After two thousand years of being bound to the Supreme Alpha of War, he finally agreed to ask the High King for permission to make me his Luna.
I thought he had finally let go of his dead First Love. I was filled with joy, ready to tell him that I was carrying his heir.
But then, I saw him in his private chambers. He was holding a woman who looked seventy percent like his lost mate.
He was whispering her name, "Rosalie," with such obsession.
I stood outside the hall, finally realizing he never forgot her. He had even found a surrogate who looked just like her.
After a sharp pang in my heart, I told my brother through a spirit link, "I want to go back and guard the Bridge of Souls."
1.
In the heart of the Underworld, my brother let out a long sigh.
"Guarding the Bridge of Souls is the duty of every Shadow Goddess. It is time for you to come home," he said finally.
"However, the guardian must be free of earthly desires. What about your fianc and that child in your womb?"
I bowed deeply toward my brother.
"Do not worry, brother. I will not be marrying Silas."
I placed my hand over my lower abdomen, suppressing the bitterness in my soul. "As for the child, please give me ten days."
Ten days from now was supposed to be my wedding day with Silas.
I wanted to end it then. It felt right to finish where it all began.
When my spirit returned to the Celestial Realm, the two figures in the bedchamber were still entangled.
I pretended not to see them and turned back to my own quarters.
My hall was bustling with energy. The handmaidens were preparing for the wedding in ten days.
When they saw me, they rushed over to gossip.
"Lyra, do you think red lanterns look better in the front hall, or should we fill it with enchanted lilies?"
"I heard that in the human world, they light red candles for a full house of children. Should we prepare a pair for you and the Alpha?"
I had been brought to the Celestial Realm by Silas as a mere servant. No one here knew my true identity.
The handmaidens felt close to me because of that.
When I didn't speak, one of them grabbed my arm and laughed. "Lyra, if you don't pick, we're going to start a fight!"
I looked at their excited faces and forced a small smile.
Before I could speak, a cold, deep voice interrupted us. "Keep it simple. There is no need for such a spectacle!"
The handmaidens immediately scattered, bowing and scurrying away.
I gave Silas a formal curtsy.
Seeing my submissive posture, Silas assumed I was upset. He sighed and reached out to stroke my hair.
"The anniversary of Rosalie's passing is in a few days," he said softly. "The wedding shouldn't be too loud or grand."
Rosalie was his dead mate, the eternal scar on his heart.
In the past, hearing this would have made me throw a tantrum. I would have turned the palace upside down.
But now, I just looked at him calmly. "Whatever you wish, Alpha."
Silas frowned, noticing my strange behavior. He opened his mouth to say something.
Suddenly, a woman walked into the hall.
I recognized her instantly. She was the one from his bedchamber, the one who looked exactly like Rosalie.
She didn't bow. She walked straight to Silas with a charming smile.
"Alpha, the High King has summoned you."
Silas turned his gaze toward her.
A flash of tenderness appeared in his eyes. "Very well."
He walked away with her without a second thought.
Before leaving, he threw a cold line over his shoulder. "Go rest. We will discuss the wedding when I return."
I watched them leave, my heart feeling like lead.
Everyone in the Celestial Realm knew the High King had been in deep meditation for five hundred years. He wasn't seeing anyone.
They didn't even try to come up with a good lie to fool me.
I shook my head and swallowed the pain.
I didn't care anymore.
After all, I was going home in ten days.
2.
Two thousand years ago, I saved Silas while traveling through the human lands. We fell in love and married quickly.
But Silas was a famous young general back then. Even the princess of that kingdom wanted him.
She summoned me to the palace to humiliate me.
When her insults didn't work, she ordered her maids to slap me. I refused to take it.
I instinctively used my power. A flash of purple light sent the maid flying, killing her instantly.
Everyone at the banquet saw the purple glow in my palm. They were terrified and told the King I was a demon.
The King was furious. He ordered his guards to beat me to death in the main hall.
Just as the clubs were about to fall, Silas threw himself over me. He used his body to shield me.
I wanted to tell him I was a Shadow Goddess and couldn't be killed. But before I could, a guard's blade pierced Silas's heart.
After Silas died, I saw his soul float toward the Celestial Realm.
At the same time, a mysterious force pulled me upward with him.
Inside the War Palace, Silas was dressed in golden armor, radiating power. He looked down at me coldly.
"Since you died because of me, you shall stay by my side."
From then on, I became a maid in his palace.
It turned out Silas was a High Alpha of the Celestial Realm. He had only been in the human world to endure a trial.
He had been sent there to forget the Rose Goddess, Rosalie, who had died of poison.
I was naive enough to think Silas would eventually forget her and look at me.
Everything changed four months ago. He came to my room drunk and forced himself on me.
When he woke up, he said coldly, "I will take responsibility for this."
He even took me to the Bond Stone.
He used his blood to carve our names side by side.
At the time, I was blinded by happiness. I lived every day in the joy of our upcoming union.
Now, it just seems pathetic.
I touched my slightly swollen belly and picked up the bowl of herbal medicine. It was a draft meant to end a pregnancy.
Just as I was about to drink it, the door was kicked open.
Silas walked in, holding that woman's hand.
I immediately used my magic to turn invisible and stepped into the shadows.
The woman was wearing Rosalie's old jewelry. She leaned into Silas's chest, but Silas was frowning slightly.
"Rowena, why did you bring me here? I thought you wanted a gift."
"Silas," Rowena said with a pout. She pointed at the small Obsidian Bloom sitting on my nightstand. "I want that."
My heart skipped a beat. I almost spoke up.
But logic held me back.
Silas's frown deepened. "Those blooms are everywhere. What's so special about hers?"
Rowena gripped his arm and acted spoiled. "But I want that one!"
Silas hesitated, but when he looked at Rowena's face, his voice softened.
"If you want it, take it."
Rowena smiled and grabbed the plant. "What if Lyra gets angry?"
"It doesn't matter," Silas said, patting her head. "It's just a common plant."
I stood there, staring blankly as they walked away.
That wasn't a common plant.
Years ago, Silas was badly wounded in a war against the Demon King.
I had returned to the Underworld and spent a thousand years of my divine energy to grow that bloom to heal him.
Now, he had given it away to another woman.
Fine. I sighed. Let the dogs have it.
Suddenly, the child in my womb kicked me. I froze and realized I had spilled the medicine all over the floor.
The herbs needed to end a celestial pregnancy were very rare.
It looked like I would have to find the ingredients again.
Before I could find more herbs, the anniversary of Rosalie's death arrived.
The legend said she died saving the High King from a demon's curse.
Because of this, her memorial service was a massive event. Almost every deity and immortal was there.
I put on a simple white dress and followed Silas to the Rose Temple.
A crowd of immortals had already gathered outside. They were all in white. When Silas arrived, they moved aside to let him through.
Suddenly, a high-pitched voice came from behind us. "Silas! I'm late!"
Rowena was wearing a bright, peach-colored dress. She looked incredibly vibrant and was smiling broadly.
People were shocked by her outfit, but when they saw her face, they gasped.
She looked exactly like the late Rose Goddess.
Rowena ignored the stares and walked up to Silas, grabbing his arm. "Let's go, Silas. Let's go pay our respects to Rosalie."
Everyone held their breath, waiting for the Alpha's rage.
But Silas just looked at her and actually smiled. "Okay."
He let Rowena lead him into the main hall.
I was left standing outside alone.
As soon as Silas was gone, the whispers started.
"I thought the Alpha was marrying his maid? Where did this 'Little Rosalie' come from?"
"The messengers must have gotten it wrong. He's clearly marrying the lookalike. It makes sense. It heals his heart."
Listening to them, I remembered my first year in the Celestial Realm. I didn't know the rules.
I wore a pale green dress on Rosalie's anniversary.
Silas had beaten me until I was covered in blood. He made me kneel in front of this temple for four hours while everyone watched.
Now, watching the two of them inside, I felt exhausted.
I ignored the judgmental stares and walked away from the crowd.
That night, Silas actually came to my room.
He walked in with a frown. "Why didn't you come inside to offer flowers? I waited for you."
I didn't look up from my book. I was searching for the recipe for the medicine.
"Rowena was there," I said flatly. "I'm just a maid. I don't have the status to offer flowers to a Goddess."
Silas started to snap at me, but my calmness stopped him. He shook his head.
He opened his palm and used his magic to reveal a shimmering wedding gown.
"I had this made. I've infused it with five hundred years of my power. It will protect you. Do you like it?"
I looked at the glowing dress and put my book down.
The tears finally fell. "Are you marrying me, or are you marrying Rowena?"
Seeing me cry made Silas panic slightly. He softened his voice to comfort me.
"Lyra, I gave you my word. I will marry you."
"Rowena is just a new immortal. She's weak, and she looks so much like Rosalie. I can't just abandon her."
He cupped my face and wiped my tears. "Once we are wed, you will be my Luna. Whatever you want, just ask. I will give it to you."
What did I want?
I laughed inwardly. All I wanted was a way to rid myself of this child so I could go home.
I looked into his eyes. "I want to go to the Sacred Garden."
The Sacred Garden had the rarest herbs. I knew I could find what I needed there.
Silas paused. "Why do you want to go there?"
After Rosalie died, Silas had spent thousands of years of his power to create a Soul Lamp to keep her spirit alive. He built the Sacred Garden just to house that lamp.
I forced a hopeful smile.
"I want our wedding to be filled with rare flowers. I want to pick some seeds."
Silas sighed in relief. "I will take you there the day before the wedding."
Three days later, the final day of my deal with my brother arrived.
I stood outside the Sacred Garden, waiting for Silas.
Immortals passed by me all day. I waited from sunrise to sunset, but Silas never showed up.
As evening fell, a graceful figure approached.
It was Rowena.
She looked at me with pure mockery and spite. She let out a little giggle.
"Silas got a bit too drunk while we were looking at blossoms today. He asked me to come help you pick your seeds."
So, he was busy drinking with her.
I guess our wedding was never as important as his time with Rowena.
She waved her hand, and the heavy gates of the Sacred Garden opened with a flash of gold.
Only the High King and Silas were supposed to be able to open these gates.
The fact that Rowena could do it so easily meant Silas had personally taught her the spell.
Once inside, I began searching for my herbs. Rowena stood a few feet away, watching me.
"Are you carrying Silas's pup?" Rowena asked suddenly.
I froze. I put down the herbs and turned to face her. "What are you talking about, Rowena?"
She didn't look at me. She was staring at the glowing Soul Lamp on the pedestal.
"I don't want him looking at my face while thinking about another woman," she whispered.
In the next second, she slammed her palm into the Soul Lamp.
The lamp shattered into a thousand pieces. The tiny flicker of Rosalie's soul vanished instantly.
Before I could react, Rowena struck her own chest. She coughed up blood and collapsed to the floor.
Right then, Silas burst into the room. When he saw the bleeding Rowena, he rushed to her side in a panic.
"Silas I know Lyra is angry," Rowena sobbed, leaning into him. "I don't mind if she hits me."
"But but"
She pointed a shaking finger at me. "I don't understand why she broke the lamp. Even if she's jealous of Rosalie, she shouldn't have"
Silas went stiff.
He looked at the shattered remains of the lamp. His hands began to shake with rage.
I tried to explain, but before I could speak, he struck me.
He used all his strength. I was thrown across the room and slammed into the stone wall.
I coughed up dark blood. A sharp, stabbing pain exploded in my abdomen.
Silas wasn't done. He stormed over and grabbed my throat, his eyes full of murderous intent.
"Lyra! Do you want to die!"
I couldn't breathe. I tried to shake my head, gasping out, "It wasn't me it wasn't"
He looked like a demon. The veins on his forehead were bulging. His divine sword began to manifest in his hand.
Just as he was about to strike, Rowena pulled on his sleeve. "Silas my heart hurts."
Silas immediately dropped his sword, terrified of losing her.
He scooped Rowena up in his arms and walked toward the exit. He gave me one last, freezing look.
"You're lucky today. I will deal with you tomorrow."
He barked an order to the guards outside. "Throw this bitch into the dungeon!"
I was tossed into a cold, dark cell. The pain in my stomach was unbearable. I knew my child was leaving me.
I never imagined his own father would be the one to kill him.
As the blood pooled beneath me, I lay on the floor, waiting to go home.
At dawn, a purple light filled the cell. My true power flooded back into my body. The mark of the Shadow Goddess reappeared on my forehead.
"Now that the burden is gone, come home," my brother's voice echoed in my mind. "Stop embarrassing our family."
I wiped my tears and stood up. "I'm coming."
Before leaving, I made one stop at the Bond Stone.
I saw our names glowing there. It was disgusting.
The name of a Shadow Goddess did not belong on a Celestial stone.
I sliced my palm with a dagger and let my blood coat the blade. I carved through my name over and over until it was gone.
The bond was broken.
"Silas," I whispered. "We will never meet again in this life or the next."
