The phone buzzed on the desk. I glanced at the screenan unknown numberbut swiped to answer without hesitation.

Shawn Lincoln, I'm coming back next month. Let's get married.

The sender didn't sign off, but that arrogance in her toneI knew it too wellit was Vanessa Fey.

Two years since our breakup. I thought we were completely out of each other's lives, but she suddenly surfaces, saying this kind of thing.

I replied quickly, "Vanessa, stop joking. I'm already married."

No more than seconds after I sent the message, her call came through immediately.

I hesitated for a moment but answered anyway. Her arrogant voice came through the receiver: "Married? Shawn, then just divorce her and marry me."

I frowned. "Vanessa, I'm satisfied with my life now. Don't bother me."

She laughed. "I just want to take back what's mine. By the way, your wife is Hazel Williams, right? I checkedfrom ordinary family, pretty easy to control."

Her words put me instantly on edge. "What do you want? Vanessa, I'm warning youstay away from her."

"What I will do depends entirely on you." Her voice was light but carried an undeniable threat: "Think carefullymarry me, or watch something happen to your sweet wife."

After saying that, she hung up immediately, leaving me clutching the phone, my heart pounding wildly.

The next afternoon, I was in a meeting at work when my phone suddenly buzzed with a message from Hazelthere was a woman at home claiming to be my girlfriend.

My mind went numb, and I immediately called in sick, grabbed my coat, and rushed home.

I pushed open the door and saw Vanessa sitting on the living room sofa, dressed in a red dress, perfectly made up, while Hazel stood beside her, pale as a ghost.

"Shawn, you're back." Vanessa looked at me and smiled as she stood up, as if she were the true hostess of this house.

I ignored her and hurried over to Hazel's side, gripping her hand. "Hazel, don't be afraid. I'm here."

Hazel looked up at me, her eyes full of hurt, but she still gave a small, hesitant nod.

Vanessa watched us, her smile fading. "Shawn, I'm still here. Can't you see that?"

"Vanessa, that's enough!" I glared at her. "This is my home. You need to leavenow!"

Vanessa sneered, then turned to look at Hazel. "Miss Williams, right? I was Shawn's first. You? You're just the thing he settled for. His second choice."

Hazel trembled slightly. I stepped in front of her protectively. "Vanessa, don't spout nonsense! Hazel is my true love. We are happy now."

Vanessa pulled a check from her bag, placed it on the coffee table, and slid it toward Hazel. "Miss Williams, here's two million. Take it and divorce Shawn. I know your family's struggling. This should be more than enough to take care of you and your family."

Hazel's face went even paler, but she shook her head firmly, "I don't want your money, and I'm not divorcing Shawn."

I grabbed the check from the coffee table, balled it up, and tossed it in front of Vanessa. "Vanessa, take your dirty money and get outor I'm calling the cops!"

Vanessa stared at me with anger. A flicker of defiance flashed in her eyes, but she still turned around and left.

After she left, I held Hazel close, whispering, "Hazel, I'm sorry you had to go through this. Vanessa and I ended things a long time ago. I won't let her disrupt our lives anymore."

Hazel leaned against me and quietly replied.

Who would've guessed Vanessa would show up again the very next day.

This time, I didn't go to work. I stayed home with Hazel since she just had the baby and was still resting.

When I heard the knock, I thought it was a delivery. But when I opened the door, Vanessa was standing there holding an envelope.

"Shawn, we need to talk." Vanessa looked at me with a hard edge in her voice.

"There's nothing to talk about. You'd better leave now." I tried to close the door, but she reached out and blocked it.

"I'm here today to give Hazel one last chance." Vanessa pushed me aside and walked into the living room. Hearing the noise, Hazel came out from the bedroom.

Vanessa pulled a check out of the envelopestill two millionand placed it in front of Hazel. "Miss Williams, take this two million. Get a divorce from Shawn tomorrow. Otherwise, you'll lose everything."

"I won't get a divorce." Hazel's voice was quiet but absolutely firm.

Vanessa looked at Hazel, eyes dripping with contempt. "If you keep being ungrateful, I can't promise nothing won't happen to your family."

Her words cut deep, like a knife to my heart. I grabbed her wrist hard. "Vanessa, if you lay a finger on my family, I swear to God I'll ruin you."

Vanessa jerked her hand free. "Shawn, don't force me. I'll say it one more time: either you marry me, or Hazel and her whole family will suffer."

"You're completely insane!" I tore up the check on the coffee table and threw the pieces in Vanessa's face. "Even if I go broke, I'd never take your dirty money like this! Get out, and never show your face in front of Hazel and me again!"

Vanessa stared at the torn check on the floor, her face pale. "Shawn, you're going to regret this!"

With that, she turned and stormed off in anger.

Hazel came over and took my hand. "Shawn, don't be angry. I believe we can get through this."

From that day on, I was on edge every single moment. I kept Hazel at home, told her not to go outside, and even hired a nanny to care for her and the kids.

I thought this would make things safer, but I never imagined tragedy would still strike.

That day, I was in a meeting at the company when I suddenly got a call from a neighbor. Their voice was urgent: "Shawn, come home right now! Something's happened at your place!"

My heart tightened, and I immediately asked, "What's wrong? What happened?"

"Your wife jumped off the floor with the child! You need to come back right now!"

The neighbor's words struck me like a thunderclap, making me dizzy. The documents in my hands dropped to the floor, and I didn't even bother to pick them up. I ran home like a maniac.

Along the way, my mind went completely blank, with only the neighbor's words echoing in my ears.

How could this be? Hazel loved our child so much and cherished our family. How could she do such a thing?

It has to be Vanessa. It's definitely Vanessa who pushed her to this!

When I got home, there was already a crowd gathered downstairs, and the police had arrived.

I pushed through the crowd and saw Hazel and the child lying on the ground, covered with a white sheet.

My heart felt like it was being ripped apart. I ran over, trying to lift the sheet, but the police held me back.

"Sir, please calm down." A police officer pressed on my shoulders.

"Calm down? That's my wife and child! How can I calm down?" I shouted, tears streaming uncontrollably down my face.

Later, the police told me their preliminary conclusion was that Hazel, suffering from postpartum depression, jumped off the building holding the baby.

But I stayed with Hazel the entire time after she gave birth; she was always happy. How could she suddenly become so depressed that she'd jump off a building?
