meet him alone?"

It was true. Seraphina had several sisters, but I was the only one she was close to. I listened to her and never talked back. I was the perfect shield.

She valued her reputation so much. She would never risk meeting Silas without a chaperone.

I turned over and closed my eyes. I was certain of one thing. From now on, I would never follow her to those secret meetings again.

I stayed sick for several days.

During that time, the spring rains fell constantly. Seraphina had no excuse to go out. She sat on the porch playing her lute, the music sounding lonely and haunting.

Our mother had her suspicions.

She thought Seraphina was sick too, perhaps with lovesickness.

"Do you know who your sister's crush is?"

Mother held a silver incense spoon, stirring the embers in the burner. She watched me through the rising smoke.

Nothing ever truly escaped her eyes.

But I still told a lie.

"I don't know."

Mother smiled faintly.

"I heard the Alpha Heir has a sweetheart. He meets her in secret and hides her well. The Luna has sent people to follow him many times, but they always come back empty-handed."

"Why hide it?" She sighed. "If her family is high-ranking enough and she has his favor, the match is a sure thing. I'm getting old. I don't understand girls these days."

I bit my lip.

Because I didn't understand it either.

Seraphina was reserved and well-bred. Her relationship with Silas seemed more like a deep intellectual bond. They talked about pack politics and philosophy. Occasionally, they talked about me, how I was wild and hated studying, which made Silas chuckle. She never mentioned marriage.

But on the day I married Silas.

She cried bitterly. She told him with pure hatred.

"How could you marry her?"

"Elara is my most precious sister. You better not fail her, Silas."

Silas couldn't bear to look at her. His gaze fell on me through the wedding veil.

He gave a low, hollow "I won't."

She must have been devastated back then.

Mother continued.

"The Alpha Heir is of age. The Luna has decided to just give him what he wants. She's hosting a ball in a few days to find this mystery girl and announce the engagement."

In my past life, the Luna had already caught me by this point, so this ball never happened.

But she didn't know she had the wrong person.

Because of that mistake.

Seraphina never married. Silas treated me like a toy to be broken.

Mother looked at my pale face.

"I thought it would be good for you both to go and see the world. But since your sister clearly has someone else on her mind, I'll decline for her."

She stood up to leave.

I chased after her, speaking hurriedly.

"Don't decline for her."

She turned around with a look that said, "I knew it."

I took a deep breath and added.

"Decline for me."

She blinked.

"You?"

She probably didn't understand.

They were in love. They had been together for ages.

What reason did I have to hide anymore?

I didn't care. In this life, I would never marry Silas Thorne again.

03

It wasn't until the invitation arrived that I realized something.

Mother's words were just a trap to figure out Seraphina's feelings.

The Luna wanted to know who the girl was.

There was no option to decline.

By the side of the Moon Lake, the grass was lush and the water reflected the clear sky.

This was the first time I saw Silas in this life.

He wore a casual white linen shirt. His dark hair was pulled back, his features sharp and handsome, his expression cold and composed.

No one would guess.

After losing his heart's desire, he would become a total psychopath.

Seraphina gripped my hand, her palm sweaty from nerves.

"Everyone says the Luna knows about Silas's secret."

"Will she think I'm improper?"

"No," I shook my head. "The Luna is kind. She won't look down on you for this."

She let out a long breath, but she didn't look relaxed.

There was someone else standing next to Silas.

A man in a green jacket leaning against the railing. He was strikingly handsome, but he looked bored, as if he didn't care about anything happening.

When he saw me, he stood up straight and smoothed out his sleeves.

Seraphina didn't recognize him.

"Who is that?"

Silas's voice was flat.

"My cousin, Jaxen Sterling. The heir to the Sterling Pack."

"You care so much about your reputation. I thought it would be better if more people were present when we met."

"Just in case something happened..."

Seraphina smiled.

"You're so cautious, Silas."

"Elara has been by my side this whole time, and we've never had a single slip-up."

A heavy gaze landed on the top of my head.

"Never had a slip-up?" Silas let out a short, mocking laugh. "You're too innocent. You don't realize some people have been planning for a very long time."

The blood drained from my face.

He had been reborn too.

In our past life, Silas had humiliated me many times. He never believed that my fall on the stairs was an accident.

"Aren't you just that kind of girl?" His fingers would graze my ear and my cheek, stopping at the corner of my eye. "Back then, you used to look at me with those wet eyes right in front of your sister, trying to tempt me..."

"And now, you can't even stand the sound of me calling you sister-in-law? Pathetic."

I would cry, and he would just cover my eyes, his voice thick.

"It's too late."

Those unbearable memories echoed in my ears like ripples on the lake. They made my head spin until I could barely breathe.

Seraphina looked confused.

"What do you mean, Silas?"

I pulled my hand out of hers and lowered my eyes, speaking quickly.

"The Luna is about to announce the mating. You don't need to worry anymore, Seraphina. I'm going to go elsewhere."

She frowned.

"WaitD"

I grabbed my skirt and hurried down the steps before she could catch me.

04

I couldn't enjoy the beautiful flowers or the scenery anymore.

I hid in a quiet corner, barely responding when people spoke to me.

The Luna was sitting in a pavilion, listening to an old maid.

"The girl the Heir likes is definitely here."

"But I can't tell which one she is."

"You can't tell?" The Luna chuckled, the gold pins in her hair rattling. "He usually avoids women. Just see who he looks at the most and who he stays near. Then you'll know."

The maid thought for a moment.

"He spent the most time with the eldest Blackwood daughter. They fed the koi fish together."

"But he spent the most time looking at someone else."

The Luna leaned forward.

"Oh?"

"Point her out to me."

I looked up blankly and locked eyes with the Luna.

Just like in my past life.

A flash of surprise and admiration crossed her eyes.

"Come here."

"I have something to ask you."

I sat in the pavilion, my hands on my knees, looking down politely.

She asked about my family first.

"I am the second daughter of Lord Blackwood, Elara."

"I see," the Luna said, nodding to the maid to pour me tea. "Have you met my son?"

My breath hitched slightly.

"We have met a few times. We aren't close."

While we were talking, the bushes by the path rustled. Silas's long fingers brushed aside a branch, revealing a pair of ice-cold eyes.

His gaze swept over my face.

"It's not her," he said coldly. "Mother, stop asking. The girl I love is refined, reserved, and modest. She isn't a calculating social climber like this one. In a month, I will bring her to see you and ask for your blessing."

His words were incredibly harsh.

I felt dozens of eyes turn toward me. It was humiliating. I squeezed my fingers until they turned white.

The Luna frowned.

"You've only met her a few times. How can you judge Elara's character so harshly?"

Silas went silent for a moment.

He couldn't talk about the past life we shared.

The Luna tapped her fingers on the table.

"What is wrong with you today? Why are you attacking this poor girl?"

"I think she looks lovely and kind. Don't ever say those things again."

Silas twitched his lips and adjusted the silver bracelet on his wrist. It rubbed against the inner part of his arm.

"Fine."

That was a habit he had when he was frustrated.

Once.

He had pushed me too far, and I bit him.

The bite mark was on the inside of his wrist.

He used to wear that bracelet to hide it in meetings. It had become a permanent habit over the years.

05

On the way home, the carriage swayed gently.

I leaned against the window, feeling like a ghost. My head bumped against the frame several times.

Seraphina reached out and placed a soft handkerchief against the wood to cushion me.

"I heard Silas said some mean things to you."

She spoke softly.

"Don't take it to heart. I'll talk to him."

"He used to be so gentle. I don't know what's happened to him lately. He seems to have a grudge against you."

The past felt so far away it was blurry. In my previous life, I was bold and lively. I actually did call him "Brother-in-law" in private back then. Silas used to spoil me. He brought me treats from the palace and settled my problems behind the scenes.

When I thanked him.

He would smile.

"You're her sister. Of course I'll take care of you."

Who would have thought? If he married the wrong person, he would turn into a monster.

I turned my head and looked at Seraphina for a long time before finally speaking.

"Will the Alpha Heir..."

"Will he really become my brother-in-law?"

The wind blew through the carriage curtain. she brushed back a stray hair and looked down, smiling shyly.

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

"You'll be happy, won't you, Seraphina?"

"I..." She hesitated again, her voice trailing off. "I've waited so long because I was scared. Scared of the rivalries in the Alpha's house. I didn't know if I could handle it. But I love him. Being with him should be a happy thing."

She always had so many worries.

Silas didn't have other women in the end. He had no mistresses. If he was that obsessed with me, how could he ever look at someone else if he had the one he wanted?

But I couldn't comfort her.

I couldn't talk about the past life, and I couldn't predict the future.

Seraphina smoothed out the frown on my face.

"There now."

"Why are you always so gloomy lately? You haven't told me your secrets in a long time."

"Is there someone you like?"

I said.

"Maybe."

That made her laugh.

She covered her mouth with her sleeve and giggled for a bit.

"What kind of answer is that?"

Just moments ago.

After Silas left.

The Luna had comforted me for a long time.

She liked me in both lives.

Finally, she said.

"My son is clearly an idiot. I wonder if my nephew has better taste?"

She pointed toward the young man standing in the distance.

He looked like a hero from a legend, standing apart from the world.

It was Jaxen Sterling.
